TRACK TALK. ‘The Rochester Driving Park will give a Tunning meeting next summer, . * Dwyer Bros. have sold Jeriche to J. H. Me- Cormack. He willbe put at cross-country work. a é Mr. O. B. Dickinson, of this city, has sold to Mr. L. C. Merrick the black mare Minnie, well known to road riders. Price, $1,060. Mr. Keene’s colt Seminole, by Australian, is well thought of for the Epsom Derby by the turf writers of the Englis sportmg pa- pers. ‘Thomas Puryear, the well-known trainer, has gone 1o England to assist Jacob Pincus jn training Mr. Pierre Lorillard’s horses at Newmarket. = Mike Burke has purchased the gray mare Jeunie C., by Blue Bull, and will trot her hextsummer. Mr. Burke also. has several other trotters, and will hereafter devote a portion of his time to turf sports. The American horses recently sent to En- gland were sold at Tattersall’s recently, and brought fair prices. ‘Thirty-six were shipped 2:95; Minnie R., 2:24; Nancy, 2:233¢; Pick- ‘ard, 2:24%; Wilbur B., 2:243¢. + San Francisco papers report St, Julien as peing in unusually finecondition. He is being wintered at San‘Afateo, and is jogged about ten miles daily without shoes. He will come East in the spring, accompanied by Santa Clans, the latter horse being brought along to trot in the stallion: purses to be given at Chicago and elsewhere. ‘Mr. George Lorillard’s stable for 1981 will include Monitor and Ferida, 5 years; Qrena- da and Sensation, 4 beats: Spinaway, Green- land, Blazes, Sir Hugh, Aella, Topsy, Sir ‘Walter, Santiterer, and Maraltion, 3 years; and Volucia, Ranger, Islip, Venture, alc= dale, Vanguard, Rambler, Dover, CO, ‘anta, and Genara, Bouncer, Memento, Glance, 2year-olds. Referring to the recently issued program for the Chicago trotting meeting,, -the en tucky Live Stuck Record says: “Taking al in all it is one of the best, most liberal, and taking trotting-programs ever issued, and ts author, whoever he is, deserves great credit; but Mr. HL V. Bemis, who bas done s much for the Chicago Driving Park, we suspect deserves that honor.” ‘The odds against the horses entered in the Coney tend Cu ‘areas follows: 3 to = against Luke Blackbum; 6 to 1 against Parole, Monitor, and Uncas;_ 10 to Lagainst Report, Glidelia, Grenada, ‘Sensation, Fal- setto, Ferncliffe,_ Glenmore, Long Taw; 15 to 1 against Quito, Elias Lawrence. Men- delssohn, Fonso, Greenland; 20 to l against Barnton, Baltic, By-the-Way, Compensation, George McCulloush, Springfield, and Bowl- ing Green; 25 to 1 against, Trish. King, Ran- doiph, Jim Malone, Erdenheiin; 30 to 1 against Ada Glen, and Kinkead; | 40 to 1 against ‘Merrimack, Ricochet, and Pequot; 50 to Lagainst Edenberry, Spinner, Vaude- ville, and Tom Kinseila. Last June, at Prospect Park, N. Y., a race was trotted between Edward, record 2:19, and Richard, record 2:21, for SS, 000 a side,— Eaward being owned by* Mr. Frank Work and Richard by Mr. Foster Dewey. When the match was made horsemen thought that Edward had much the best of it, as he had shown more speed than bis competitor, aud vas believed to be a thoroughly game horse. He was trained privately by John Murphy, while Richard was trotted several hard races before the day of the match. ‘Tne result was that Richard won easily, and in slow time. ‘Another match bas now been made, to be trotted at Hartford, Conn., June 5, “Mr. Work betting $20,000 to $10,000 on his horse. He now offers to repeat the wager with any erson anxious to accept it, Afr. ais Lorillard backs Richard. ; ‘The English racing statistics for 1890 have just been published.” Lord Falmouth heads the list ot winning owners With £16,009, which is £7,000 less than he won in 1879, when he stood second to Count Lagrange, Who carried off £3,000. Prince Soltykolf stands second on the list, with £13, and Se Crawford third, with £13,087, ‘The Duke of Westminster comes fourth, and fs the only other winner who reached’ five - figures. Count Lagrange placed only £0,090 to his credit. Of the winning jockeys F. Archer scored 120 victories out of 362 mounts. Ford: | ham rode 357 rates, winning 105, Cannon finished first seventy-nine times, and C. Wood rode seventy winners out of 4383 races. Isis thought that Archer: will not be seen much in the saddle next yeal, by reason of his increasing weight. In ninety of the priucipal races last year the prizes were fvorth from $2,500 up to S31,875. ‘The Mau- chester Suminer Cup bids fair to become as valuable a race as the Derby or St. Leger, as. $25,000 isin future to be given as added noney. Hermit is at the head ot the win- ning sires, twenty-three of his progeny hav- ing won nearly $150,000. Adventurer stands next, with $50,000 ayrainst his name. ‘Chen follow Bertram, the - Duke, Rosicrucian, Favonius, and Doncaster, in the order named. COUNTY AFFAIRS. ‘An Unsuccessful Attempt at au Escape =A Small Jali-Fight. Humphrey Monaban has been: appointed Bailiff in Judge Tuley’s Court, vice Gibson, de- ceased. Ae Nels Nelson was sent over bs. Justice Hammer for bastardy.. The girl is Elsie Maira, and Nel- son swears be will not marry ber; but that is what all the fathers say when first locked up. Cyrus Smith, the match-bond man, though in the debtors’ department of the Jail, and allowed privileges denied most of the other prisoners, is yery moody, and cats little or nothing.