XINTS TO HOGSE-RENTERS, To the Ed¥tor of The Chicago Tribune: Cmcaco, April 21.—Now that the 18t of May is upon us, and thonsands of families are on tho eve of pitching *‘their moving tent,” not *‘a day’s mareh nearer home,” but simply in an- other locality, I feel 3 genuine thrili of philan- thropic interest warm my veins, prompting me to add to the world's stock of bealth and bappi- ness by a few simple words of advice. First—The bead of the family should observe whether the street on which is located the house or rooms he contemplates renting is paved, lighted, and contsins water and sewer; also ‘whether the adjacent buildings are of wood or brick, and observe too their extertor appearance, for a man may be-judged quite 28 accurately by his neighborhood as by hia clothier or company. If poseible, secure & brick house, or one in tha vicinity of houses of this material, on acconnt of the incressed safety from Second—In regard to the building: avoid a3 far as possible old wooden tenements, as much on account of their unnesithfulness as from tha demoralizing elemonts which always cluster around them; but seek instead a house occupied by as few families as possible, and if you caa afford one by yourself, so much the better, and be thankful that you are in such favorable cir- cumstances these dull times. Third—Having found & place with all thess ontside circutustances as favorable as yon think you can possibly afford, look tarough the apart- ments thoroughly, using your-noose at the same time. BSesthat the rooms are conveniently lo- cated with rogard to each other, snd are every ‘way suited to your means and maaner of Lving, and that they possess the general conveniences of closets, paatries, etc. Ses that the pantry is lighted from the outside, 80 that 1t may be ven- tilated. Examine the movemonts of thoe windo # sash fo see that thev are in working ordsr; opea the Little door under the sink, and seo thac tns wasto pipe is at least one-half inch in diameter, and thatitis trapped something like this letter (=), & matter of vital importance, as there 18 nothing 8o productive of fevers as sower-zas. Algo examine the bath-room apd water-closets, to 8se that they are in good working order. The pan of the water-closet should always stand foll of water, whuch thus forms » double trap against the eacape of gaa from this quarter. Examive into the heating arrangements; if a furnace is used see that the hot-air fiues are in order and that all stove-pipe holes are provided with prop- er covers. Observe, too, that there are oni- houses, or other conveniences for coal, kiudling, etc., and, finally, secure yeur rooms or house, a8 the cage may be, for a specified longth of timn, 80 that you will nov be linble to be turned ons at an inconvenient season.
