How Dean ‘and Mayo Got the Better “of the Country, Folks. Henry C, Dean and George S. Mayo, who have been doing a flourishing business in this city for the past three or fouryears, were finally brought ‘w trial yesterday forenoon in the United States District Court upon aa indictment charging them with using the United States muils for fraudulent purposes.. Somuch has been published from time to time regarding the doings of these two ‘men under their various aliases of H. Kuox & Co., J. W. Winslow & Cos the + Monarch Lightaing Saw Company, and others @that almost. every readér~ ‘of the Chi- cago papers is thoroughly. familar with the ‘ways of both of theaccused. When the case was called yesterday Dean and Mayo were both on hand with S. K. Dow, their attoracy. Gen, ‘Leake and his assistant appeared for the prose- cution. The ‘opening specches were brief, and_ contined entirely ro an outline of the charges iit the indictment. ‘The. first witness called was Thomas Gleason,a “tarmer of Menard County, IIL, who, in last De- cumber, rezd the advertisement in the Johnson County: (Neb.) Journal of J. W. Winslow £ Co., No. 58 La Salle street, offering ‘“SIX-SHOT BULLDOZEL ” revolvers. for 60 cents. He “inclosed the amount in -a- registered letter, and after ,tho lapse of some time received a. mis- ‘erable’ cast-iron. “pop,” which “was thor- oughly useless for the purposes. intended, and which shortly fell tq. pieces in the’ bands. of his children, to whom ue gave it fora play~ Loy. Fragments of the forinidable * bulldozer” were exhibited {n-court, and caused considerable merriment. It is sucha weuponas is manu- tuctured and sold for tive or 10 cents, und fs use- sess. except as a toy for children, and for tiring ‘orf pa ol crimipately ‘at the beuds of both Judge and jury ‘without exciting the slightest alarm. Mr. Dow did not cure to cross-examine the witness. ‘The next wituess, Orlando Mathias, of Mineral . Point, 0: proved to be one of the Monarch vic- tims.” He read in the Chicago Wegkly News the advertisement of THE MONARCIL LIGHTNING SAW COMPANY," No. 163 Randolph street: Dean & Mayo’s office is in the Metropolitan Block, and this number, like No. 58 La Salle street, is simply the number of one of the entrances. He wrote to them and re- + ecived a number of circulars setting forth in the most extravagant terms the merits of the Mon- arch saw, Shortly thereafter be sent Sina registered letter, 2nd about. one month subse- . quently received the saw. Himself and 2 couple of friends, both good sawyers, set out to give tho saw 2 trial, and on the very first log the handle of it few off. They were oblized todofer opera- dons until the broken handle could be rep! faced ‘by another, and, this done, the purty again startcd for the woods, where, after giving it a thorouch ioe ‘they were foreed to the conclusion that the ‘machine was perfectly uscless. It was “abandoned in the woods, and wus likely’ still there. Upon being asked to describe the ma- chine far which be paid $20 and frelzht, the witness laughed outright, and was unable to make reply.” All that ho could say was that it ‘was a nondescript, of very inferior. material, and absolutely worthless for the purposes for which they are intended. “Could a boy of 16 yearsrun it,as alleged in - this circular?" “No, nor could three or four boys. It took too much wind und muscle.” Cross-examined by Mr. Dow, the witness swore that the saw hed not been in use one hour when it was a abangoued as worthless. There was no “run” to the machine, and it required much more exernon to make it go xt ull than it did to do the work with a Common cross-cut saw. Henry Riffer, a farmer of Evart, Mich., al: testified to having hud correspondence and’ dex ings with the Monarch Saw Company in Dec: er last. Like the previous witness, Mr. Rilfer’ took some stock in the circulars, . ‘AND SENT ON:$20 ,for one of the machines. Failing to receive any “machine, he came on to this city to pi cute the company. - Finally “the manetigeas duly received, apd, together with eral of ‘bis relatives, he's out to try it After Seen, half through a tog it would go no fur- and .bécoming. disgusted with “it witness nae re it to his brother. The latter cut throu;h a. Tog once and started to cut through it aguin, when the handle came off.. The machine was abandoned as useless." Un the cross, Mr. Dow attempted to show by ‘the witness that the machine had been shipped to tpe wrong address, and that this’ was the geason why it was not promptly received by the itness. The next witness, W.