The Close of Last Week Finds + Chicago Comfortably in the Lead. 1 | A Game Won from Buffalo Yes- | terday by Dint of Su- perior Fielding. i ‘Worcester Beats Boston, Troy Provi- dence, and Cleveland Cin- cinnati Yesterday. . H 1 ‘THE CHAMPIONSHIP. i Atthe end of the second full week of the | League champtonship the positions of the con- testing nines ‘have undergone considerable change, and Chicago. baving played five games this week, has stepped to the front handsomely, defeating Cincinnati on Monday and Tuesday and Buffalo on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. ‘Worcester has dropped back to second place, having fost once last week w Boston, besides be- ing behind one in games played by reason of rain. Cleveland isa close third, with as many won and one more jost than Worcester; Boston fourth, with four lost and won; Providence and ‘Troy ate for fifth, each with three won and five Jost, and Cincinnati and Buffalo abreast in the rear, with two.won and seven lost. During the coming week Chicago is to meet stronger opponents in the Cleveland team, who play here Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday; Worcester goes to Troy on the same dates: Providence “to Boston for the 16th and 22d, and Boston to Prov- idence for the 20th; and Buffelo to Cincinnati for the 18th, 20tn, and 22d. At the close of yester- day's play the standing of the different nines was 2s follows: UOAL 1078087 op gned| “onwoio, STOEL} MOPRIOLOAL 8 6 3 6 CHICAGO VS, BUFFALO. ‘More than 2,000 people attended the game yes- terday afternoon between Chicago and Buffalo, and saw the home team win by a soore of 6 to 3. merely by superior fielding, as the batting was about equal ou both sides, and strong on nel- ther.. For the first six Innings the visitors were blanked, but in the seventh safe hits ‘by Bicha rdson, Poorman, and Crane, with errors by Quest and Flint, allowed them to get away with threo unearned runs. They néver saw first base after that, however, and at their half ‘of the ninth inning retired with the third de- feat seoreé against them in Chicago. It was in the second inning that Chicago broke the ice with two tallies. Kelly, after hitting nine fouls over left fleld fence and letting in a boy each time, batted a ternfic ner which Hornug, like everybody elso, misjudged, and on which Kelly made third. After Goldsmith hud been put out ona weak hit to Poorman, Flint tried tbidatter with a strong bounder too hot to handle cleanly, and Kelly came in from third with an earned run. Burns hita savage grounder which Rich- aréyen did well to stop, but which he threw wild tofirst, carrying Burns to second and Flint tothird. Flint then attempted to make home on the passed ball, but was caught at the plate by Rowe to Poorman, Burns: making third, whence he tallied after having been caught off that base, Rowe dropping the ball thrown by Richardson in trying to run him out. Quest was third outona fly to Rich- ardson. Inthe nextinning base hits by Dal- rymple and Anson and costly errors by Crane and Rowe gave Chicago two runs, the inning be- ing redeemed by a fine throw-in from Hornung ‘whereby Anson was caught at the plate in at- tempting totally. The run in the fifth was ob- tained by Gore, who hit for his basc, was ad- vanced to second on Williamson's strike-out, ‘and came all the way home ona wild pitch. In the eighth Williamson was given a life by Walk- er's muff of a ball thrown by Force, stole second ol , and was brought in by Goldsmith's base bit t4 ieft centre. Tne brilliant fielding features of the game included the very effective pitching of both Poorman and Goldsmith, double plays by Crane and Walker in the second. by Hornung ‘and Howe in the third, and by Dalrymple and Anson in the second. Flint’serrors were those ef ahigh Besa tosepnd and of a failure to {ouch out x runner at hone plate on a quick re- turn of.the bal! by Quest, and Anson dropped ina most unaccountable manne: a ball well thrown by Quest. The Buffalos took desperate chances throughout in their base-running, and in that way scored their three runs in the sev- epth nee: TRE SCORE. ° CM Sl wooummoun el poowmuonel & Oc9)) ates rs jornung, 1. £.. He was captain of the orig- inal Haymakers Base-Bull Club, and acquire fume asin heavy batter.and u sure ficlder. fore his illness he was a fine specimen of physi eal manhood, and prided himself on feats of muscular skill and endurance, and it was little thought he would become a victim to consump- tion. This leaves only three of the original flaymakers above the sod, Steve King, Willlam H. Crayer, and Cal Penfield. SUBURBAN. HYDE PARK. ‘There is considerable talk atound the village of moving the-Vllage-Hall and offices to Grand Crossing, and there: erecting a structure which will cost something like $50,000. The grounds on which tne removal is suggosted are that Grand Crossing is about the centre of the village, and is the point which can be reached most easily by the trains from all parts, it being divided by the Illinois Central, Michigan Southorn, and Fort Wayne Railroad: tracks, und the town being built around their crossing. These lincs are also used by the ChTcago, Lufayette & Cincinnati and Michigan Central Railronds, while the Bulti- more & Ollo is about a quarter of a mile north of the crossing. ‘The southern portion of the town, which is de- voted to munutactories, favors the removal, whlic those neur the present site of the hull do not care to bave it retained there, as ivis of no special benefit to them. At the north end of the village a number favor it from the fact that if the mutter