Be had witnessed the admir- able management of Mrs.Johnson, and also that. of Warden Mills, and he thought if one had to go it would be better for the county to retaln the Matron and allow Mr, Mills tomaxe his exit It was best, anld Mr. Wheeler, after deliv ing an exhaustive discourse upon the relative executive merits of women and mien, that the resignation was accepted. ‘The matter was finally settied by_ accepting the resignation,—the yore being 7 to 5, The Commitleo on F'uance were Instructed to report at the next meeting tn reference to avom- munication of Couuty-Clerls Klokke, asking for an increnge in tho aslary of the Redemption lori. Adjourned until Monday at 2 o'clock. PEDESTRIANISM. TUB BUSINESS SQUELCHED. ‘The recent exposures by Tus Trisune of the business conducted in the beer-saloons with “pedestrian” attachments haye borne fruit and brought thu city oflicials to a realizing sensu of thelr duty, Yesterday the Superintendent of Police issued on order putting a stop to such exhibitions, and thus ono of the many attrac- tions to vica and crfmo has been wiped ont of existence. With a view tu ascertala whether or not the order was obeyed, a reporter mado tha rounds last night. He found but tivo offenders, one of whom broke up the show shortly after- wards, while the other can probably not be reached hy Supt. Seaver. . About halt-past 8° o'clock the saloon tn tho basement of No. 162 Dearborn street wos in full working order. It was announced that MMB, BROWN AND Mit, SOMEDODY On OTNER were walking, sho to male 400 to his 600 miles, Dereending the steps, the reporter found the inevitable tables, the usual smell of stale beer, and the ordinary demand for the fresh liquid, A hallgrown boy was “keeping the score," and Mme. Brown, In a blue tuule, bare arms, and blue tights, was leaning acainet a beer-kee, and deop in conversation with a would-be map about town dressed In a light overcoat. ‘The timekeeper proved to be a most encouraging speciinen of ignorance. Je dido’t know how many tniles the lady had walked, whether sho was to walk any more, or anything about [t. But ho had understood that the male competitor iad withdrawn,—some trouble about his pay,— and that the weman was colpg to walk tt out, Ho sald that It took forty lapsto make a mile, WO weuld probably bo wearer the truth, y- and-by Mme, Brown came out, tramped around the track halfadozen times or so, and then grocetnily yanished behind the curtains of an improvised dreasing-raom. Shortly thereafter the proprietor was told to stop; and now Mme. Brown fs out of an engagement. A TIP ALONG BTATE AND CLARK RTREETS showed not only thatthe order of the Superin- tendent was obeyed, but that the revelations in regurd tou the abominable charactor of the dens which Ine those thoroughfares had done pood, The Ivallan restaurants, beer-gardens, nud the like were deserted, ‘Thelr ordinary customers were scared off and: they did no business. At Jerry Monroe's “ Stuummor Garden? there were a coitnle of hundred men and women seated at the tables,—the mon mostly hard cases, with a eorinktiay of suckera,—the Women of the Stata street und Fourth avenue order. But two pa- Neemen stood at the door in such n position ag to be in plain view from nil parts of the ranche, and Jerry's customers acted very quictly, South of Harrison, on Clark street, TNE BOLE LAW-INEAKER was found, Maybe ho had not beon notified of the apasm of virtue which has struck the pollce officinis, but anyhow ff he had he pald uo at- tention tothe order. He wore a shuxgy coat and had a head Uke a buffalo, and he tramped around his little 24-fout ring with the ir ot a martyr, He was one of those patient animals known as a tmuke” or “ Jerusalem puny," — tu thegvernacular, a Juckass, ‘The poor Lease tramped around thu ring, & ltdicrous earlenture of bis human competiturs, and when the «music stepped he stopped too, His owner sald that “Juckass Rowell? was not inakiug any special number of quarter- iniles within any definite number of quarter- hours, and that when he got tired all ho had to do was to quit. ‘Ihe poor benst seemed well fed and contented cuough, and was perhaps the Jeast deoioralized animal m the whole show, in the Weat Division Capt. Mood gave the order to several saloun-kevpers along Madison nnd Halsted streets, und all of them promptly complica with the order, In consequence, the block on Mudison street between Clinton and Cunal, which Iso often in au uprear early fo the evenlng, Was ag quict ss achureh-yard. It seems. fs if the innumerable saloons in this block ure so badly located that thelr proprietors cannot make a living without resorting to some clap- trap acuieme for drawlag custom, IARRISON’S OFFICES. GURNEY ANEAD AGAIN, After a day in which ta rest, the place-hunters returned to thelr work yesterday with renewed cuergy. The weather, too, was favorable, and this, with the fact that ina few days at most the struggle woulkl be over, seemed tu inspira thei to work harder and hopo more fondly. With their activity came avy number of reports, which [ would be {dle to repeat In detall, but, aince some of thom wero apvarently well found: ed, they may not be entirely devoid of interest. One of these was In effect that Mnyes had drop- ped ont of consideration for Comptroller because of his record iu connection with the fssuance of the city serip when he held that oflce, and that (urney was aguin dn Mr, Harrison's favor for the positlun. "This is the causu being advertiecd, but it fanot believed in welldnformed suurces tu bo the seul cause, He wau first taken up, it hus been said, becnuse he was connected with certain secret soclety, und it ia known thot ho Was uppermost until the fact leaked out. When st did leak out Mr, Harrison was prevalied upon not tu appoint bln ff thls was the only reasou bu had tor [ty and at the ane the My Huves! friends caine forward and pushed hin, ‘The result of this was Mr, Gurney dropped back, wal yesterday It wos sult of Hurrison tuat te he did nut appoint him it would be bee ease ho belonged to the Order hu dhl, ete, ant all told thera wag trouble, He 13 reported to have ald toa friend