THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 1877—SIXTEEN PAGES. 11 SUBURBAN. ENGLEWOOD,) AND ITS ADVANTAGES. 0Of the many suburban towns which environ Chicago, there is none which is better adaptcd 1o 2ll classes of society than Englewood. The man of means ean have his Jarze arounds, * commodioas house, and pleasaut surround- ipgs, while the less wealthy dass can’ find cheaper, and, to them, equally pleasant, homes. The communication with tle city by means of tbe three lines of rafiroads which pass through 1Le centre of the place give it facilities which fow other suburbs possess. There are twenty- six passenger-trains daily each way which stop pere. A person can ride from Englewood to Caicago in nice warm cars fn the same time it would take to zo from Thirty-first street or western avenue to the centre of the city jo the streetcars. The school {facilities are considered by many unequaled even by Caicago. The graded schools are conducied upon @ plan which recommends itself to “sil who are interested in the subject of educa- tion. There §s the High School, in which the pigker branches are taught, and the Normal Scliool, which prepares its students to become teachers. Almost every denomination of the Christian religion is represented here, and most of thein have houses of worship already built. Toe souisl element is well represented, and the entertainments given are of the highest onler. An unusual number of fine singers have their homes here. The dramatic and reading 1alent is well represented by amateur profes- signals and non-professionals. The clubs, danc- ing parties, theatricals, and concerts, furnish the recreation necessary at less expense than they could be had in the city. One of the attractions which . recommends itsclf to the male portion of the resideuts is the Englewood Senicr Club._ This Club was incorporated under the general State law, and organized last May. It has now forty-cight a-tive members. They ave s hall i Tillotson Block, twenty-two fect in width by forty-cizht fect in length, fitted up in fine style. The walls are nicely papered, and 1be floor carpeted. In this hall are two billiard- 1zbles, one of which is used asa pool-table. Tue hall is lighted by honging chandeliers. In addition to this there is a double-parlor, which Las just been added by the Ciub at considerable expense. The parlors are each fifteen feet square, and are clegantly papered and carpeted in what is koown as the “high-art pattern.” Card-tables, chess, and other games are pro- vided. Adjoining the parlor fs the oftlce of the Secretary, neatly fitted up to correspond with the otber rooms. Cloak-rooms, wash-rooms, and ante-rooms are distributed in convenient lo- cations. ‘The cost of fitting up this hall and parlors was about 21,250. It is the intention of the Club to give 3 weekly ladies’ reception Friday evenings. In anticipation of this they have procured at an additional ex- Jense 2 lphmo for the pariors. The first rece) tion will be given Fridav evening. The Clubis conducted on hichly moral principles; no liquors are allowed in the rooms, no profanity is toier- ated, and betting on any of the games is pro- hibited. The present officers are: A. Charles Potter, President; A. B. Condit, Viee-Presi- dent: E. M. Jarrett, Treasurcr; Frank Sheflield, Sceretary; and an Exccutive Committee of nine members. A matter bas recently come to-light which {or the tine created quite a little ripple of ex- ¢itement in this usually quict town. In the early part of Izst September & man came to this place with his family, with the intention, as he stated, of making it his home. He gave his name as David Bewick, and said that he was from Cansda. He purchased o small place of Mr. Davicon, paying $500—a part of the pur- dnqsemonny—down in cash, and took possession ofit. Heproved no valuable sddition to the soclety or nelghborhood. He was morose and reserved, disinclined to make friends or cquaintances. His desire scemed to be that be might be let alone, and his desire was gratified. The people here, unlike those of many other places, have pecunar gifts in this irection, when so inclined. Bewick bad been Dere but a short time when Constable Joc Bar- thurd received orders to ehadow him. as he was suspected to be a fugitive from justice having changed a check on the Federal Bank, of York- ville, Canads, from 80 to £500, drawn the money, and left for the Statesunder sn 3s- sumed name. From descriptions given him the officer was pretty certain lie was_on the right feent. The game at last took fight, so closely ¥aske watclied, and on the 23d of last month fitted to Chicago. He took rooms in an ob- scure hotel, and was there