In 1877, Stephen Biith was trled In this city for murdering an old man named James Davidson, and was found guilty of manslaughter, recelving o sontence of twene ty-one years In the Jeffersonville Penltone tiary, Mr. Adam Swmith, father of Stephen, commmenced proceedings to secure a pardon, but the effort talled. Mr. Smith was startled by recelving o telegram from the Warden of the prison April 24, stating that % 111§ BON WAS DEAD, Mr. Smith went to the prison and found the remnains of his son In a coflin, 1o demanded to see the body for the reason of Identifying it, but tho prison officials refused him this right, telling him thut they were cortain of that fact. and it he so desired they wonld give him & certificate.
