THE CHICAGO ' 'RIBUNE: SUNDAY, JUNE 11, 187 _SIXTEEN PAGES MISCELLANEOU Communication of the Annual Grand Lodge of Masons. Election of Officers of 0dd Fellow B Lodges-—-Redistricting’ the State. anpual Sesslon of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut. Preparations for the Gathering of the nghts of Pythias, lIASONIC. - THE GRAND LODGE. The eesslon of the Ninety-fifth Annual Com— munication of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons commenced in New York Tuesday afternoon. Grand-Master Thorne de- Jivered the annual address. He spoke of the Lodgeas in a most flonrishing -and flattering condition. Bpenking of forelgn relations, be £aid: - Qur forelgn relations remain abont in the eame condition as 1ast year. The Grand Orient of France Las made no sign during_the year, and evidently considers the friendehip and correapondence of the American Grand Lodger a8 a matfer of 5o conee- Qquence. This is to be regrotted; but, nntil there s 2 willingners on the part of that body to recognize The right of this and ther Grand Lodges to exclu- rive inrisdiction within their own territories there can be no change, and we shall regtetfally, hut none the less firmly, be oblized totreat as strangers those whom we would gladly welcome to our Masonic homes. ~The course of the German Grand J.odges is scarcely, if at all, more satisfactory. Claiming for themsclves the very right for which we contend, and proclaiming that no lodge can be formed on German territory withont their consent, they have thur far shown no willinzness to concede the eame rights to ur or to withdraw the lodges lncated in thie and other States. They propoke to compromire the matter by a serics of treaties, Jooking, however, only to their own benefit, since they proposo to have us recognize the os- tabliehment in this country of subordinate lodzes owing them allepiance, but gaying nothing cciprecal privileae on onr part, even were it poseibla that we conld profit by such a concession, or onr policy allow us to procecd in that direction. One farther etep has been taken by them throngh thelr Grand Lodge League, which is the declaration that the organizations of colored persons in this country now trespassing on various of the Ameri- can Grand-Lodge juriadictions are rezular, and hence that their invasion of the territory of this #nd other Grand Lodger in the United States meets Ihe approval of our brethren in Germauy, althongh atlatest advices thoy had not gone £o far as to offer dlirect recormition and interchange of representa- tives. ~ This, however, isbuta ‘matter of time, and 3t ia far from certain that the Leagne now in ses- elon will not take this conclading step, and thus by indiscretion place its constituents in onen denial of nur right to govern onr own affairs withont forcign intervention and dictation. There can be but onc ending to all this, which I refrain from indicating at the | present time. in the hope that wiser coun- tele may yet prevall, and that harmony and peace wmay be secured to our brotherhood wherever dis- persed. MICIIGAS. The sereion of the Grand Commandery of l\nicht.s Tcmn'lnr of Michigan bas been inter- he Right Eminent Grand Commander Slr 8. \mhcws delivered the annual address. In the course of the Iabor, the question of the ercction of a euitable_mansoleum over the tomb of the late lamented Brother George Washington, was iaken up and o committec appointed. R. W. William J. Sinclair, from_the Committee on Lafayctte Statue, reported that the statue is now in the possession of the Committce, but, as the pedestal is not completed, the unveiling will be postponed uutil Scptember or October. *'3R. A Curious Resolution, Nz Tork World. A curious resolution was offered Tuesday in the Senate by Mr. Boutwell, of \Inss:uhnsetts. requesting the President to furnish the, Senate with “a fac-simfle ¢f the original drafts of the letter of the Becretary of State to the Minister of the United States ™ in England in 3ay, 1661, on the subject of the British proclamation of m:utmlltr. It has long been whispered in well- informed gflhtlmfl circles that at the request of: the late Senator Sumner President Lincoln in- sisted upon “ going over” Mr. Seward’s orig- inal draft of the Tetter himeel, struck out many passages of It, corrected much of its phraseology, and generally toned it down and gave it charac- ter. “This story rested, webelieve, originally on Lhemu.hnntvuf Senator Sumner, who made no sceret of his contempt for Sccretary Seward’s diplomatic abilitics, and who used to maintain that but for the sagacity and decision of Presi- dent Lincoln Mr, Seward would have got the country into war with botli England and France Defore the first battle of Bull’s Run. Perhaps Mr. Boutwell desires to verify or disprove this story. But if so, which? And if either, why?
