THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31, 13 The Sinking of the Thomas A. Scott in Milwaukee Bay by the Avon. How the Question of Responsi. pility Is Regarded Here— Cargo Insurance. Barge Northern Light Ashore at Har- risville, and Likely to Be.a Total Loss, image. to the Mary Collins? Cargo ? oe Settled—The Steam-Barge Germania, min Freights Active and Firm—Local _ and Generel Notes of In- terest, THE DISASTER RECORD. THE SINKING OF THE SCOTT. gem {s nothing new to add to the details printed in Tue Tumpuxe yesterday of the sink- ingof the Anchor-Line barge Thomas A. Scott fa Milwaukee Bay by tho Union Steamboat Company's propeller Avon. The Avon arrived pere yesterday morning, giving no external in- gicaton of having been in. collision except a parespoton her étem just above the draft-line, where the paint had been rubbed off by: the proken timbers of the Scott. The hit was such asquare one that tho stem suffered no in- jury whatever. Tho point where the collision curred is rigbt in the track of vessels out- ward-bound for Chicago, particularly on dark nights, when Captains take purticular pains to avoid getting too near the South Polat reef, and the disaster, therefore, creates no particular surprise. The wonder is that something of tho, ind has not occurred sooner, as it has for years ‘been & common practice with the Anchor and ower lines to drop their tows thera rather than goto the trouble of leaving them farther north, where no harm could possibly befall them. ‘The gollision was the subject of general discussion among vessel inen yesterday, the poser being to fix the responsibility. Someridiculed the idea of attempting to steer between two lights placed as closens those on the Scott must have been, while others held that the Scott was to blame in exhibiting two anchor-lights when the sailing mules provide for only one. The rule bearing on the matter is as follows; “Rule 10—All vessels, whether steam-vessels orsail-veseels, when at anchor in roadsteads or fairways, suall, between sunset and sunrise, ex- hibit where it can best be seen, but at x hight not exceeding twenty feet abore tho bull, a white jightina globular lantern of eight inches in diameter, und so constructed as _to show a clear, uniform, and unbroken light, visible all around the horizon, and at a distance of at least one mile. Judging from a neutral standpoint.—after having tuken into consideration the condition of the atinosphere, the dangerous position chosen foran anchoring-ground, and the plurality of . Hgts ~it will prove dificult to fix the responsi- bility for the disaster, and liability for the dam- age done, upon the propeller Avon. ‘Tne cargo of the Scott, 44,000 bushels of corn, wes shipped by Charles Mair &Co., commission merchunts. It is insured for 319,800 in the Con- tnental, of New York, represented here by John Prindiville, A visit to the agency yes- terday atternoon for the purpose of ob- w0oing ims information was met by aresort to wonk. strategy, evidently animated br a desire to avoid telhng the truth. But the truth was fot at, nevertheless, though through another and perfectly reliable source. The tn- furance upon the barge, if any exists, is not known, The headquarters of the line be at Buffalo, it would naturally be placed there. The entire damuge will reach $45,000. THE MARY COLLINS’ CARGO. Telegraphic advices from Butalo announce that the insurance company holding the risk upon the flax-seed cargo of the schooner Mary Collins has effected a settlement of tha damage eustained by it during the run down from Chicago to Buffalo in the recent beavy weather. Atotl loss was adjudged on 1,800 bushels, and on 8,00 bushels the Company settled for 10 cents rbushel. The total amount of the’ damage il agreed upon is about $3,500. BARGZ NORTHERN LIGHT STRANDED. According to later advices the barge Northern Light, und not the steam-barge George L. Col- well, ig ushore ,at Harrisville, Lake Huron. A. correspondent writes under dite of the 26th: “Yesterday when the Light had between 200 ‘and 30) fect on board the wind began to freshen and blow from the southeast. Colwell soon came round and gave ordors to move from the Jumber dock to the ‘Goose Nest.” Some delay in getting around made matters worse, and without a tug it was impossible to shift the ves- sel over. However, it was attempted, and the consequence is that the Light now lies on the beach full of water, with her bottom knocked ‘to picees.”” ‘he Northern Light came out originally as a ropelicr, and in her prime was a favorit Lake superior passenger boat, She was buili at Clevelund by Lafrinier & Son_in 1858, and there- fore nus attained the age of 22 yeurs. Her rat- ing was in the C's, and her vaiue about $3,600. OTHER DISASTERS. The schooner Rutherford had a rough trip of it On Lake Eric she sprung a leak and ber pomps choked. Sbe ran intu Port Maitland, where she secured the services of a tug and was towed to Port Colborne. The steam-barge Germania is still fast just outside of Cedar Point. Thetug Myrtle and a lighter took off her cargo, and the work of rais- ing her will be commenced next week. : THE THOMAS A. SCOTT. Spectal Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune.
