AND THE RIGHT HAS PREVAILED. Special Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune: Aueusta, Me. Jan. 17%—The Fusion coutited-in Legislature, which for the past ten days has been burlesquing and enacting a gigantic farce, dissolved this day at high noon. . Its taking off” was as quiet and gentle as the snufting out of acandle. Those who shouted “Blood! blood!” the day previous- ly, and were ready to spill their last drop, were not présent to shed their first drop. Both branches on assembling wore a fune- real aspect,.as though there had been a death in the family. During the week two men had been rattling aroundi in the guberndtorial chair trying to persuade themselves that they had executive powers, while Gen. Chamber- lain held the reins of power with a firm grip, As the Fusion members gathered this morn- ing they were deeply absorbed in the reading of the Judges’. décision, and the counted-in ones soon cathe to the consciousness that they had about'as much: to’ do- in the® legislative halls ag any, other, outsider. - ‘There were A FEW PARTING worps,” - * ‘a dismal‘howl of fraud and corruption on the part of the Republicans, feats expressed that the people” are being robbed of their rights, ncommittee appointed to see what could be done about it, and an adjouriiment’ had to Monday afternoon. When that time comes- yery few will be found together, to hear the Committee’s report. : But the gathering of the Republican hosts this afternoon was a grand, inspiring sight No such interested and enthusiastic company had ever gathered within the halls of the. Capitol. Representative men from all parts of the State were there ~ -, ‘ IN LARGE NUMBERS, and, although the entrance of Blaine was thesignal of an “nproarious demonstration, the enthusiasm culminated when Governor- elect Davis came forward to take the quali- fying oath. It was the grandest ovation any man ever received in Maine. The Legislatare is now in working order, and all branches of the Government will soon be in full play. The: Fusionists have gone into their holes, and but a few disgruntled souls show their heads. It is believed that ‘the trouble’is over, though a good police “force will be keptat the Capitol: People feel “greatly relieved after the last week’s extreme excitement. . Republicans are elated at the great triumph, PLATNE. %o the Western Associated Press. Wsra, Me, Jan.'17.—Two hundred Bangur men:paid their respects to Senator Blaine. He extended congratulations at, the triumph of the law, and said that, in propor- tion to the victory they had won in behalf of “the right, they should now show their moder- ation, because we are right, and because we ‘believe in the majesty of the law. LFUN WITH S\0TH. Bosros, Jan. 17.—A special to the Herald from Augusta says when-the Bangor party returned to the Augusta House they found Maj. Smith, the Fusion Governor. A crowd sollected round him, and he was made the subject of some good-natured badgering, which he bore very pleasantly, though evi- lently annoyed. "He endured it about jifteen minutes and then walked away. A special: to: the same paper says the most -omplete arrangements were made- to insure che preservation of the peace to-day, and, although no show of military force was made near the: State-House, every infantry company in the State and every battery was in readiness at the armories during the day. in twenty minutes, the State-House would aave been invested with ‘troops, and a mob sssault, no matter how well planned or valiantly led, would have been disastrous to she movers. : SECRETARY SRO TEN: i estoy, Jan. 1i—A ‘ald Au pecial cabs ‘when Seoretary of State, ade vourne arrived at the State-House to take possession of his office he found the doors of he Secretary’s departments lock the fusion Secretary, on being applied to, de- ‘lined to deliver up the keys. Admittance was ined, however, ces other keys, ind it--was .soon .discovered that the sreat seal of the State had deen removed from its accustomed place. The taking up of passes at the outer doors’ was abandoned at the time, the police being” removed to the foot of the staircases and the doors of the two Houses, Just as the prayer wasended, | ‘ME. BLAINE CAME UPON THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE, and was received with the utmost enthusi- asm, men getting upon the chairs and desks,’ and waving their hats and handkerchiefs, while they rent the air with--cheers and shonts. Business was entirely’ suspended: fora few minutes, and it was some time be~ fore anything like order could be restored. Lot M. Morrill and Eugene Hale followed Mr. Blaine, and received a greeting | scarcely, Jess cordial. ‘The Republican members were all present," with'a few exceptions. Knowles, of Brad- ford, and Temple, of. Eddington, Fusion members, entered. and took: the seats they had occupied in the Fusion House, and were greeted with applause. The Reading of the House journal was’ concluded at 2:30 p. m. Smi Alonzo Garcelon, Bion Bradbury.. 378% ‘The remainder scattering for several candi- dates. No choice. The House then. proceeded to the selection of two names to be sent to the Senate, the whole roll being called and each member, as. his name was called, coming forward andde- positing his ballot. As Sproule, of Veazie, who had deserted the Fusionists, came for- ward, there was tremendous applause. He voted for Daniel F. Davis. The result of the balloting was: * ‘The.'names: of Daniel F. At 6:45 p. m. another Convention was formed. - The people had waited for this, nota man moving from the densely-packed. hall. A committee representing both branches waited upon Governor-elect Davis, and soon reported he would forthwith at- tend upon the Convention to take the oath of office. As he entered the. hall, attended by the Council and several distinguished gen- tlemen, the crowd arose as one man, and the air was rent with deafening applause, stead- ily increasing in volume until the Capitol building fairly rocked. Men jumped ‘upon the seats and upon each other’s shoulders, pounded with canes, and manifested their joy in ways indescribable, As Davis ‘stood at the right of the President and faced towards the people, the applause broke out again, and three cheers followed for Davis, for Blaine, for Boutelle, Chamberlain, Nash, ‘and Sproul. After quiet had been restored, Gov. Davis, in an impressive manner, took the oath of office and delivered his address. DAVIS’ INAUGURAL, Gov. Davis spoke as follows: GENTLEMEN oF THE SENATE AND House OF REPRESENTATIVES: For nearly sixty years you and your fathers have.assambled “to deliberate upon the wants of the Common- “wealth and enact its laws. In all these years _the safeguards thrown around representative government have proved strong enough to carry our good State in safety through every danger. Annually the persons elect- ed by. the people have been sum- moned by the proper authorities to meet and organize the Legislature, and those defeated bythe people have quietly submitted to the willof the majority...For the first time in our history this rule in the past has been reversed. Hence the unparal- Jeled excitement and. popular indignation, The organization of the Legislature has, for that reason, been delayed. , Under such circumstances you have shown great forbearance. You have kept strictly within the law. Coming from law-abiding communities you have waited until you could |. obtain the opinion of the Court. ‘That opin- ion has been rendered, and to-day you haye completed the organization of the Fifty- ninth Legislature. . Believing this solution of - the difficult problem is a striking fflustration . of the seen gh of republican government, where only the majority can rule, and that all good catizens will hail it.as such, i wilk only add that I shall take an early opportu- nity te to express to you my views upon State oe FOLLOWED THE ADDRESS, which did not subside until the Gubernato- Tial party took their departure. . ‘The Governor took possession of the Ex- ecutive Chamber without ‘any interference. 18 gray by by the | Fusionists during the day was the refusal of the Deputy Seoteiary of State to give up the gubernatorial returns, but the certified a coples of the clerks’ returns were substituted. At 7:45 both. branches of the Legislature adjourned until Monday at Ua. m. IN THE SENATE.