-C. Philtips, bt omployé ‘of tuo Recorder's office, was called to show from the records, Vol. 6, page 313, ‘THE ARTICLES OF INCORPORATYN: of Monarch Lightoing Saw Company. Gen. Leake said be proposed to show who were the {ncorpo- aig: of the compuny and who the stockhold- He read the entries on the record showing ‘that Henry C. Dean, George S. Mayo, snd Thomas MM. The shops ‘are provided with the latest designs in improved fron and wood-working machinery. The cars are laid on Georgin pine silts, and are made o! ash and whitewood, with a little vak and Sainut trimmings. One of the new ears, realy on track for carrying’ pussengers, costs about $1,000, while if the company bad to purchase them they would cost ubout: $1,500 apiece. The company has a machine for reviving dend car- wheels, the ordinary life of which is fourteen months. By the resyrrection process they aro madc new every fourteen months. .'The com- pany has about 1,000 bead of horses in its stables on Western avenue, ail divided, otf in “sections, und each section provided with anarrangement by which 300 horses in case of ‘necessity can be let loose inside of three minutes by tho man on watch. In. the barns for the Madison, street horses there is a machine invented by Superintendent Lake for cleaning horses run by water. There are now nineteen men employed for cleaning 300 horses a day, but by the afd of this machine five mencan perform the same work. The machine, is simple and. compact and really wonderful’ in its testa, there’ being two revolving brusbes worked bs; two men, one on ech side of a horse, The hoe. pital,“ biacksmith-shop, shoeing, and ~ other shops all show that great pains have been taken for thorough ventilation. During the past year the company has built new stables at Pare and Stanton avenues, Ozden avenue and Thirteenth street, Leavitt and Ferdinand streets, ‘Ilue Isl- and uvenue and Leavitt strect, 2 car-house at the corner of Warren and Western avenue, aud a three-story shop on West Washinzton west of Western avenue. The company’s car-shops ovcupy a space covering 300 by 125 feet, with an engine’ of cighty-horse power. Several witnesses testificd to the purchase of pistols... - LOUIS BERG, LETTER-CARRIER, *- was thereupon called to the stand. He was first questioned as to the numbers which the Metro- Dotitun: Block bore. In answer to questions, witness then stated he had instructions from the Superintendent of Carriers to deliver ut oom 8 Metropolitan Block, the office of Dexun & Mayo, all mail addressed to thom personally, or fo J. W. Winslow .& Co., H. Kuux & Co., the Monarch Saw Company, the Sprague Manufacturing Com- Pauy, the Juvenile Steam knyine Compuny. Mt. G. Sunford & Co., J. Wallace & Co., Prof. It. Hen- dricks, and other names which he could not now reoulicct. Witness then showed, by reference to his receipt book. that the registered letters, sent by the above witneases in the month of De- eetnber, 1890, were delivered.to and generally roceiptéd for by either Dean or Muyo. An attempt of the prosecution to show who receipted for other registered letters than these ‘brought forth an objection from Mr. Dow. In the discussion which ensued the Court had oc- casion to correct dir. Dow in an impression that the indictment. was for having received muil matter under so many different aliases. The in- dictment set forth that a scheme of fraud nad ‘Deen deviged, and that the -ollice bad been misused in furtherance of this scheme of fraud. ‘The Court decided to admit all evidence as to what letters were received by the accused under any names whatever. witness, continuing. testified that by in- structions from te former carrier of tha soute be was in the habit of delivering ‘to Mayo and Dean letters which were addressed to tiem or their aliases at numbers on Canal street and elsewhere which are vacant lots. . _ The cross-examfnation developed that witness could not, be positive that Denn receipted for any other‘ letters than’ those addressed to bhn- self and to the = company. . $ SEATON, agent for the. Andale Express Company, testi- Jied to baving bad conversations eee Mr. Dean about cluthes-wringers sent out by the Sprague Manufacturing Compauy. and , subsequent: about the pistols. Witness thought the articles nearly worthless; that be regerded the business #3 a swindle, and he refused to permit the ex- ress company to become.a- party to it. outcome of it was that the ex- press. company sent back all parcels of the kind unless prepaid: An employé. Hor- ace E. Stump, corroborated this. When he went to sce Mr. Dean about a large number of wring- ers which had been refused and returned by tho gonsignes without payment of charges, Mr. Dean said bo bad nothing to do with the articles, he having sold them. Mr, Schermerhborn, of the United States Ex- Press, testibed to similar experiences. Police-Sergeant Jobn Croak testified to hav- ing had several interviews with Dean and Mayo concerning complaints which were sent to the -Culef of Police about the‘ Bibies, the wringers, and the toy pistols, which the pid were selling. Court was then. adjournea until 10 o'clock Monday forenoon. = LAKE’S LATEST.