that hts faterview fu his “organ,” wherein he substantially said he tad {olned the Order sfinply to liaye a loutiuyg-place, had already suflicientiy antagonized that Order, and that be could nut afford to do anything elso to incur tts disfavor without jeopardizing his future, witch his friends interpret to mean Uiat Gurney will bo the man if the best Mayor Citcage ever bad? 43 lett alone. Further than hla the Irish who hud been Klekloy ueuinet hi ou account of hia councetion with the Order in question were considerably moliitied, ono of then explalulug that the Jesh had po watipathy toward an American bolonghix to the Order, tut only to Irish Catholics, which lets Mr. Gurney in very nicely, gives the color of truth to tha re- port, and throws a shadow over the wsplrations of the other seckers after the position, ANOTHEI PACT OF BOMI INTEREST to the gaug fs the announcement that John Ff, Scanlan, if cared for at all, was to be cared for on account of hls ising rather than his Democ- racy. ‘The Grecnbackers, every one of whom fa wild for place, wero kicking” ‘hey say that Bcantan is not a representative Greonbacker, but has only acted with them to suit his con- venience. CORPORATION COUNSRI. Another thing out of the line of overy-day ra- port Was the creat activity noticed by somo on half of Doolittle, Jr, for Corporation Coitn= sel, and In this connection Miles Kehoe cot off a wood joke: but one must knor the men to np: preciate It thoroughly, He sald of the “young man.” In discussing hla merite and demerits, that his misfortune was that ho was overshad: owed by hie father’s ominence, and in the same strain Miles want on to say, with a smile in his evo but in a sympathetic tone, that a8 hie children grew up they would be confronted by the same misfortune, Thoss who beard him laughed, of courac, but it did not seem to have any effect on Doolittle's friends exvept to cause them to concede tint there was very little choice between bimaud Jamieson, But, otwithstand> ing the work for und talk about Doolittle, it Is believed that Jamteeon fs abead, THR ONLY REALLY NEW QUESTION RAISED, however, was {0 reference to what would bo- come of the Board of Education. “Mr. Harrison has repeutedly announced that one of the ab- jects sought =o by hfs Administration would be the killing of Republican- ism, and since the Yonrd fs Republican, and since ho has also§ expressed the desire that upon his entering office everybody holding a po- sition should resign, the matter is exciting somo attention, There are quite a number who would Hke the distinction of belng on the Board, and names aro being suggested, bur whether Mr. Harrison will insist on forcing politics Into the schools or not remalns to bo ascen. It is not belleved, howover, that any of the membors of tha Joard will resign, and those in the confidence of the Mayor think that he witl not Insist upon their resignations at once, no matter how strong tnay be his desire to surround himeolf with Democrats In avery department of the City Government, DUMMY RAILWAY. ‘THE TOWN OF CICERO, heretoforealmost inaccessible except by moans of the Northwestern Railroad, {s to hayo a dummy rallrond. Saturday an application will be made to tha Board of Trustees for a franchise, and as itis reported that none of the Trustees object to the scheme, whilo several are hearty advo- cates of ft, there seoma little reason to anticl- pate any opposition. A reporter yesterday met Mr._C. KR, Vandercrook, the projector of the road and gathered from him the facts in regard to it. Mr. Vandercook said that it was proposed to Intid the rond from West Forticth street on Randolph street west to Fifty-seeond, thence west. through private property to Willow aye- nue, vorth on that strect to Bennett strect, and weat on that thoroughfare to Park avenue, thence north to about Kinzie street, and from. that point west to the town Hmits, taking such streets tinmediately south of the Northwestern Railroad as proved best aulted to the purpose. Within a bricf period the streat-car tracks would bo extended west on Mudison atrect to the city-limits, and here conuections would ba made. He had recelyed assurances of support from the property-owners, and had acquired tho right of way through the property lying be- tween Filty-sccond street nnd Willow avenue, 80 thut he expected no difficulty. As to the rallrotd, {t would be about four miles in length, and would bo laid with twenty. ilye-pound T fron, and wetl bailasted. ‘There was no graaing to be done of any importance, and the cost of laying the track would not ex- eced 33,000 per nile. It would be operated hy dummics of the Philadelphia pattern, the cii- gine and passevger car being onc. The engines, of forty-tlve-horse power, would be of sufficient strength to bavl half-a-dozen additfonal car- rhages. Trips would be mado covery thirty min- utes from each end of the road, and he expected ta make the run at bigh speed, within ton min- utes for the full trip, stopping bo take up or det. down passengers at all poluts. Mr, Vundercook was anxious to have tt undor- stood thet there was no sell-out Intended, and that the enterprise was purely o business une. ‘The Northwestern Railroad and the landowners approved of it, belleving that It would enhance the value of Cleero property, Jt would give the people of Austin, Rideclind, and Oak Park great facllities for reaching the business-centro, at present denfed to them. ‘The faro would probably bo 5 ceuts for any distance, nnd trips would be made at intervals of balf au hour from a. m.to about lL p.m, The road was a private speculation of bis own, and he had secured sttticlent assistance fo war- rant hin ‘in suying that, if tho ordinance passed Saturday, the trackiwould be laid to Aus- tin, und trains running within ten days. It would be completed to the town limits as rop- lity as possibly, and would be run whether it paid at first or not, os ho felt confident ot ite ultimate success. Arrangements had been made for the iron, the dummy engines and cara, und other essentials, and the active co-operation of the citizens of Cicoro was looked for, SOUTHERN LABOR.
