When the case of Joseph Crawford, charged with the murder of Willlam Shanleg, an old, serpectable, and {noffensive citizen one night §n July, 1877, was called yesterday morufng in thie Criminal Court, Mr. Van Buren, of counsel for the prisoner, stated to the Court that he had st Jearned of the Intentlon of the State's ‘Attorney to proceed to trinl under 8 new indfet- ment. Al the preparation for tho defense had been mada on tha understanding that the trial was to proceed under the old Indictinent against (Gannon, Boyle, Morton,and the prisoner Joint 15 A trinl was had on that fndictmont In the cnge of (fannon, and the Jury gisagrecd, It was now the State’s Attorney's {ntentton to use this man Gannon as a withess on the trial of the prisoner under a new fndlct- ment aizainst the latter nlone. Mr. Van Buren sald he had just been Informed that other wit- pesses wers to be produced. While he was prepared to go to trial undor the old Indlctment, he was not ready under the new.
