5 ww vHE CHICAGO ‘TRIBUNE:. SUNDAY MAY y = ~__ BOARDING AND LODGING. __ BOARDING AND Lopeine. | ENANCHALY MISCELLANEOUS, REAL ESTATE. Real Estate Dull for Lack of Buyers. Prospecting in the Neighborhood of South Chicago. Principal Sales of the Week— Building Permits. Extraordinary Activity of Real Estale In New “York—Miscellaneous. Beal estate was quiet during the past week. ‘There were not many buyersin the market, and few sales of importance can be reported. 'The situation here is in marked contrast with that at New York and Boston, where the inter est in real estate appears to be on the increase, and the volume of transactions has RECENTLY BEEN EXTRAORDINARY. The announcement that the Pullman works were going to Kensington does not appear to have been much of astimulusto the waning energies of the market. The ground there has been covered py prospecters looking for bar- gains, but owners haye no disposition to sell ou the eve of what they believe willbea boom, The search fur good purchases extends as far as South Chicago. The new structure of the North Chicago Rolling-Mills is being rapidly pushed forward. The walls of the first story are nearly finished. The woolen mill at Sonth Chicago, destroyed by fire some time ago, is bsing rebuilt with valuable improve- ments, and OTHER NEW ENTERPRISES are spoken of. Some very sanguine talk is beard of the future values of property in South Chicago, and along the shore, between the South Park and South Chicago. Persons interested in ‘Washington Heights, La Grange, Evanston, and otber suburbs are quietly presenting the claims Of thelr favorit localities in the belief that, dull as the market now is, it cannot long remain so. The desirability of the PAVILION PARKW4Y ‘end vicinity, between the Lake Shore and Rock Island and the Western Indiana tracks, for building purposes, is just beginning to be appre- tinted. The easy aceess to and from the city via the four roads, to-wit: the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern, Rock Island, Fort Wayne, and the Western Indiana, snd the cheap fares or five cent rides. which the newroad will probably compel the pthers to adopt very oon, are having their effect. wr EN. ison, WhO has a frontage of sev- f eral hundred feet on the Parkway, is about to set out 100 trees, and will probably erect this fall or in the spring a row of handsome houses. Bids will soon be asked for a tunnel under the river at Clybourn place, through which to ex- tend a sixteen-inch water-main. ‘Work on the Harrison street tunnel will begin to-morrow. The record of real-estate transactions in the New York Herald of lust Sunday showed that on the preceding day, May 1, they aggregated near- ly $3,000, The transfers were unusuall, heavy during the whule month of April, as there was a eneral and powerful awakening to the prospective value of New York property. On this the Herald sure editorially: |“ We huvo no doubt that the sharp-sighted busincss-men and capitalists who have embarked so actively fn these vasttransactionsunderstand tho nature of their investments. They are too keen and shrewd to buy property whose value can depre- ciate. They know what they are about, and their contident judgment that real estate in’ New York must continue to rise, {8 one of the most hopeful signs of the times.” : he Boston Transcript says: ‘Real estate is rapidly increasing in value in Chicago. A lot on the corner of State and Washington, streets, 0 by 91% feet, with buildings worth $75,000, was lutely gold for $295,000, making the clear value of tho land, shallow as it was, $2,400 a front foot. ‘This is the largest price ever paid for real estate ju Chicago, The estate contains 8235 fect of lund, and, subtracting the value of the bulld- ings, it would give a price of $26.50 per square foot'for the land. In Boston the highest price that can be learned of by auction was that of the lot on the eust corner of State and Kibly streets, where, in 1873, the buildings to be de- molished, the successful bid was ‘$94,000, or a little more than $i per square foot. At pri- vate sale, probably the highest price ever ob- tained here was that for the Jackson estute on Winter and Washington streets, which, covered by buildings comparatively worthless except for costly alteration and repuir, brought something more than $1W0 per equare foot. ————=__ NATURE, Thou'rt loveliest now, dear Mother Earth, for Sprin; > Around thy form her emerald robe doth fling, ‘And garly