Both buildings were soon burned. THE S3CENE WAS A GRAND ONE. The wind was blowing thirty miles an hour, and sparks and embers were flying fn every rection. Across the street from the Ocean stood Congress Hall, with its 700 feet of sea front- age. It bad accommodations for 600 or 700 guests. The “beat was intense. The firemen did their utmost, but their. efforts were futiie, and the great building was destroyed. Nov. 9.—The worst fire that ever visited this city was discovered this morning at 7 o'clock in the attic of the Ocean House, on Perry street, below Washington, the new wing of the Centre Hoase {ntervening between the Ocean House, and Wasbington street, the main thorouzhfare of Cape May. The fire was _evidently the “work of an fo- cendiary, as there had been no fire in the Ucean Housc. since «the close of the season. A police officer gave the alard® and the Fire Department of the city, consisting of truck, one band engine, aud a pumber of chemical engines responded promptly, but it was soon toaud they could do fittle toward sub- duing the flames. No one had baen in the Ocean House for several days. For the past two seasons the house was run by S. R.' Lualam, who, about fifteen minutes before the fire was discovered, left for Phila~ delphia. . Soon aiter the main. wing of Congress Hall, on Washington street, caught. The fire theu extendea to the Centre House, at erry, Washinston, and Jack~ son streets, whence the fames communicated ta the old wing of the Ocean House on Perry strest, aud at the same time reached Ceutre House Cottage a0d communicated to Peterson’s cot- taze on Jucksou street. Now the Merchants’ Hotel, alreadv on fire, but kept under control, burst into flames, which made their way down to the beach. It Jooked ay if the whole city was doomed. The fire swept along to Finlon’s ** Cottage by the Sea,” on Jackson street. Charles Suelke’s Centennial House was next burned to the ground, and Mrs. Miller's cottaize on Jackson strect followed. Tben the faines, now raging furfously, . REACHED THE OLD ATLANTIC HOUSE, and shot across Juckson street to Georze Hille worth's cottace, which fell a victim, together with the Cahill cottaze. The Knickerbocker House was then attacked, and soon after Willtam E. Kiog’s hot-bath establishment was included in the general destruction. George Fryer's cottace, standing alone on the blafl below the Ocean House, was enveloperd by flames aod burned. Then came the Avenue House, kept by Georze T. Daugherty, the property of the Burn’s estate, at the foot: of “Perry street. This was followed by 8. A. Rag- dolpli’s cottage on Jackson street. ‘While the fire was at its height, sbout noon, and after the Avenue House had causht fire, a steam-engine from Camden arrived, and in this direction the fire was checked. The flames then attacked two cottages of Alex McConnell, and that of Rudolph, but they were KNOT SERIOUSLY DAMAGED. ‘Back of Cahill’s cottage on Decatur street wers Judze Hamburger’s cottage and three of W.
