The new building of tho First Baptist Chureh, - corner of South Park aveoue and Thirty-firs street, is tobe dedicated next Sunday with ap- propriate ceremonies, when saveral celebrated ministers from the East will be presont to assist. “Fhe lot on which the building etands has a front of 110 feet on Bouth Park avenue, and rans back to & dopth of 165 feet, the church improve. ‘ment, including anditorinm and Sunday-schoal room, covering the entire ground. The rea: portion of the lot is occupied by s two'story building, which inclades the Sunday-school and Iecture-rooms. The latter is on the first floor, and is 54 by 100 feet, and 24 feet from floor t¢ ceiling. The Sunday-school floor is alao 54 by 100 feet, and 16 feet high. ‘The auditorium or church proper is 70 by 0t fect, and 50 feet in height. The entire structurs it of stone, rock-faced, with dressed margins at al the angles; the door and window trimmings and other details aro of cut and dressed sandstone, the moldings, carvings, etc., being of the sama material. The roof is slate-covered, and ths inner walls are of brick. On the northwest corner of - the building is Jocated the main tower and belfry, 160 feet ia beight. It is purely Gothic, but of & design de- cidedly original, treated in such a manner as to appear very pleasing and artistic, and of such & character as to aitract attention at once from the passer-by. The front of the church has thres Iarge and beantifully-stained glass Gothic windows. On the southwest corner of tha building is a small- or tower of less pretensions, though symmel- ricalin appearancs, 60 feet in hoight. Thers is alargo entrance doorway at tha bass of this, snd two in the main tower. The sidea of tha puilding are divided with buttresses and larpa windows, with & smaller turret, or towor, 100 feet high, located between the Bundas-schoo! and the church, with an open bzlfry-deck. At the base of this there aro two more largs en- trances to tha Sanday-school and charch. The exterior has been maco as nearly fire- proof " as posaible, galvanized iron being used where stone could not be. The curving of the capitals of tho columns and pilastora of {his chorch is scknowledged to ba -Gashia work ever exectited in Chicago. The anditorium is provided with five larzs an- trances, each being equal to 40 linesl foet o? doorway. The floor of the auditorinm descends 8 feet Ginches from the front towards ths pal- pit, and the pews are srianged in o semi-circalar form, with aisles radiating to the varions door- waye. The auditorinm is provided with a gal- lory, constructed after the amphithestro stvls, which does pot in any menner exclude tho light, and appears gracefal, the_shape aud slopo beiny perfect in their way. This partion of tho church will seat 500 people, white 1,000 more can be accommodated in tho pews on the mam fo thus affording a eeating capacity for 1,500 pe: sous withont crowding. Tho auditoriam is testsfully frescoed, and was under the immediate supervision of William H. Wilcox, architoct, after origioal designs. The atylo ia thoronghly Gothic, harmonizing with the stamned- glass windows, farmiture, sad carpets. The 100m is heated by steam, and the veatilation haa been made as perfect as possible. Tho Sunday-school room is approached from Bouth Park avenue and Thirty-first strect, whers the main entmnce is located. The first siory of this building is occupied by the lectare-roomsa and parlors, with every provision for light, ven- tilation, and other comvenieaces. The stair- cases to the Stnday-school room, which is in the second story, are & marvel for comfors, and very broad and convenient for reaching both sehool~ room and gallery of the church. ‘This room waa fally. described in THE TmIDUNE at the time if was dedicated in December Iast.
