The Cathedral of the Holy Name, corner Su- perior and Stats streets, will ba deaicated to-day with the nsual ceramonials of the Roman Cath- olic Church. The uew edifice is very handsome in appearance, and its arrangements areon s liberal scale. It is built in the Gothic style, from the plans of Ar. C. P. Keely, of Brookiyn. The fu!l length of the new Catbedral is 216 feet ; 1ts width begins at 126 feet at the entrance, and is 102 feet at the transepts. Tho ground plan is somewbat in the form of a cross, the transepts, which project 14 feet beyond the main body in front, and form the body of the church to the rear, representing the arms. There isan ev- ident disregurd for economy of #pace in the in- |4 terior of the Cathedral. It has =a targe vestibule, broad aisles, and massive pews, but, notwithsianding these encroachments on space, the auditorium has a seating capacity for 2,300 persons, and it is esti- mated that on extraordioary occasions & congre- gatic of 4,000 can be accommodated. This is far beyond the capacity of the Jesuit Church, which up to the present has been considered the largest Catbolic chuxck in the State. The interior of the new_edifice presents a fine Goshic-grained ceiling. Two rows of pillars ex- tend pea:ly its whole length. The height from the floor to the ceiling is 70 feet. The vestibule at the main entranca on State street is 12 fosl wide. From the nave to the transept is 78 feet, and the extension beyond—the full length of the transept—is 126 feet. The altar place is 43 feot by 64 foet in dimensione. There are eight points for entrance and exit. Threo main en- trances are on State strect. There aro two entrances at the trausepts, and three more in the rear of the church for the conven- ience of the pricsts. The aliar is of marole of excellent design, and of Laltimore maanfacture. The spire, which is 210 fest above tbo founda- tions, is s striking featare of the new Cathedral. The pround on which it is bult is valued at £50,000, and the church has cost $200,000 in building. This makea it the moat costly sacred edifice in the city. ‘I'be parisb of the Holy Name came into being in 1846. ‘The land on which the Cathedral now stands was donated by Mesars. Ogden and New- berry some time previous for Catholic educa- tional purposes. This donationled to the estab- Lishment of the Umversityof St. Mary's of the Lake. The Iste Rev. J. A. Kinsella was the first President of that insti- tation. In the year named, after the University had gotten fairly established, he organized the parish of the Holy Name. The congregation \was without a regular church for soveral yeara. bat i 1848 & small building was erected on tne present site. In 1853 a mew church on an ex- tensive scale was built, but it was never thor- oughly completed. It went down in_the great fire. Owing to some difficnlty with the former Bishop, Father Kinsella left tue parish some Tears ago. Bince then there havo been & large number of pastoral changes. Among those who pave had charge are Fathers Dunve, Lyon, Magaop, Dillon, Doyle, 2nd lles. In 1859 Bishop Duggan made the church his Catbedral, sod it remained the official centre of the Diocese up to the time of its de- struction by the fire. The Rev. Jobn McMul- len, D. D., i8 the’ present pastor. This gentle- man holds a very prominent position in the local church, Heis & man of great scholastic attain- Taents, and of great vigor of thought. He is a Chicagoan, and is in fall sympatby with the peo- e. Since the firo the parish has worehiped in a very incoaveniant place,—corner of Chicago av- and Cass street. The new Cathedral 18 not enue opened 8 whit too soon, as, dariog the pnst few yoars, the nmmber of Roman Catholies in_ 'the paush, which comprises nearly all of the Eightenth, Nineteenth, 'and Tweotieth Wards, has largely incroased. Among the leading members of the pariah are Bheriff Agner, James Lane, P. V. Duone, Tom Mackin, Redmond Prindiville, Capt. John Prio- diville, John A. Doolin, Phil Conlev, Joseph Mc- Donald, Heory R. Green, Jjames B. Sallivaa, J. Y. Clarke, James Walsn, M. A. Devine, J. A. Drury, Dr._ Heorotin, Charles Henrotin, sod Ald. Tom Lynch. 7 The foundations of the Cathedral were laia 4o years ago with the pomp and ceremony be- fitting such an important event. Mr. T. May- nard, a gentieman who has been associated with numerous church erections in this 1Ly, Su- permtended the worls ; the expenditures have been under the immediate cootrol of Bishop ¥o- ley. "The Bishop and the parish are to be congratu- Iated upon the completiou of the Catbedral, which, for architectural beanty and internal lfi- pointments, is not surpassed west of New York. “Fne finishing of the ivterior haa progressed 8o far that very little remains to be done. | grand altar, » massive and beautiful design. has Beon entirely sat up. the Baltimoresns in charge of it having taken but little 1est siuce their arri- vala week ago.
