Louis, Oct. 23.—The sensation in business clreles over the fatlure of Doad, Brown & Co., drygoods merchants, has coutinned during the day. Although nothing definite could be learncd concerning tho yparticulars of the embarrass- ment or the amount involved, the fallure to make collections in the Boathwest seemed to be the main cause. The yellow fever had also largely Interfered with their collections, The firm, sloce tho retirement of the Fiske capital, had beea heavily backed by H. B. Claflla & Co., ond they are creditors for over $100,000. It fs also rumiored that' Mr, Randall, father of the lady who married Commodore Garrison 8 Weck or 50 ago, nfter bis daughter’s martiage withdrew some mooey be had fnvested fn the firm. Al these things cominz together caused tho crash. Your correspondent called on Mr, Dodd thfs afterncon for a siatement. The mag. nificent establishment was still open to the pub- 1le, and business was golug on as usual, although an acute ohserver could note un air of listicss. uces in the clerks. Here and there they wers standing In groups, snd @ state of anxiety wus the prevailing cliaractenatic in thelr actfous. Mr. Dodd sald that ke would make no state- ment for a week or ten days at the least. The figurca teceived from New York by the Associatcd Press as to the chief creditors, he would say nothing about. He was uegutint- Ing with the creditors, and be belleved the sus- pension would be only temporary, and that the firm would continue its business, At any rate, the bouse would for the present go on with its affairs as usual. Within a week he would be {n 8 porltion to make an authoritative statement. Accountants were now busily cngaged on the books of the firm, and, as soon asa thorough {uvestigution was made, future plans would Le determined. It secins to be the better opinfun in 8t. Louls that the house will not be able to tide over the difficulties. It has been altogethur too liberal and wild in extendivg credit, and huy acquired {n this way a certaln class of custumers not entirely desiruble. The further existence of the firm seems to depend on fts abllity to meky collections in certan localities, a cousiunmation that does nut under the present circumetances promise faltillment. Lo the Western Amoeiated Press, 8r. Louss, Mo., Oct, 23.—)ir. Brown, of Dodd, Brown & Cu,, arrived to-day, but nmfilnz of a positiva nature regarding the condition of the firm s yet ready for the public, nor will there be anything till an gecount of stock is taken, avd a balance-sheet indle up, which witl require about. a week’s time. A number of houges i the clty in the same line of busiuess bave offered ns- sistance to the firm, and from the general kindly fecling on the part of the Eastern, and, in tact, all creditore, it is belleved the bouse will be able to fully resume businesa {u a very shiort time, and there will be no oveasion for the appolutment of an Assiznce, BALTIMORE. BavTinore, Md., Oct. 23.—The banking-hiouse of Clabaugh, Nelson & Co. has suspended, and the irm hos ade an ‘assignicat to J, Alex- ander Preston for the benefit of fts creditors, The cause of the faiture Is attributed to losses of tho senfor partner, Mr. W. H. Clabaugh, in tle 8t.
