The room was pretty well crowded with police- officers, curlous outsiders, and the swarm of relatives and friends of the deceased, {ncluding his wite, who was in mourning, and his father, who kept near the Coroner, and who now and then had a question to suggost. City Attorney Tuthill was present as the city’s representative, and virtually looked ofter the fntercsts of its scrvant, OfMcer Jones, occasfonally suggest- {og to the Coroner a lina of (noquiry which was forthwith followed up, . Witness sald to his companion, ** That's O'Brien.” They had been tolking about him for some time, there having bieen o good deal of steating donu of late, and the work louking like his. When they got to the station, witness added, the prisoner nlght sond for his fother I he chose, O'Bricn sald ho thought this was hard, and the witncss sald he was gorry he coutdn't thint to do it was more than his sltnation wan warth, O'Brien then walked along quictly until they got within about thirty feet of Buatterfield street and Archer avenug,—a walk of about three blocks,—one officer watking on each side of him, and ‘the witness holding him by the gleeve. O'Bricn atdn't stop, however, and was galnine on his oursuer, who fired auvother shot at him just s he was Jumping up on the side- walk on tho other side of the strect. Witness couldn’t swear that O'Brien pulled a revolver, and nune was found on him, ‘the shota were fired merely Lo scare bim. Had he got in_between {wo hbuses, near where he fell, ho would have gone in behind a lot of shantles, and the officers couldn’t have got him azain, All this time both officers thought ha was fooling. They picked Wim up, and ha walked ‘well enough to Arnold streat, from which point they had to carry him to the sta- tion. ~When near there, witness called to Otllcer Leouard to run and get a doctor. Before the physiclan came, tho' officers examined him snd found be had been shot In the back., At O'Brien’s request a priest was went for. There hnd been no persuading, and no need of anv, her statcments being tho same that ehe had made from the first, The Coroner shut off the talk and announced that, in order to mako it satiafactory all around, the inquest would bo adjourned uniil this morn- ng at 10 o'clock. ‘The reporter was told at the statfon thst the woman_was aporonclied by O'Brien, In the sta- tlon and labored with to some extent for tho purpose of getting her to teat!fv as had the lnst fow witucsses on the stand. She stoutly main- tained that to so test!fy would be to swear to what was false, aud she went to Offleer Jones, told him what had occurred, and was questlioned by Mr. Tuthill, who scertained that lier testi- mony would fally corroborato that of the offi- cers and the fittle boy.
