The Granger stocks und Northern Pa- cifle were ulsv ift good demand, Little wasdone in the conlersy’ Metropolitan was advanced to %2;, but this was the result of manipulation, and not of demand for the stock. Points for rise in Western Union were put out, but the stock did uot show much vitulity. At the higher prices there was some realizing of profits, but the market closed strong. The public are buy- ing a tritle more freely. F Money was easy, but New York advices stated that it was expeeted to-work~more closely. Among other reasons for expecting easy money are large purchases of bonds by the Government aud the probability that the rush of moncy to the interior and of wheat to the centres is about over, and that large return remittances of money Will be made by the country to the cities. -\ better demand for bonds, an in creasing dis- position to buy good stocks, prospects of easier money, a belief that the ruilroad war {s ended as fur as low rates #0, the long period during which the stock market has been poutided by every adverse -intluence that could: be brought to bear on ft, ure some of tho rea- sons which induce the bulls to think that the turning polit cf the market has come, and that inistobe arising market till after the first of the year. Evidence that tho First National Bank ot New York ss favored by the Treasury Departmentat Washington, at the expense of Western banks, was shown us bya Chicago bank. This bank has received from the First National Bank of New York an extended 5 per cent bond, dated Oct. 25,1881, This bond had evidently . been thansferred at that date for the accommodation of the New York bank, notwithstanding the fact that it is the avowed rulo of the depart- ment that none of these bonds sbull be tran ferred for thirty days prior to Nov. 1,.when the interest isdue. ‘The very bank that received the bond dated Oct. 25, towbleb we refer, itself forwarded a lot of extended ds to the depu.t- ment for transfer one day too late, but forward- ed by telegraph in time for the transfer a full account of ull the details needed forentry. But the departinent returned the whole lot and re- fused to make the transfer. Aud yet, twenty- five days later, it was apie to make the trans- fer for the First Natfonul Bauk of New York. New York Mail. #13, ‘The frost decided advance in hortieMiture of late years has been the cultivation of cer- tain plants simply for the beauty of their Jeaves, without mgard to the shape or color of their flowers. ‘The coleus family was among the first to be utilized in this way, and the striking contrast of colors produced by massing its infinit varieties lend a new charm to landscape gardening. In the meantiine, many plants. possessing variegated leaves of even greater beauty have been introduced, as no enthusiast has amore eager desire for novelty than the true florist, whether amateur or professional. § ‘The newest addition to the list of purely ornamental plants is the croton tamily, one member of which produces the croton oil of commerce. Two or three years ago but very few varieties of erotons were known to our greenhouses, and those were of rather or- dinary and uninteresting appearance, the leaves being of adull green hue, slightly mot- tled with spots of sickly yellow on dull red. a\t the present writing portion of nearly all first-class conservatories fairly blazes with crotons bearing leaves of all the qolors of the rainbow, gid completely evlipsing in their builliancy the rich and gorzeous hues of our autumn: foliage. The eccentricity with which this coloring is displayed is the first thing to attract atten- tion, ‘The leaves on one plant may be delicately suftused- with rich yet sub- dued tints: while its neighbor, actly the same in -general characteris may be all aglow with -purple, s yellow, apparently laid on m blotches, ziv- ing as Strong a relief asa number of bright pigments upon a palet. _ Others show an equal contrast in the coluring of the old and new Ieaves of the same plant. No two leaves upoh any plant are variegated alike, and upon certain species of crotons every leat is ofa distinet color ur shade of color. ‘. ‘The typical croton may be unconvention- ally. deseribed as a rough, Knotty shrub, thristing out at the hight of two feet from the ground two or three straight, still, awk- ward branches, bare of leaves to the end, at which Jong, lanceolate leaves cluster in great luxuriance. Some of the leaves re- semble laurels in form; some are pike- shaped, from inch or two in length up to two’ feet, while others are like an exaggerated oak leaf, or the thrusting part of an ancient halberd. ‘The leaves are hard and dry, like those of the stuinac, whose Warm tints of red.are well counterteited In Gne or two varieties of croton: he Hower is nearly the sane in all. It is a single spike of minute, characterless blossoms,. like the mmignonet, only of less decided color. ‘The effect of a fine collection of crotons, like that owned by Bennett, of Flatbush, is perfectly dazzling. There is. one long honse. crowded with all the different varicties, ar- ranged in such’ 2 manner as to give the mos vivid contrasts. Down the middle of the house is a broad belt of the splendid eucharist lily, its luge masses of green leaves and waxy white clusters of flowers forming an admirable fuil to the Oriental panoply of the rows of crotonson each side, bordered all around by a zone of pals. Standing at one eud of the house and looking down its length, a vista or more than tropical warmth and lus uriance is presented. One can almost imag- ine it a triumphal procession in the Kast, in all its gautly trappings of gold, crimsdu, and of purple. Some of the long fronds are like fantastic banners; others wave iv the air like glittering plumage upon the turban of a chieftain; others are barbaric spears and javelins tipped. with blood, In the toreground is a miniature. jungle, in the shades of which ean be seen taintly the dirk brown ungainly stalks, upholding masses of dark purple. leaves, under which liuge sprawling green and yeliow Hzards seem to be reposing. Another plant has along nar- row leaf, mottled in the counterfeit. present- inent of the scales of the beautiful but dead- y cobra de capello. ‘The next, perhaps, nas dark, green foliage, like the laurel; bit each irregular blotches of dark, deep -erhnson, as if, the sh d just been sprinkled with the biood of the victim slain by the conquering spears in the van. “AN these glowing colors, the reds, the pur- ples, the violets, ereens, and yellows, in all theif changeable and intermingling shades, seem to form a grand combination in the magnificent Croton Victoria. Commencing withthe broad violet aud red leaves at the base of it8 leafy growth, the whole chromatic scale seems to. be represented by a eradual diminnendo until the apes is reached, Ww is crowned by a spike of bright yellow, with- out the admixture of any other colur. One whole Jeaf may be entirely of a dark bottle green, another pure red or violet, while those intermediate may be divided inte halves, of a different color, or; be covered by intricate tracery formed of ail thecharacter- i¢ colors of the family. * ‘The Croton Veitchii has a profusion of pale sage-green leaves, nearly rqund, and marked by pale. leprous spots of sickly yellow, and effect somewhat similar to that produced by the leaves of a popular member of the abutilon family. Croton Voluta has the most singular appearance of au; Its long oval leaves are curiously twisted into the form of 3 horns, bent inward toward the hich is completely hidden. Another resembles a small willow tree, with exug- gerated leaves falling in a cascade of red and gold. ‘The Croton Mutabil hough not showy, has its own’ idiosyncrasies, one of which is that the central stem of the main leat projects beyond the.end of the latter, and supports in its turn another smaller but perfect leaf. Nothing could show the pro- gressive nature of horticulture in this eoun- try better than the contrast between the few primitive specimens of cotton in vague but a short time azo and the brilliant displays of the same plant toda: _—<———<=—__——- Alligators as Peis—Many of ‘Them Bought by Women—Fondled and Taught Tricks.
