The Turks Claim to Have Gained an Advantage at Schinka Pass, GRAVITZA,. CONCERNING THIN GREAT REDOUBT, (By Cable to The Chteago Tribune. } Loxpox Orricz or Tux Cuicaco Tanuxe, 6 Pavonave Prace, Srnanp, Sept. 15—4 a. m.—Since’ the first three days’ cannonading, tho fight at Plovna scems to have been of tho simplest character, displaying little tactical ability in the plan of attack. The capture of Gravitza is of extreme. impor- tance. Tho road leading from Plevnn towards the west separates into three branches abont three miles from the town, near tho Village of Radichovo, Tho northern branch runs to Sistova, and forms the line of communica- tion of the Russian army with ita bridgos cross the Danube. The sonthern branch is the route to Tirnova. In the fork made by the dividing ronds, and abont u mile weat of their point of junction, lies the Village of Gravitza, To ‘the westward of this village, and on rising ground above, it was, at tho beginning of tho bombardment, es- tablished the principal Russian battery of heavy artillery, armed with twelvo pleces of ordnance, the Village of Radichovo there was also o slege battery, in which eight guns were mounted, and in the darkuesa of the night of the 9th’ another battery was planted near this hamlet, which opened fire on the third day of the bombardment. Be- tween the road leading from Plevna to Sin. tova and that leading to Nikopolis there is a high snddlo-backod ridgo, which drops into the plain on tho west towards tho Village of Verbitza, ond fallzg on the east into tho. valley towards Plevna at a distanco of about two miles from town, On this ridge, at the extremity of ita summit towards Verbitza, was situated the great redoubt of Gravitza, which foiled Schakoffeky in hia at- tack in July, but now is reported to have been occupied by six Russian and one Ron- manian battalions that assaulted it under Rodenoff Tuesday ovoning. This redoubt had been, since Friday morning, exposed to a terrible fire. On one side it was bombarded with the eight siege-gunsin tho right flank of tho battery above Gravitza, and on tho other sido it was exposed to the shells of the greater portion of the Ronmanian artil- lery, which assailed it from the direction of Bivolar, while sovoral Russisn feld-batteries on the elopo towards Verbitza poured their projectiler into its ombrazures, COMMENT, THE SITUATION 48 OBSERVED IN LONDON, (Uy Cable to The Chicago Tribune.) Loxpon Orricr or Taz Cmcaco Tamune, G Paranave Prace, Srnanp, Sept. 15—4 a m,—Operations before Plevna, Tuesday, have left the Russian army in the position of besiegers. .The line of outer defense has beon broken, bat the greater part stands, while the Inner circle remains untouched still in advance of thesiege batterics which have been established. A sensible advantage has been gained. Tho three redoubta which Skobeloif captured Tuesday, lying as they do near the Ottoman line of communication with Sofia, would prove of immense importance if the policy were adopted of closing the road to that town against the Turkish convoy, Asa means of penetrating Ployna their possession has also much importance. ‘THERE ARB OTHERS, } however, quite as strong, between them and the town, This, however, is no more than might be affirmed of every advance that is possible at Plevna. Under present condi- tions tho place cannot be carried by a coup de' main, A’ Russian battalion, ascending 8 slope before a redoubt, is exposed alithe way from its cover—ssy for half or a quarter of a mile—to a terrible Gre from the rides of the Tarks, who were invinsible, and if the latter were good marksmen not a man out of a corps would resch the shelter of tho trenches of tho cnemy, Such attacks as that made on the redoubt south of Plevna Satur- ay SIMPLY CONSUME THE BUMIAN LFAXTRY without any compensation. The Russian commander will have to call upon his feld artillery for moro efficient service in theso advances, At present the Grand e On a height in the rear of if PRICE FIV! 2 ENTS. Duke's force hast st superiority in this arm, of 3 h no adequate use is made, TheS:% . Gravitzs redoubt does not give entir sag to Plevna, and it is'very likely true that there are many re+ doubts between it and Plevna, Yet if this powerful work has been taken the capturo ofamaller ones must be more proba Ue. All that can be claimed for Russian operations on Tuesday last is that they havo doné much to enable the Russians by combined advances to make Osman Pasha’s position untenable, Now, however, that so much has been done to give Russian operations so much of the character of a siege, care ought to be taken TO COMMAND THE TURKISH LIMES OF RETAEAT, ‘The object of this immonso Russian array ought surely not to bo merely to drive tho Turkish army out of one atrong place, leaving it at liberty to retire to another. ‘Tha fear of provoking tho fanaticism of tho enemy by driving him to bay cannot fora moment be allowed a place in Russian cal- culations, It would bo » most melancholy termination of this sangninary atruggle, if the Grand Duke Nicholas had to announco some morning that tho Turks had retired in the night, Rather, the aim of the Russian commander should be to draw a closer gir- dle of fire until the Tarks find it impossible to live under it; and equally impossible to got out. PLEVNA. WORK YET TO DE DONE. Loxpon, Sept. 14.