trip along the laughing hours, While Mora gems thy breast with fulrest flowers, Yet Nature's face is scarred with this great wrong: The weak are ever preyed on by the strong, Who can look on the Ocean vast at rest, When, wNight’s pale Queen glides slowly to the esi Ando’er bk flings her tender, trembling beams, ‘As though to lure him to the land of dreams, And noe feel Nature's power? Yet ‘neath the leep Full many a monster grim doth swim or creep, And ail their murderous instincts they employ ‘To crush the weak, to slaughter and destroy. Or if upon some forest grand we look, Sublimest page in Nature's wondrous book, Entranced we listen as the wind-swayed trees Pour forth to Heaven their plaintive melodies. Each senseigcharmed. But hark! yon startled cry From song-bind's throat proclaims the hawk is nigh; How swiftly doth the feathered murderer dart And thrust his talons through his victim's heart, And thus ‘tis always throughout Nature's plan, From tiny insect up to God-like man. Might still is Right; the strong hand still doth reel ‘With the life-current of the helpless weak; And Nature's face is scarred with the great wrong, ‘The weak are ever preyed on by the strong. BMLay, 1580, Roxserr TURSEY. New York Editors of To-Day—The Active and Managing Men of the Metropolitan Press, Howard's Letter’ (n Philadelphia Times. The active men on the papers to-day range from 25 to 5) years of uge. Mr. Connery, the managing editor of the Herald, is 44 or 43 years of age, tallandthin. Mr. Ford, the de facto editor of the Times, is about 45, short and thin. Mr. Reid, the managing editor of the Times, 13 48, tall and well proportioned. Mr. Whitelaw Heid is a little this side of 50, very tail, and lat- terly inclining to stoutness, It has been the general impression for some time past that Mr. Hassard, Mr. J. RG, Hussard, one of the best musical writers of the country, was the manag- ing editor of the Tribune. The factis that Mr. Whitelaw Heid’s former stenographer, Mr. Nich- olson, has gradually had the duties of that po- sition placed upon him, and to-day he is all in all as the important sepresentative of Mr. Reid, I should judge him to be 50 years of age, tall and spare. Ballard Smith, . the managing editor of the Sun, is about 40, medium bight, and thin. Oukey Hall, the manuging editor of the World, must,be 2 or 53, quite tull, and larze-framed.” I don’t recall— Jet_me sce,—I believe the city editors of the various papers range from 25 to 45. It may be that Shanks, of the Tribune, is a little over that, but he doesn't show it, and Harry Hill, of the Herald, may be a trifle under that. ‘A ni phase of reporterdom is fast developing in met- ropolitan journalism. Very many ae the re- riers are graduates of our best colleges, Efinging in addition to’ natural aptitude and a superstructure of comparative cult- Huenctich Lebink must in the ond be service- ure, whiel é journalism. It is found that able to modern J ms spunea. less editing is needed in the things. ‘here was a time when a reporter's copy needed so much revision as to make it almost necessary to rewrite the entire matter, Now ic becomes largely a question of space, and if that is ample a trifling revision, and general- jy then as a matter of taste, !s noeded. In ‘Yiew of the fact that there nre hundreds of men earning thelr living through the columns of our great papers, it 1s interesting to us, and particularly to those of us who are passing along, to know what becomes of them when they get along. Now and then you strike a happy-go-lucky fellow who doesn’t caro much whether school keeps or not, und whose life seems to be a perpetual holiday among his craft; but a5 a general thing life is hard, duty is ex- acting, and compensation issmall to the workers onthe press. Charley Webb, formerly of the Times, and since better known as “John Paul, of the Tribune, married money and went into Wall strect. George Alfred Townserd, whose work is as well known in the country as that of any other man, long since severed regular con nection with the press, and now devotes his time to universal correspondence and special articles, and lately has published a volume which Lam pleased to know 1s meeting with Becuntary success. Some of our old-time writers ave gone into book publishing, and one or two are in the street, but the rest—I don’t know and I fear that nobody cares. ——<—————— THEODORE THOMAS, Special Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune.