of a site’ is not settled before long there ure chances of the hall beiug moved still further south than Grand Crossing in the course of a few years. ‘The purties who seem to take the most inter- est in it appear to think that land can be bought very cheaply now if the village requires a large place, while if only. a small space is required it will be donated. Grand Crossing promises to be a leading centre Very shortly, 1s the factories now located there will’ bring others. The town ishappy in the possession of a watch factory, tack tuctory, a foundry, the Wilson Sewing-Ma- chine Works, a case actory, a linseed-oil mill, a chemical works, and a barb-fence works, while there is some talk of aboot and shoe factory locating there. There will be an important art sale at O'Brien's Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, when about 150 pictures will be disposed of at auction. ‘These works are from the studios of home and Eastern artists, and'many of them are brilliant examples. Among the artists represented are George Inness, James H. Beard, J. G. Brown, M. J. Heade, D. F. Bigctow, Jasper Lawman, H. F. Spread, Lyell C. Carr, Eugene Torrey, Marston Ream, J.B. Sloan, 8. K. Johnson, and Henry Koch. Most of the pictures haye been from time to time noticed in THE TrraUNE. ‘The out-door sketching-clus3 of the Academy of Fine Arts is announced to begin next Wednes- jay, under the direction of Miss Anole Shaw. "This class sperde the whole day in the field, and svorks ut; oil, water-color, or black and white, on ‘Wednesday and Saturday of each weck, or the next fuir day. Miss Shaw's excellence as a land- scape painter, and the use of the whole day for prance, bid fair to make the class highly sutis- factory. ‘The other classes of the art school are hard at work in competition for the prizes to be awarded ut the end of the term for the best studies from life, the untique, ete. The Satur- day forenoon indoor sketching cluss continues free toall interested in quick sketching. ‘The ladies’ life class has just closed, and the even- ing classes will continue but a week: or two longer. The lectures on artistic anatomy will continue nearly to the end of the term. Mr. Robertson now bus charge of the afternoon classes on alternute days with Mr. Earle. | ST. LOUIS. : Mr. French, the Secretary of the Academy of Fine Arts, recently made a visit of inspection to the kindred institution in St. Louis, and reports the following information: ‘The St. Louis School of. Fine Arts is a depart- ment of Washington University, under the direction of Prof. H. C. Ives, one of the most competent art-educutors in the country. The whole number of students is 370, of whom two- thirds are members of the classical or scientific departments of the University, and one-third exclusively art students. All the branches or- dinarily included in a school of fine-art, draw- ing, pulatiug, modeling, and design, are pro- vided for, and the school is in such a state of efficiency’ as to compare favorably with any art- school in the country, East or West. The collection of autotypes, etchings, and stereoscopic slides for illustrating lectures upon design and history {s particularly good and tull. The present rooms of the school are in the main University building, and ure 200 feet long, all “north light,” and 40 feet wide, with the use of lecture-reoms besides. To this will be added soon the cluss-rooms in the Crow Museum, the new fine-art building. ’ ‘The Crow Museum is built by the munificence of one mau, the Hon. Wayman Crow, and when completed will pe presented by Mr. Crow to the ‘Art Department of Washington University. It js devoted exclusively to tine-nrt purposes, the front part of stone and the sing of brick, con- taining galleries for pictures and sculpture each 140x490 feet, an audience-room for 600 persons, and various class-rooms and studios. The wulis are up as far as the eaves, and the building will be ready for occupancy next fall. The cost of the building, exclusive of land, will be about $110,000. It is not fire-proof, which is to be re- gretted. * Compared with our own vigorous beginning of. an art school, the number of students at St. Louis, not otherwise connected with the Uni- versity, is about the same,—]20 or 1. The rates of tuition are from one-quarter to qne- half higher thun here, but our school is much nearer self-supporting.’ The teachers employed number nearly the sume, and itis hoped t some arrangement for the interchange of serv- ices may be mude next year, whereby the staff of both will be practically increased, The energy and enthusiasm of Mr. Ives, to whout the fine-art development at St. Louis is largely, if not chietly due, cannot be too highly raised. : Itis certain that the sonntey tributary bat cu cago furnishes more patronage to an art insti- tution than that about St. Louis, and that there is more demand here fora comprehenslye muse- ‘um and school. ACADEMY OF FINE ANTS. ‘The term of the first Board of ‘Trustees of the ‘Academy of Fine Arts recently expired, and xt the aunual meeting of governing members held afew days agothe organization was perfected by the el jection of twenty-one Trustees, to bo divided into ‘groups for terms of one, two, and three sears, A few changes were made {a the jourd, which, as elected, 1s as follows: Geo Armour Lf Leiter, Jaines H-Dole, 8. The doorkeeper then told the Emperor of his doubts; upon which the latter went to a writing-tuble in his room, Which was connected by telegraph with Gen.’ Gourko's residence, and telegraphel.. “Where is Gourko?” “At home,” was the re- ply.
