One hes ooly to attempt to walk elowly across any one of the narow business streets or brosd boulevards of the city, and s furioualy-driven Toifure or gigantic omnibus will do the business for him. Pedestrians have no rights which French cochers are bound to respect. The child waa led. At the oroeging of the streets, where there is an open space, there are certain round, slightiy-raiced places called ‘refuges,’ whera one is safe from the chariots and the horsemen. They are liks islands in the midst of the rapids of Niagara. Having reached one we 'l.mga: on the brink, and fear to launch away,’ thinking with a home-sick looging of the sturdy, gallant policeman of DBroadway, our modern Banto Chnstofero. The most noble promenadar is at the mercy of the most vulgar charretier. In the times of the Bourbons it was the aristocracy who tore through the streets of Paria at full speed, without even shouting ‘gare!’ driving over the people. Now it is the people who drive over the anstocracy., Bo the world advanoes, ¢ Marchons!'” TRAITS OF THE POPE. The Noman correspondent of tha Paria Constz- tutionne! gives some curions and interesting de- tails of the inner life of the Pope. Itis well known, that Pius IX. isfond of his joke. He cracks bis wit oo all occasions. In 1873, Mgr- do Merode broke his leg whils inspecting some houses he was baviog built. The Holy Father paid him a visit in his apartment in the Vatioan: whither: the Bishop had been conveyed. After condolicg with him on hie misferiune, the Pope, on leaving, recommended him to be more pru- @ent in the fature, otnerwise the maladie da la pierre which tormented him might play Lim false. - This was s ely poke at the Dishop's menia for building stona Louses. On another occasion & homeopathic doctor demanded his ben ediction for & new hospital. The Pope at once granted it, but in his letter be stipuiated that the blessing should be given, not only to tho doctore, but algo to the as<stants, nurses, and everybody connected with the establish- ment—that i8 t0 8ay, it was not to bea benedic- tiona dose hmnwpaJ)lw:m 1t has hitherto been thought that Pius 1X. bolds theatres and actors in tbe utmost abhorrence, If the correspondent in questiqn is to be believed, his Holinesa is nothing like 80 intolerant in the matter as he is Tepresented. The Pops, it appears, has often given proofs of his good wili toward the sock and buskin. Wheu a celebrated local comedian, pamed Domenilone, gave his farewell at the Valle Theatre, the Holy Fusther eent him 50 crowas for a box, which, however, he did not occupy,. mush to the regret of the actor. The Pope is s excelout musician, and plays well on the violoncello. He nossesses # good baritone voice, which he exer- cises on ali festive occasions. He is very par- ticular about the getting up of all raligious fetes, and on one occasion iniroduced a noveity which cansed much surprise. It was apropos af the w‘us de possession of Bi. Jesn da Lateran. Daring the procession Tound the coufessionsl, the D'ope, instead of marching to the right, want to the lert. The master of the ceremonies was stupetied, and, runhma up, exclaimed : * Santifa, this is the way,” pointing to the right. The Pope took no notice, sud contined his route. Again the masier of the ceremonies -sdvanced and said, ** Lbeg your pardon, Santifa, bt this is the way.” The Holy Father turned his bead and reples, “I beg your pardon also, but this is the way," pownt- 10g 1o, the lefu *Ob, very well” Tejoined: the master of the ceremonies, **if yon wish to make innovations I have nothing mors to say— but this is the way, all the same. Siza per di qui.” We are next treated to some detaiis of the Pontifical wardroba. His Holiness, who is & great suutl-taker, wears out five cassocks a year; euch cassock costs £20. His red cope costs £92; it lasts him sbout s twolvemonth, His sik svackiugs, which. sre mado by a Belgian house, cost £4 s pair. His shoas vary in price, accord- ing to the nature of the embroidered cross on them; cua pair is decorated with croeses of brillisnts, worta £4,000. Tha Pope's old clothes ara eagerly songht after by devotees, who keep them 85 rah,.mus relics, and maoy are tha faith- ful who write to him to beg the gift of an old slipper or p:cubhudlexcmal ; bt the Holy Father, 28 a ruls, leaves the matter in the bands of his yalet, who paturally makes fine pickings. BAVARIAN BEER. Chasles D. Warner wiites from Manich to the Hartford Courant: **The ouly place in Munich whers good beer can be. had just now is at the cellar of the Court-brewery; and there is not enough of thac to eatisfy the thirsty public only a few