- A close watch Is kept upon bim to see thut-he does: not commit suicide. A There is such'a great diversity of opinion ‘amoog the County Commissioners about the yault fittings, ete. for the new Court-House, that no agreement has been reached, and the matter ig likely to be fought over at the Board meeting to-morrow. ‘- The Committee on :Judiciars, of the County Board, met yesterday afternoon, The bond of Dutfy Brothers, bread contractors, for $5,000, was exuinined and xpproved, na were also those of Butcher Bipper for $40,0v0, ‘und S. Bt Harris for $17,003. ‘A woman who was in attendance upon Judge Hawes’ court yesterday claimed that her pocket hud been picked of $5u, but ber appearance did not indicate that she was apt to buveso much mogey, and little credit was ziven to her state- meat ‘A. T, Mason, who escaped from the jail some time ago und was recaptured, still sticks toit that he is not A. T. Mason. itis true that this fg not bis right name, but be has been fully iden- tified as the. mun who gave the name of A. ‘tT. Mason and was locked up to await trial ona churge of burglary. He filed a plea in abute- ment yesterday before Judge Moran, setting up that be is Frank Smith. His check is sublime, sagtwo women who used to visit him when be was in jail before bave called to sce him since be was returned, and usked to see the same man they had formerly visited. There was fight in the jail yesterday after- noon, or rather a case of assault, a3 only one person did anything. Tho purtics were John Dingwall and Robert Ronaine. These two and Jobn M. Boyle were pals in a burglary, und when Ronuine was caught he ‘squealed on the others. For this they were angry at him, and threatencd to cut bis throat. All three were sentenced yes- terday, and on their return to the jail Dingwall attacked Ronaine with a club,—the upright of nebair-back,—and_ struck him severa! times on the heud before the Bailitfs sepurated them. Rtonaine was not. much hurt, though the blows gave bim the beaduache. Dingwall was locked Up in the dungeon by way of punishment. : ‘A prisoner named Henry Paxton, who had been uwarded two years in the Penitentiary for largens, made an unsuccessful attempt to escape yesterday morning. When Judge Hawes sentenced him, Acting-Bailiff Schmidt took charge of him for the purvose of removing bim to the jail, catching hold of his collar. When they got fito the. hallway, on the third toor, Paxton’ broke away, and’ ran down-stairs, Schmidt following. After balf the flight bud ‘Deen passed. Schmidt made a grab for Paxton, put the latter dodged, and the builiff lost bis balance. and fell. to the bottom. Before’ be could pick himself up Paxton bad gotten fato the crowd coming out of the Criminal Court, which bad just ud- journed, and wus caught by two men, whovheld him until be was secured. Schmidt wasn’t burt much. Sheriff Mann suspended him pending an investigation. ‘The Chiet Bailiff of the Criminal Court, Sir. Severin, seems to be responsible. All from this side, but, as half a dozen died on the voyage, the venture was not a paying one. Rose of Washington, record 2:2134, is be- ine wintered at the stable of her owner, William Sinsabaugh, on Millard avenue. Rose has entirely recovered from the scci- dent which laid herup the greater part of Jast season. Gus Wilson, who drives the trotters owned by Mr. W. C.'France, of St. Louis, was in Chicago last week, and during his stay pur- chased from Gus Glidden the, brown inare. Blackwood Maid, by a son of Blackwood, for ‘Mr. Benoist, of St. Louis. Blanch Amory, Catchfly, and Barrister, a trio of well-known Kentucky trotters, ar- rived in Chicago yesterday, consigned to Peter V. Jounson, who will drive them next season. Barrister is a 4-year-old, and ob- tained a record of 2:34 last season. ‘The Boston Herald says that John Splan, who has been spencing several weeks in that city, does not know exactly what horses will compose his stable next season. He js cer- tain to have Wedgewood and Parana, and will probably take alonga couple of green ones. St: Louis, who isnow second favorit for the Epsom Derby, is owned by the -Duke of Montrose, who races under the name of “Mr. Crawfurd.” He was purchased asa yearling for 2,200 guineas. Lord Falimouth’s filly Bal Gal is first favorit for both the Derby and Two Thousand Guineas. In deference to the wishes of t ose ownIng horses eligible to the: race,-Mr. hi W.-P. Slowly the Twilight, with veil of gray, Covered the blushes left by Day; Then lingered awhile to catch a Sight Of the gems which deck'd approaching Night. Methinks e’en now, the long miles away, 1see the close of thnt Summer's duy, With the wave beneath us, the rocksaround, And here in the distunce the music's sound. I can tell each word and recall each tone Of ber whispered speech as we sut alone, And fancy fscent the perfume yet From a sprig she wore of mignonet. A head bow’d down, and a blushing face, ‘A uid Yes, make the very place Sacred to me as some hallowed 50d. Late by the foot of an Angel trod. ‘That little work, like magician’s wand, Chang'd the whole scene into Fairyland: Dull Earth bad vanished, and ail around Becume in a moment enchanted ground. Hope's sweetest tlowers perfumed the air, And Love's bright buds were everywhere. The place she sat, with its footstool green, ‘Was a throne, and she the Fairy Queen. The scene has vanished, but’st{li to adore There remains my Queen for evermore; _ And sul she reflects the golden ray Which lit the close of that Summer's day. — i Winchester’s A2ypophosphites will cure consumption, coughs, weak lun; bronchitis, and general debility.
