He denonnced Spofford as he- Ing oversthing that was bad, and sald he wasthe only dishonest man in the Board,—n rattlesnake upon whose head urcryhmll‘y ought to trample. Mr. Bpoflord said he could stand any amount of abuse from such a low, vile, and ignorant source, Tlo remembered that throughout last year Fitzeerald had denounced all of the old crowd as thieves,—the very men ho was now af- filtating wjth and backingln Sufquitous achemos, Thelr schemes of a year ago, when Fitzgornid knew thom only as thieves, pated into {nsignfl- cance when compared with tho schemes of to- day, and Lo was the last man In the world 1o Eulo about honesty, for he evidently did not now the meaning of the word. The speaker was willing to be jude -1 by his acts, and to lot Fitzgerald's political Ii.cnda—the men who had elected him—be the judges. They wera coming 10 him every diy and denouncing Fitzgerald in unmeasured terms, aod therocould not pussibl; be any denunclations moro bitter. Iic hai nothing but facts to deal with, and he wanted his assaflants to understand onco and for all that ha was ever prepared to mect thelr attacks and would ask no quarter, Mr. Burling safd he wanted no part in the persbnal controversy, but he was satisfied that the Board by its action was heaping wrath on its own head, Tho bids belongod to the Com- mitiec on Public Bervice, and he had no sym- pathy with what had been done. He closed by mfmng that Mr. Senoe bo added to the Com- ttee, Mr, Fitzgerald again came to tho front, o was oppoeed to Mr. Senne being added to the Committee, and all that could bo made out of his opnosition was that he was afrald Benne would bo in the way of cortain bargains and salea with contractors, and might exvoso the Inwardnesa of thocontemplated {obs {n furnish- Ing the county's supplics. Ko moved the tabling of the motfon, and his motion provailed by the following vote: Yeas—Cleary, Conly, Fitzgerald, Hoffmann, Lenzen, Meyer, Malloy, Tabor, Seone—0. Nays—Ayars, Doese, Bradloy, Burling, Spaf- ford, Whetler—8, . DIETING PRISONERS. A communication was then read from Sherift Kern protesting against the nction of tho Board in reducing his por diem for dieting prisoncrs, and asking that tho subject bo recousidered. He sct forth that tho Board had no right to chatgo the price, becauss he had a contract with the nnuut{. and had contracted with deal. ers to supply lim provisions, cte,, which ex- tended through his term of office, and, further- more, that ho could not fedd tho prisoners for cents. B Mr, Fltzgerald moved that the communica- tion be referred to the Committes on Jall and Jail Accounts, and the motion prevafled, o tlmn procecded to ?lp“k on the dieting ques- lon, and to framo a flimsy excuso for reinsiat- ing the old price for dictfng. Mo sald he had been complimented by the Emu for votlng to reduce, aud that in so yoting hehnd endeavored to bs conslstent, for whea he first came Into the Board he tried to reduce the allowance to 20 cents. Bince voling, howsver, he ad talked to attorneys on tho subject and found that the Board could not in law change the price. The County Attorney had told him it was {llega), ete. ie Attornoy denles this.| Ho did nof want to do an filegal act, and thought tho best thing would bp to rcconsider the actlon of the Board on tho lnb]cttllnd rofer the whole matter to the County.Attorney. If it was found that the Board could reduce the allow- ance, 1t could be done. g Mr. Burling eaw no reason why a reconsidera- tion should be bad. If tbe Blhicrill wns entitled to 85 conts, the Board could not keep him out of It, It would be time enough to reconslder the subject whon lcgal advice was hind. Mr. Bpofford was opposed Iarocnmlderlnfi. ‘The allowance of 25 cents was very liberal, and, if the law compelled tho allowanco of a greater sum, the allowsuce could be made ot sy tima, He wanted the power of tho Board In tho mal- ter settiod firat, nd if 1t waa found that it had excecdod its suthority, the trouble could bo remedicd, A delay of o few days could do no rm, Mr. Fitzgerald wanted the reconsideration nt once, and moved it. The motion prevatled by the following vote: Year—Dradley, Cleary, Conly, Pitzgerald, Mofl- mann, Lenzen, Matloy, Tabor=8, Nays—Ayars, Doeso, Burling, Moyer, Spofford, Wheeler, Senno—7, Mr. Burling offercd a resolution providing for cutting off Bexton's §3 por thousand cxtra for brick used in the Court-House, and it was lald over under tho rules, ‘The Committes on Pabllc Bervico reported fixing tho poliing places for the town election in tho several towns. No Important changes were recommended, and the report was adopted. Mr. Bradley moved that tho Board throw its proteeting orm around the employes at the Insanc Asylum and Poor-Houso, pending the coming juvestigation there, to [naurc thelr tes- ll({lnu;wllhmn fear of belug discharged. he motion elicitod considerable dlncuulon.' and was adopied, 80 witnesses can unbosom themselves freely when called upon, On mqtion of Mr. Burling, tho Investimating Commll.?!n waa empowered to employ a sliort- band _reporter to take the evidence, and tho Board adjourned until Monday.
