THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: FRIDAY, AUGUST, 1877. q The City Does Not Intend to Have Any Court-fouse Dome. Ald. Gilbert Wants Work Begun on the City-Hall at Once. Another Ineffectual Effort, to Dispose of the Gas Question. “Aldermen Who Will Recommend Their Friends for Offices, A special meeting of the City Council was held Just evening, Ald, Cook presiding. COUNT-HOUSE DOME. Ald, Ballard offered the following: Wrenzan, The County of cook, by order of Cook County Commirntoners, [eat this tine build- fnga Court-Honse on the east hall of Block 38, known sathe ‘Public Sanne,” for the ue of tho yarlous courts of snid county, and for the various offices of sald county; and Wneneas, The City of ies contemplates at some future time busiding acity-Hallon tha weet half of Block 3H, and kownaasthe **Pablic Square;* and Whensas, Thero has been prepared an exterior derign and plan for the entire two buildings, (he counly portion of which ts Ueing now erected, ace cording to said exterior design and plan} and Wuensas, The said deeign and plan represents that in the centre of said Block 38 there ts to be erected one-half on the county portion and ono- half on the city's portion a dome of pon- uerous | dimensions and of enormous = ex- pense, the foundations of which naciess monument egin at or beluw any other foundations of eaid buildings, and which will cost the tmmense eum of ae half of three-quarters of 3 million of dollars of hard-earned taxer, and when done can only he seen by the ohverver's petting Immediately be- tween the two huildings. ALD, DALLARD aatd that this dome could never be seen unlces a. person was out on the take or down at River- elde, or unless he got right in between the two buildings, when he would look up and sec $1,000,000 thrown away. Ile was opposed to this dome, moreover, because ft would settle the corners of tho building, The architect himself had admitted that the dome cont be dispensed with without marring the effect of the bullding, The Alderman was in favor of building the City-Hall, but thought the city wanted to agree on a destin first, and that it did not want to enter into thisdome businces, Ald. Cullerton sald there was a contract en- tered into by tho elty and county in 1872, pro- viding for dutiormity in the exterior plans of the tio portlons, and he was of the opinion thit it contemplated a dome, or at least a portion of a dome He wns in favor of The resolution, provided, however, the city was nut in such a position that {¢ could not ry well ket out of it at the present tne. Under the clreumstances, he would, prefer that. the resolution go toa commitice to report at the next ieee Ald. White didwt geo what objection Ald. Hallard conld have to letting tho county build the eity’s dome for It. Ald. Ballard—Becauge the aty would have to pay for it, Ald. Thompson sald the resolution would have the effect of notilying the county that the city would not joln [tin tho building of a dome. It would be the meuns of saving the clty’s rights fn the matter, and hy should favor its adoption. ALD, CULLERTON sald that It was probable that the Council would eb a report next Monday night from the Mayor as to the condition of all existing arrangements in regard to the building of a Clty-Hall, De would, therofore, move to postpone the mattor femporarilys with tho iden of tuking action upon dt under the ight shed on the subject by the Mayoe’s report. a ‘The motion was lost. : The resolution vas then adopted by the fol- Jowlng vote: Yeaa—ScAuloy, Rosenberg, Ballard, Thompeon: (Third), Stewart, Gilbert, Tully," Cullorton, Huldlor, Throop, Cook, Rawlelgh, Seaton, Thomp= ron (Thirteontn), Baumgurten, Waldo, Nicsen, Linseabarth, Schwelsthal, Jannsens, Kirk—21, Naye—Sommer, Korber, Oliver, White, MeNar- Boy, Ityan, Sweency—7. He was satistied that the elty woul! have to pay $3 per 1,000 fect until it did settle this matter. It would never get gas any cheaper. Asit was, Chicago was getting its gas cheaper than any other city in the country, If the Council determined to net. tle up with the West Side Gos Company, the difference in tha acttlement would be £40,000 or $50,000, which could be saved by ndontine his order, This would settle the matter up to Muy, 7 On motion of Ald. From Our Oun Correspondent. New York, Aug. 6.—~There {fs ono way, and but ong, in which the rule of Tammany in this city can be overthrown. That way is for tho Republicans to join with the antl-Tammany Democrats and the antl-Tammanyites of what- ever faction {none grand asaoult. This has long been recognized aa the fact, but something has always occurred to elther prevent a coalition of the opposing forces, or to break up such conll- tlon vs had been effected. Last fall, when An- drew II, Green becamo an fndependent candl- date for Mayor, there was an alarming deter- mination manifested to throw Jolin Kelly out of power. But the national question prevailed, and nothing vlso could have been expected but a withdrawal of local lasucs in such an excit- {ng hour of larger things. Thero was cnough of a display made, however, to show con- clusively that the way of Tammany, Ike that the tranegressor generally, was to be made hard, The Republicans did ‘not make Andrew HL Green thelr candidate because they were in fear of being sold out by men whom Mr, Green contd uot himself control, Thechose the kopo- Jess chance, and Gen, Dix consented to become the victim for the city, as ex-Goy, Morgan proved to be for the State. This was pcrhups tho wise move in tho circumnatances, Now that the cireumstances have changed. tho move which will moat wisely meet the present local situation fs the subject under conatdcration by the politicians of all parties, Tho anti-Towi- inany Democrats have made nouncertalu sound, While their platiorm fs the selection and clee- Uon of honest and capable men to-conduct the munielpal government, they may be relled onto fail to find either this honest y or ability in the men whont itaminaniy wil nominate, Their platform woulda be ‘quite og honestty stated tn the single plank, “Anything to beat Tammany,” The Tonportatice of this fuctlon Is yasthy ine creased by the latedeelsion of Mr, Morrissey to Jend hie big hand in the gamo of * making it hot" tor Kelly, If thero fa any man the ruling Jobn, Irishinan, is afraid of, It is the other John, Irishman, The other Jolin certalnly tsa man to fear, Just conslder him for 9 moineut, Ie cives his vote, as Senator at Albany, to abolish pool-selling in the State.
