One after another of its bullders was ruined financially, tho last one, Isaac N. Swain, being driven into his grave on ae- count of his troubles, This morning tho aplendid Union Mills wero blown down by the force of an explosion that was feltin the most remote part of tha city. Since the death of Swain the mitt has been operated by his executors, and, for the first time In its history, was doing a profitablo business, RUNNING NIGIT AND DAY. The cause of the disaster was the explosion of ono of tho boilers, which were located In a brick addition to the main building, ‘This, and half the mill, fell in an immenso heap, burying beneath the débris three men, Fortunately, the terror of those who col- lected was not incrensed by the breaking out of fire, An alarm was promptly turned In, and the’ firemon assembled to render such ald og might bo needed, but, as coal was used for fuel, thofire was oxtinguished by the escaping steam, and all hands turned their attontion tothe work of rescuing the workmen, if allye, or recoverlng thelr bodics if dead, But, before any men could be Induced to zo to work, the firemen were obliged to push down the remains of n wall left standing, A gaug of workmen then commenced remov- ing the rulus, TNE crown, by this time, hind increased to a multitude by the constunt nrrivals of people from various parts of the city, and eagerly awalted the result of the search for victims.
