But somehow or) other the best scheme appears. to} be to get plenty of public work, | |such as highway construction and | 'new buildings under way asrapid- | |ly as possible so that there will be} numerous jobs handy for the boys | when they get back. This will speed up various lines of industry | and make work more plentiful in| general. When a ship has been running} at fullspeed in one direction, to} use a popular metaphor, such as the American ship was doing in| the troubled waters of war and | then has to be reversed to start 1 jn) another diréction, such as is “hec- | essary to get it headed toward the | ports of peace, there comes a time when the ship has to come toa dead stop. Then once it gets un-| der way again it begins to make more speed and things run more smoothly. The best fuel for the American ship at present is aj plentiful supply of jobs. There is much talk of putting! the soldiers on the Jand. That is an excellent idea. The more sol- diers who go to tilling the soil the the better it will be for thesoldiers and the country , at large. But many of the soldiers will not be keen. for. the farm. But as a whole they will probably want to go back to just about where they were before they went to war, if) i if from the farm back to the farm. | After being in the fighting’ for some time the comforts of the metropolis will probably appeal to them fora time. They will like’ to have the creature comforts| found in the big cities or the | small cities, with the movies and such like diversions, , In fact the’ returned soldier is likely to have some decided ideas along those lines. ! The safé scheme appears to be to provide all the jobs possible and to allow the youths who want to farm to get the land under the best possible conditions and to en- courage others to follow suit. But a goodly supply of worx near at hand will no doubt suit the re- turned soldier better than abou anything else. So thé public im provements should be put under way at once, with land ready for those who want farths, The local paper should be found in every home. No child should taught to appreciate the, home paper. - It is said to be the step. ping stone of intelligence in al those matters not to be found in books. Give your children a city which contains not a word abou a person, place, or thing, which they never heard of and how could you expect them to be in terested. But let them have the home paper and read about a per. son who they meet and of places which they are familiar and soon an interest is awakened which in- creases with every arrival of the local paper. Thus a habit of read. ing is formed add those children will read the papers all their lives and become intelligent men and women, a credit to their ancestors, |strong in a knowledge of ‘th world as it is today. =p Register FOR TRADE—Will ‘tende $500! player piano for work horses.
