To the Editor of The Chicagu Tridune, Rocnesren, N. Y., July 22—Comet "C" of Iss], diseovered by Prof. Schueberle, of Anu Arbor, Mich, and which was identified by my- self on the morning of the 16th as x comet, pre- sents a flne appearance in the telescope. Ov- servations made this morning showed ft to be in rizht ascension about six hours, und declination north about 42 degrees, or in the constellation of Auriga, near Beta Aurige. The apparent mouon is very slow, and is a little enst of north. The tail is about three-quarters of x degree long. and increases in widtn toward the end, and resembles much in appearance the tail of comet “B' Isl (now near the north star), except when at its brightest—and it is faiuter and straight. Were it not for the interference of tne moonlight, 1 am confident lnrger tril would be seen quite clearly ‘detined. It is rapidly increasing in brizhtuess, und will so increase until it maxes its perihelion passage, It will be whicb will occur on or about Aug. 18. nearest tno earth on or xbout Aug. Chandier, of the Cambridse Observator computed the orbit and pubiished the ephemeris in the Science Ob xtending to Sept. 4. According to the best calculations, the comet ill be twenty-five times as bright on Aug. 20 as it was at the date of discovery, which would in- dicato that it will be one of the most conspicu- ous comets of the century. ‘The elements of 1 orbit are wholly unlike these of any comet hith- erto obser’ o that it can neither be Obler’s nor: Pon's of ISI. nor the comet of Ri, Ono of the singular things about it is that it follows comet * 8 of 1851 so closely, its position when discov- ered belng almost identical with comet B when first seen in that location. Of course it is im~- possible yet to predict with certainty, but it would seem as if it would eclipse the glories of comet Tt is now visible with an opera-zias: and ina few days it will be visible to the nake eye, first us ahazy spot in the early morning ‘and then will grow brighter exch day. The nucleus i3 not yet as bright as was the nucleus of cowet B of 1851, but it will probably increase in density and it_ approaches the sun. I Bave rec letters from several ns- tronomers questioning if I saw a tail on the morning of the itth. 1 certainly did see one, and bad not the balf-moon interfered others might huve seen it equally well. At the pres- ent time the theoretical brightness is twice whut it was at the time of discovery, but my observation this morning does not justify this theory; But the bud state of the atmosphere probably vitiated tho observation. .A week has elapsed iscovery of the Comet C of 1x21, and no other person hus filed a claim for the Warner comet prize of 3200, and it will undoubt- dly be awarded to Prof. J. M. Schacherle, as- nt nt the Michigun Uuiversity Observatory. Very respectfully, LEWIS IFT, Director Warner Observatory. An establishment that does business by electricity; that has telephonic com- munication with every part of the city; that executes and delivers all orders with electric dispatch; that is lit up by electricity. People troubled with the gout, blues, loss of appetite, etc., while purchasing goods in this mammoth establishment, under the beneficial influence of this won- derful light, which physicians say is Nature’s own cure, have found immediate relief and gone home with light hearts and hearty appetites ‘to enjoy a dinner from the many good things selected from this immense house.
