To the Editor of The Tribune. " ° CmcAGo, Aug. 24.—Some years azo Dr. Cone stantine Heriog published a paper on Yellow- Fever, in which he advocates strongly theuseof charcoal as a disinfectant for this disease. - He says that every substance which is intended to destroy.another, must, have some chemical affiu- ity for it. ‘That chloride of lime, which destroys - certain entircly different miastas, sulphar, which bas a powerfil effect on cholera poison, bas no power whatever in this fever. He urges strongly the necessity of - scattering’ the peopla ioorderto breskup the central poiut of the disease,—{rom which it always spreads. He has observed and proved for | himself the truth of what he asserts, that a few buckets of - charcoal thrown into the bilge water of a ship, repeated until the foul odor is wone, will surely disinfect it. That the charcoal should be kept in every sick room and put by handsfal on all suspicions utensils; on_everything which paises trom a yellow fever patient, woat he vomuts. etc., be- 1ore they are carried away; -upon thesheets and clothing before they are washed. That if this were done iz every case, washervomenand serv- ants g WOULD ‘NOT DIE OF THE DISEASE as they have done even in Philadelpbia in '58. He also would give a8 a positive command that all corpses should be covercd with charcoal. He found by comparing tne maps of the towns, and the local history of the epidemic, that the course. of the fever was often against the prevalllor winds, but always in the direction of the burial grounds, and . principally along the streets through which the dead were carried. The fever followed the dead. He says, furtber, that it happens not accident- ally; that what is the true chemical actidote is also the best preventive and antidote if taken internally. The * chemical is analogous to the a that in nospitals aud private rooms the vxcuse is made that it is impossible to cleanse the dotll:inz, etc., from the black particles of char- coall” - ‘The Doctor differs somewhat from the report. of the physicians you publish in to-day’s paper. They say that the” poison {s mot gascous. Dr. Bering says that it is zaseous, but acts ouly in a state of condensation. Will not some phyaician teil us whether this has been tried? If it bas been tried, ondoubt- edly it has been found wanting, for Lhave Ilvoked in vain in all the allusions made to tac recent outeresk of the fever for some noties of Dr. H.'s remed; A 2 e —————— CANADA.
