The New Approach to the South Park— Building Permits, ‘There have been some important sales during the week. Prominent amongst these is the sale of what was at the time of its erection consid- ered THE HANDSOMEST HOUSE in Chicago,—the residence of Mr. Thompson on the northwest corner of Prairie avenue and Twentieth street. This property was bought by ‘Mr, Samuel W. Allerton for $115,000 cash. The land on which the house stands has a frontage of 192 feet on Prairie avenue. The house alone was currently reported to have cost $150,000. A.J. Averell, who negotiated the above sale, re- ports an agcregate of sales amounting to over $100,000. Besides the above, he has sold to C. R. Cummings. of Pekin, in this State, the premises No. 853 Indiana avenue, with 60 fect of ground, for $25,000 cash: 62 feet on Prairie avenue, west front, north of Twentieth street, to O. R. Weare, for $17,000 cash; and 5d fect on northeast corner Michigan avenue and Twenty-ninth street, for $10,000 cash. There is su active inquiry among resident and other capitslists for business property here, but ft is of a kind hard to mect. The property MOST IN REQUEST is stores worth $25,000 to $10,000. There are few of these in hands that wish to sell, and where such piperty is for. sale the owners are usually found too bigh in their ideas for the buyers. Snydacker & Co. have sold house and lot on Winchester avenue, near Oden avenue, for $1,000; and six acresatSouth Evanston for $240 per acre. ‘There has been a good deal of activity at the renting agencies. Leading brokers report the business of the season further advanced already than it was last year by the 20tn of April: Ten- ants have more decision this year than last. ‘They are more ready to stay where they are, and less disposed to look around for cheaper quar- ters. Thereisa BRISK DEMAND FOR STORES. especially in the retail centre. 1n favored local- ities, like that on State street, opposite the Singer—or, as it must now be called, the Field & Leiter—Building, there is an advan Ou Wa- bash avenue, in the distrist that will be left by the ereat dry-goods firm, rents are not so firm. Stores on’ State street, apposite the Field & Leiter Buildiug, are renting for 33.000 to $4,200 year. At the corner of Madison and Wabash avenue a store is worth $6,000 a year, and on Madison, between State and Wa- ash, $2,700. The Bestar and basemeat builaing, adjoiame Field & Leiter’s wholesale store, 2/1 and 243 East Madison street, has been leased for two years for $1S,000; the upper floors of 192 and 1% State street, huve been rented for $4,500 for three vears; the store and_ basement, 76 State, have been rented for one’ year for $3,000; and the store and basement 254 Evst Madison street bas been rented for $1,800 a vear, and the upver floors of 218 and 258 East Monroe street, 50x160, for $S00 a year. Offices are also reported to rent readily, and st as food pricesas last year, with an advance in the most desirable quarters. Otfices on LaSalic street, between Wasuinston and Monroe, rent for from $1,200 to $3,000 2 year, if they are on the main floor. Above zhis, the rents go down as the tenants go up. Rouses are in good demand in all divisions of. the city. The North Side kaving fewer houses, ‘there is less done there than in. other divisions of the city. THE INQUIRY FOR HOUSES is such that the proprictor of five new houses at the corner of Pine and Illinois received 200 ap- plications for them. Houses on Michivan av- enue are in request. Of the new houses at the corner of Michigan avenue and Congress street, ‘one of the inside ones has been rented at $1,000 8 year, and the corner one at $1,200 a year. The Walker Slips, south of Blue Island ave- nue, ou the river, are being rapidly taken up by Jumper firms, The Archer Refinery, engaged in the manufac- ture of sirups, starch, and glucose from coro,” las removed from Milwaukee to this city, to fet the advantage of the superior transporta- lion facilities at this point. It bas secured uarters on Archer ayenue, at the corner of Wallace street. APPROACHES TO THE SOUTH PARK. To the Editor of The Tribune. Cuicaco, March 28.—I was very glad tosee in your paper of a week ago that the opposition, originating among the property-owners along Jlue Island avenue, to placiuy Michiean avenue under the control of the South Park Commis- sioners, bad been withdrawn. There was, it seems, no real opnosition to the Michigan ave- nue scheme. The objectors simply meant to force the . Park Commissioners to acquire the balance of the lands along Bluc dsland avenue, so that the boulevard of which it forms a part could be completed, aud that they thus might realize some return in the in- creased value of their adjacent property for the MONEY THEY HAVE BEEN PAYING - to the Park Commissioners for the last half dozen years. Now thatthe Commissioners have ucquired the lands, and all objections have bcen withdrawn, why has. not the Michizan-Aveore Dill been promptly passed? Wilt not our Hon. Moses Wentworth’ and other Rep- resentatives attend to this matter at once? There is not to-day what would yass for a decent country road to the South Park, and yet the city has expended millions of money in acquiring the lands und beautifying them for park purposes. 1t will be a monstrous outrage on the part of our Senators and Repre- seucatives in Springfield if a measure, for which our people are pow unanimous, should be suf- fered to fail by aefault. Surely the country members will assent to its passage at once, if the Chicago delegation will only move in the matter. Gentlemen legislators, Chicago ex- pects you to do your duty, and make that move without further delay. Souta Pars. . There were fifty-seven BUILDING PERMITS issued during the week. The important ones were those to E. J. Lehman, ‘store on Adams street, near State, to cost $1,500; John Wheeler, three-story and basement awelliiy at 4S7 Indi- ana street, to cost $3,500; Connecticut Mutual 1.ife-Insurance Company, sixth story ou Honore Block, to cost $62,000; James S. Kirk & Co., five-story warchouse on North Water street, near Pine, to cost $25,000; H. V. Packard, wvo- story dwelling at 1192 Michizan avenue, to cost $4,000; Chicago City Railroad Company, addi- lion to barns on Cottage Grove avenue, near Thirty-eighth street, to cost $3,000; James N. Wulker, addition to S70 Prairie avenue, to cost $3,000;" Peter.