arrested by Officer Barchard on the Gth inst. On tho 9th the E:Sn:ller was - taken back to Yorkville by a dian officer. -Bewick’s family are in i- €220 fn reduced circuinstances, - Davison has moved back_into his house azaln. He is §500 aheaa, and iS again ready for another Canadian purchaser. ITENS. ) Prof. J. H. Laird, of Oberlin College, was in 1o¥n on the 10th inst. He held a reception at the residence of Mr. S. Lee. The remains of Mrs. C. A. Pomeroy, whodled # Aun Arbor, Mich., were brought Yiere last 'xfid‘ and placed in the Park Ridge Cemetery. & leceased was the sister of Mrs. S. NEWS OF TIE WEEK. 1t has been so disagreeably cold and stormy during the past week that Evanston has pre- sented a quiet, and perhaps a melancholy, ap- pearance. - The streets have been deserted, ex- cept only now and then a weary pathfinder is seen laboriously plodding his way. Business Las not been as active as usual, and everything socially has taken a rest. The fireplace scems to have been the centre of attraction. The thrifty wife has been surprised that * Lodge * did not bave its usual 1lascination and the club- room its mazy or intcllectual attraction. In fact, every man of family has been a dear” and devoted liusband the past week. And this is afl due to the storin, which has snowed up every channel of entertain- meut 2nd diversion except the religious ones, The different churches bave, however, been the scene of nousual soiritual devotion and ex- fv:ncnce. The afternoon and evening meetings have becn well attended, and much good has been realized. Friday evening the union meet-, ing was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Noyes. He chose tor his text, “ My son, give me thy heart.” Mr. Price, of Chicago, added much to the interest of the meeting. After the exercises there were numerous petitions for prayer. The Social Club will have as a ncans of amusement Thursday evening o sleigh-ride. Aside from the principal feature on the pro- granmne, Pound will be in readiness for them when thev return to discourse sweet music. Gil- Lert had been clected Foreman of the hose- company bearing his name. It was a mistake, the devil,” as usual, belng_at the bottom of it. The Hose Company C. J. Gilbert elected Jobu Carney Foreman, Joseph Clabp First As- sistant, and J. R. Fitch Second Assistant. The Eclectic Club will meet Monday evening at the residence of Mr. Purington. ‘The Baptist Church has abolished reserved seats. Ar. Simeon Farwell, wife, aud children have inder of the winter. ov. The Juniors and Soph- omores will contend for this prize in the Congregational Chureh, the en- tertaiument to begin promptly at 7:d5. The question: * The interests of the country are not_promoted by emigration,” wlll be_ dis- cussed by Louis Karchmer, C. 1I. Querean, J. M. Wheaton, of the Junior_ Class, and Miss J. E. Webb, J. E. Adams, aud N. T. Hobart, of the Sophomore Class. It is now wranged that citber class can take both prizes. This will cre- ate more of a class distinction than ever, and will excite the Juniors_hereafter to be a little more cirewmspect in theif chioice of contestants. The Signia Chi Fraternity met Thursday even- inrand tendered a banquet to Fred M. Taylof, who was so successful in‘carrying off two of the New York Inter-Collegiate prizes, amounting to §250. The gathieriug was very é)le:ls:nl. The following were clected editors of the Tripod : From the Adelphic, A. Cook'and T. Bradley; from the Hinman, C. . Murgan and F. E. Knappen. OTHER SUBURBS. PARK RIDGE. The Week of Prayer has becn generally ob- served here. The ordivary social attractions have been postponed, and the churches bave held frequent devotional meetings. The decp and absorbing interest in the revival movement is not confined to the city, but is felt here, and doubtless in other places, which, through the full apnd excellent published reports in Tue TRINTNE, aro brought within the {nflucnces of this wonderful work. ‘Tuesday evening an fmpromptu reception was held at the residence of Mr. Gibbs, in homor of the Rev. Mr.Llaird, mow Pro- fessor of Mathematics in Oberlin College. He was the firct pastor of the Congregational Chaurch in this place, and was much beloved by Iiis people, and bizaly esteemed by the whole community. A large humber of his old parish- jonersand friends gathered together to grect him, The evening was delightfuily spent in re calling pleasant reminiscences of the past when the. According to the prin- ciples of the Justice, the defendant was dis- charged. The Forrestrille Club, which was to have met at the hall Friday night to engage ina phan- tom party, was unable to face the snowdrifts, and so tlie entertainment was postponed.
