LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE. THE CENTRAL REFORM CLUB. To the Editor of The Tridune. CrroAGo, Nov. 25.—~For the past few weeks a number of paragraphs have appeared in the columns of your paper regarding the Central Reform Club. A reply was sent to your office on the 81st of last month, but you failed to publish it. I cannot be persuaded that you will permit such an injustice.to be repeated. I have been suffering from a very severe at- tack of inflammation of the lungs since the Sth of this month, and up to Thursday of this pres- ent week was not permitted to leave my room. 1did, however, violate orders on Sunday, the 13th, and have since paid dearly for my indis- cretion by a severe relapse. I cauld not, howerer, sce statements so far from truth appear against me without making an effort 10 stop the tongue of scandal. This state of things will answer for my apparent want of dilizeace in following up those para- graphs as tbey appearcd, and a number of which I may not have scen. Now to facts: The gross amount of funds subscribed to the Cen- tral Reform Club was $150, and this was snb- seribed by three gentlemen. Not one dollaf was subscribed by John M. Armstrons. He failed to negotiate the loan upon which ke based his calculations to run as an Independ- ent candidate for ‘Sheriff. Not one dollar was subscribed by a Congressional cundidate. No one was persondlly solicited for a sub- seription to the fund of the Central Reform Club. When the ticket was made up the candi- dates were notified, 2nod a reasonable time for a reply allowed. They were then notified of their assesment and a time fixed for payment. If the payments were promptr then all the my- chinery which was organized would bave gone into rapid motion. The time having arrived and not sufficient funds received, the running of a general ticket wus abandoned, and all furtber subscriptions were refused—a number of shich were tendered. Unless all paid a full ticket could not beé run, so we stopped right where we were, and our full attention given to the personalinter” ests of those who had subscribed. They have been well and faithfully severed. The only people who I can find so deeply interested in this mat- ter i6 o number of professional dead-beats, to- gether with a number of our glorious ward patriots, who presumed that I had a “bar’] » of money to sling around among the boys. I nave paid out more money than Ireceived, and in addition lost two months’ time. This is also such men as the Democrats might select on their part. ‘Then the Convention should select by lot from these six names a candidate for President. ff the Democrats were successful in securing 2 man from their party, then let the Republic- avs be allowed to sclect a candidate for Vice- President, and vice versa. Then let each Elect- or Eleflqe himself to the others and to the whole Fu lic over his own siznature that he would cast bis individual ballot for the candidates thus chosen. This, of course, would be done at the several State Capitals in pursuance to law. In my judament this course would meet the ufi:proml of all the people. It would relieve all the embarrassments of the ent complica- tions. The politician would be absolved from all pledzes made contingent on the election of eitber Tilden or Hayes. The then constitution- ally-chosen President would be under no obli- sation to any ring or et of machine politicians, - and the people would slip out from under the domination of varty leaders. The new Administration would be {n the best possible position to give us a thoroughly honest Governmcent in the interests of all reforms. 1f I was going to indicate_a policy for this Admin- istration, I would say, Turn ont one-half of the present office-holders, and fil thelr places by postage, etc..
