To the Merchants and Manufacturers of Chicago: A few public-spirited gentlemen have inaugurated the CHICAGO FAIR on a basis of great present success, and with a promise of a permanent and a greater success in coming years. They believe that Chicago is the fitting place for the great Agricultural Fair of the Northwest. Itis the centre of the largest and richest pastur- age and grain field of the globe; it is the largest of all Live Stock and Grain Markets; more railroads converge toward it than toward any other city in the world, and thus every facility is afforded the farmer and others to reach it. The projectors of the Fair have taken advantage of this fact, and the exhibition of Fine Live Stock on the Fair Grounds is exceedingly large and magnificent. An enter- prising sister city, St. Louis, so appreciates her great fair that one day of its holding is made a holi- day,--all banks, shops, and manu- factories being closed on that day. I have been petitioned to re- quest that our Merchants and Manufacturers do likewise in Chi- cago. I, therefore, most cheerful- ly and earnestly request and rec- ommend that Saturday, the 17th inst., be’ made a holiday by our great employers, so that theirem~ ployes may see what Chicago and the great Northwest can do in the production and display of superior Live Stock. CARTER H. HARRISON, Mayor. The Great Fair GOES ON Until the Entire Pro- gramme is Finished. Saturday, Sept. 17, WILL BE THE GREATEST DAY EVER WITNESSED ON A Fair Ground in America.
