MOVEMENTS IN THE FAR EAST. Spectat by Cable 1o the Tribune LoxDo¥, May 19.—Apparently the first great battle of the Russo-Turkish campaign will be fought at Toprak-Kuleh, where the Russians, marching from Baynm mast foree tne mountan passes guarding the approach to the Erzeroum plaines. At last accounts there the main body was still four days’ march distant . from the pass. Thereforc the cannorading re- ported from Batoum probably indicates only secondry operations in the investment of Kars. I the Russians pass the mountains there will be slight obstacles to a union pf their maln forces operating in Asiatic Turkey for the over- throw of Moukhtar Pashs, whoss defensive position will be exposed too vcxwhelmlw.g pam- bers approaching from oppasite ‘dircctions. WAR YEELING IN IUNGARY. ) Loxpoy, May 19.—The Standard’s Pesth cor- ‘respondent says: “Some extreme Hungarian - papers demand that Count Andrassy should treat the approach of the Russians to the neigh~ borhood of the Austrian frontiers as a casus belli. Military men consider that the time has arrived for conceutrating a corps of observation in Transylvania. SERVIA. “T hear from Semlin that the military prepa- rations of the Servians are now quite evident. Prince Milan to-day nominated Col. Dragasche- vitch as Chief of Staff, and ordered Gen. Olim- ples to resume command on the Drina, towards which the artillery are marching. CIRCASSIAN VOLUNTEERS. “ A Widin dispatch of yesterday reports that 6,000 Circassians are joining the Turkish army as volanteers.” g i STRATEGICAL. A Bucharest dispatch, commenting on the re- moval of the Russian headquarters to Catroceni, says the cstablishment of the Russian head- quarters there indicates & purpose of expand- ing the Russian operations over an extended front. Thisleads to the natural conclusion that the passage of the Danube will not be made for some time, as it will bpe necessary to bring all the Russian reserve stores near the river, in order to prevent any delay afterit is crossed. With the Russian corps stretched along an extended frout, it will not be difficult to throw a force across the river at some undefended point, where the tete-du-pont may be seized and fortified to protect the crossing of other corps in the vicinity. As there are no heayy masses of Russian infantry on the Danube west of ITbrail, it is scarcely probable that any passage will be attempted’ until all the troops are in position.