—The experlenced military correspondents of the Zimes and Laily News, after witnessing the attack Tuesday, arrive at the same coucluston, viz.: That Plevna must be taken by gradual approaches, The former cor- respondent writing from the Ruastan head- quarters under date of Wednesday morning, appears to have been still unaware of any de- cided Russian successes, for he says tho Em- perorand Grand Duke Nicholas were on the battle-fleld uutil® last night. The Emperor returned to headquarters here at Poredin last night. ‘TUE DATILE-FIELD ofthe last five days is silent this morning. There fs talk of submitting the Turkish pual- Won tos regular atege, and sapping up tothe redoubts, while a close blockade {s belng instl- tuted, with Intent to starve Osman Pasha's forces. The villages fuciosed within Osman Pashao’s Hues are full of supplies for the almpls wants of the Turkish soldiers, and the ficlds groan with heavy crups of maize. ‘TUE LOSSES a this morning are spoken of here as about 5,000 to 6,000, but there are no detatls. The Empe-' ror this morniug has gone back to the battlo-’ field to visit bis soldiers. Unicss tois position of affairs ts shortly changed by a decided Rassian success, the event’ of the campalgn will turn on the movementa of Mchemet Alland Suleiman Pasha, rather than on the fate of Plevna; but information concern- jug these is of the most meager description. A telegram from Shumla, Sept. 11, shows that Mebemet Ali's central coluinn {a still at Kazees yoy, Mehemet All bimself had goue towards Eski-Juma, and may be working westward to compel the Russians to abandon Tirnova aud the Balkans. RAASSURING. A telegrain from Constantinopie dated yes terday says: * Reassuriog dispatches have beep. recelved from Ostnan Pasha.'" > BOMBARDMENT. Lonpoy, Sept. 14.—A dispatch dated Buchar est Friday nuon says: Since the capture uf the Grivica. redoubt before Plevna there has been ouly a continued bombardment of the town and other positions of the Turks. ANOTUEL ASSAULT. Preparations aru making for another assault. WOUNDED. There ts an immense number of wounded, and but few surgeons, OFYICIAL BULLETIN, Loxpon, Sept. 14.—The Russian official byle Jetin, dated Voredin, 1th, says: Yesterday (Wednesday) we made no further attacks, but bombarded the Turkish furtifivations and Town of Fleyna at short range. Towards 4 p. m. tho town began to burn, and two explosions were observed within the fortitications. Thu Turks ade little reply to our fire, aud directed all their efforts against our lett wing, which threat- ened thelr rear. At thls puint Gen, Skubeloff MEPULSED FIVE FUIOUS ATTACKS, but was compelled In the evening, after the alxth attack, to evacuate the fortifications which ‘Ue captured Tuesday. During Wednesday night our troops fotreuched themselves fa their posl- ons. Frum the beginuing of the battle uptoL ofclovk Wednesday afternoon 6,000 wounded havo been brought to the field hospital, There bave been no collisions at other pointa of the theatre of war, The Rustchuk column is concentrated in fresh poeate half a day's march behind the Kara . ANOTHER ACCOUNT, Virnxa, Sept. 1.—A correspondent before: Plevna telegraphs: At tuetakiug of the Grivica redoubt the Turks neither ran away nor asked quarter, The fret Russian who eutered thought. the redoubt was abandonod, but the garrison had oly retired to the casemates aud yailerica, where they stood at bay, The ‘Turks fumedi- ately tried to rotuko the reduubt, and poured 8 large number of men into the adjacent In- troncumonts. The Russians bombarded them, but SUVPEUED SEVERELY from the rifle tire ut ouly 20U yands' distance. This attempt to retake thy redoubt and another desperate one on Wedacsday were repulsed. This correspondent, who 1s apparently un~ aware of the recapture of tho other redoubts frum Gen. Skobeluif, estimates that the Rus siaug up to Thursday Jost 7,0u0 killed and wounded, and the Roumantana, 3,000, VICTUALED YOU TWO MONTUS. SCHIPICA, 4 VILLAOM CAPTURED, Loxpoy, Sept, 14.—At Constantinople, on ‘Thursday, the War five issued s telegram from, Suleiman Pasha, dated Sept. 10, reporting thut ou the previous day a reconnoiteriny party from the Village of Schipka pushed through the Balkans to the rear of the Russian position and cavtured a village held bya small Russian force, tea wiles from Gabrova. * | OM TUB CONTRARY, On the other hand, a spoiul, dated Schipka, Bept. 19, says: “All was quiet there; nothiog whatever is doing.
