THE SENATORIAL QUESTION. Special Dispatch to The Triduns. . NEw ORLEANS, April 7.—The Senatorial agi- tation, although now working under the surface of affairs, controls the movements of the Com- mission more than is generally known. The' Republican candidates are Bosse and Judge ‘Wiley. - Warmoth is working for him-~ sclf, and. has George A. Sheridan ' as second choice, but neither. of , them has a following. Penn is the representative .of the new Administration party. The prescnce of Sam Cox has an injurious- effect. : Bis purpose is'to stiffen the Republicans and the Democrats, and to maintain the old party lines as strictly as possible. At his instigation Ellis and Levy; returned Congressmen, addressed the Demo- ‘cratic caucns night before last, ard assured the members present that they had notbing to gain to yielding a point to the Administration.,. Cox himself has been invited to address both Houses of the Nicholls Legislature. Hé Is the Machiavelli of the situation here, and to him wiil belong the discredit of disrupting the Adminis- tration folks here it the disruption occurs. - THE FEDERAL PATRONAGE * js another important element in the case. The . ultra-Democrats fear = to elect anybody who cau_ obtaln the confidence of the Administration, dispense the patronage, and thereby gain an influence in the State which could not be overcome. They prefer to bave a carpet-bagger zo into the Semate. It would be impossible, then, to say that the Administration had acted in bad faith, or that it bad only vielded to Nicholls becanse it was afraid to do otherwise. The ultras would rather send to the Scnate aman whom they knew would have mot the best case. The records, and the ability to Solfill the dutics of the Court are, however, with the Nicholls body, the processes of which are recognized inall parts of the State. COMMISSION VISITORS. . Besides the Supreme Court, a doubie com- mittee from the Nicholls Legistature und many’ private citizens visited the ‘Com- misslon to-day. Sowe of the latter testified particularly as to the strength of Nicholls out- side the city. Tbey asserted that the Nicholls Government was «s universally upheld in the porishes as in the city; that BIS courts were in peaceful operativn; his tax-cullectors in the discharge of their duties, and his State officers the only ones Mknowlcd&d. Mr. MacVeagh, of the Commission. in conver= sation to-lay, said he was at zloss to decide how long the Commission wigbt contioue. One thing he could declare, namely: That as busi- ness and professional men, With large interests suffering at howe, they were all jous to dis- atch business, and make their report to the resident. Gen. Hawley sald that nothing of importance had yet been doue. The serivas work is to begin Monday, when the cases,on each side are to be formally pregented. T PARISILIUDGEY i were called before the Commission. They re- ceived their commissions from Packard. ™ Two of them stated there had been a cbange in pub- lie fecling since the election, and that Nicholls was now upheld by a majority of the voters in their district. The other exp: posite opinion. 4 Most of the parishJudges commissioned by Packard have filed their-osths of office Nicholls. The two Attorney-Generals were admitted. Packard’s man s a brotber of Randall Hunt, and accupies a hlgwmion socially. Heim- pressed the Commission by his bearing and hisé argumcaots. A member of the Commission said to-night- that he fclt now more hopelessly confused at the situation than when he left Washiogron. Puckard has made a fine impression by hie ', manners, bis person, his_dignity, and the abun-, dant proofs of his high character. ' THE COMMISSION AT WORK. 7o the Western dssoctated Press. . NEew ORLEANS, April 7.—According to ap- pointment made on Friday night the Jotnt Com- mittee from tne Democratic are waited upon the Presidential Commission this morning: at the parlors of the St. Charles Hotel. The: consultation lasted two hours. It was secret, and nothing was fl:an:d further than the facti that members of the Commission were pro- pounding numerous _questions as .. to the state of affairs. The Committedé made a detajled verbal statement of the status of the Government, giving the number of parishes and officials that bad acknowledged al- egiance to the Nicholls Government, and wilk at a future interview present documentary facts. The Commission willat an carly day mext wfleiek visit the Legislature and various State offices. the op- THE PACEARD SUPREME COURT. : Chief-Justice Ludeling and Assoclate-Justices King and Leonand, of the Kellogg Supreme Court, had a_lengthy ieterview with the Com- mission, and Jaid before them an elaborate printed brief showing _their title to office under the Constitution, irrespective of the question whether Packard or Nicholls was of right Governor.” At 2 o'clock, District-Judges Marks, Cole, and Hunter, for the Foarth, Fifth, and Nfoth Judidal Districts of the- State, each elected on the Republican ticket, bad a long interview with the Commission, and emphatically declared the sentiments of their districts to be in fayor of the: Packard Government. Lhe three dls-- tricts embrace eleven parishes, with a total population of 130,694 AN EXCITING INTERLUDE - in the interylew was the cross-examination of Judge R. A. Hunter as follows: . = Q.—\Vhodid you vote for for Governor! A.— Nicholls. s Q.—Who did you vote for for President? A.-: ‘Tilden. # . Q.—How long have {on been a Democrat? A.—All mylife, [was a Democrat right in this State and expect to die a Democrat. Q.—Why do you now descrt the Democratic party and support Mr. Packard? 'A—Because the Democratic glrty bas Jeft me, and does not protect the rights of citizens, but advocates murder, and I do not approve of murder, and because I believe Packurd was squarely clectéd, and &_majority of the white people of my district (Rapides, Grant, and Ver- Ron Parishes), prefer him for Governor. Gen. Harlan had a Jong private interview with Gov. Paciard in the evening, the purport of which has not transpired. NICHOLLS' SUPBEME COURT. ~ At5p. m. the members of the Nicholls Su- preme Court by invitation called on the Com- }nlulom The ~consultation was entirely in- ormal.