daya st & time. Enough must al- ways be" reserved for the Boral drmkers, and what is over is givem to the public. It is a demoerstic place. -The highest and lowest mingle together in & struggle for the pracions fluid. Thero are no decent sccommodations for any one, and no one is waited on. The Xeller is entered from the rough-paved alley, full ‘of beer-barrels and trucks. Within are low vaulted rooms ; in one of them beer is dis- peosed over & counter. In the other are rude benches and tables, xnd every seat is filled.. You can dimly see through the tobacco smoke in thase low vaults that thero are three or four hundred men sitting there, each with his mass of beer in a stone mug. It is nearly noon. The outer room is crowded with servants and with geoilemen striving to get their mugs into the haods of the drawers. Behind thecounterarehalf 3 dozen men and women filling the mugs as fast as they can draw. On the counter is & gren plat- ter, with several compnrtments, into which the vanous sorts of money received are cast. To get s mug of beer is a veritable struggle. Yon have first to find a mug, anot always easy task when nearly all who have them hold on to them for & second or third filling. - Having caught a mug, you go tos troagh of running water in the conrt and wash it ; you then atruggle up to the coun- ter, and thrust it in, and anxiously waich that you get the same one back sgain. As to drink- 1ng it, you may either go into the street and ait on a barrel, or lean sgainst a poat, or force your way into tne crowd in the vaults, where you are in tie best compsny and the worst company, and are in the midst of & babel of guttural German. “There is nothing short of arage forthis hop beer ; nothing in Munich is more uo'll:_ghz after, except, perhaps, Wagoer's oporss. ‘Tho keller is full day and night, and I saw people there who bave the appearance of remaining for & week. Itis, faet, a sort of duty to stick by this beer while it lasts. It is accounted yery wholesome. This ‘brewing was opened about two weeks ago, and will be consumed in a few days more. There will be no -more like it before April. Being, as I said, wholesome, it is necessary to drink mough of it now to last s person for &ix months. Those whom I saw to-dsy were in & fair way to doit.” THE POWER OF KINDNESS AT A BULL-FIGHT. A Cadiz letter in the New York Ledger says: «Notice had paen posted on all the public places that on a certain day the bull called *E1 Moro® would be introduced into the arens, and that, when he should have besn goaded to the utter- ‘most fury, s young girl. would appsar. and re- duce the animal to quiet gubjection. The people of Cadiz had heard of *El Moro® aethe most magnificent bull ever brought into the city, and ic 200u became known that the girl thus adver- tised was a peasant. girl of Espars, who had petted the ball, and fed it snd carsd for 1t during the years of ita growth. Ox the lppmneed day the vast amphitheatrs was fllled with ap anx- ious, eager crowd. The bulls had been killed and dragged eway, and then the flourish of trumpets ‘aunounced the coming of the hero of the day. - With a deep, terrific mu, “El Moro"' entered upon the ecene. He was truly mago ifi- cont, & bovine monarch, biack and glossy, S it eyes of fire, ddlgng nostrils, and wicked-look- ing horns. ‘The bicadores attacked him warily, hnxlad their banderillos (small, dart-like jave- Jins, ornamented with ribbous, and intended to jade and infuriate). The bull had killed thres horses off-hand, and had received eight baude- Zitlos 1n his neck and shonlders, when, upon & given sigosl, the pieadores and matadores snd- denly withdrew, leaving .the infuristed besst aloug in his wid paroxysm of wrath. Pres- ently s soft, musical npote, ~like the piping of & Iark, was heard, and di- rectly afterward a girl not more than 15 years of age, with the tasteful g;rb of an Anda- insian pessant, and with s pretry {i sfn htly fto the arens, approschiog the che boll fore Jessly, st the same tme calling “his name : < Maro]-Moro! Yayoy!’ At the first soond of the sweet voice the-snimal ceased his- fury and m‘i.otudlhphce whenco it came, apd when he saw the girl he plainly manifested pleasure. She camo to his head and put forth her hand, which he licked with his tongue. Then she sang a low, sweet song, ot the same time caressing the animal by patting bhim on the forehead, and: while she sang, the suffering 'monarch kneeled ot herfeet. Then she stooped and gently removed the cruel b‘ndenllns, after ‘which, with her arms around * Bl Moro's' nack, she led him toward the gate of the torril."” PERSONAL. oY REAL IESTATE.
