CORRESPONDENCE. AN APPEAL TO DTMOCEATS. Cmeaco, Oct. 80.—Honesty is the winning card for the Democracy. It was played in New York at the right time, and elected Tilden Gov- ernor of that State ; and before the game has ended he will probsbly be President of the United States. Democrats of Cook County, Jook to the ticket of the Opposition party. There is nothing therato awaken this sentiraent, but eversthing to repress it. Tum to Mi- chael Eeeley. In his candidature it finds an emphatic expression. Shartly beforehe re- tired from the office of Treasurer of Cook Conn- ty in 1862 or 1563, the Legislature of this Stato passed s Iaw anthorizing County Treasurers to pay over the public moneys held by them in the carrency of the United States. Xr. Keeley con- verted the gold held by him into currency, and made 215,000 by tha exchange, and this pre- mium with the carrency, be of his own saccord pat into the Treasury of the State for the bene- fit of tax-payers. Basinese-men of Chicago! I wish to lsy this matter upon your consciences. Suppose you should find that your Cashier had, by s lecitimste mse of your fuuds, added to them the sam of $15.000, and, instead of putting them into his own pocket, ‘which he conld legally do under the rules vou bad established for the conduct of your busi- ness, had consulted his conscience instesd of the statute, and placed it to your credit with your banker,—could you discharge that man? And, 1f his place should afterwards become va- cant, could you refuse his application for it ? How, then, can yon reject the ltgpljmfion for a public office of one who has in the performance of his official duties farnished o signal &n illustration of this rare virtue? Honest Democrats! Michael Keeley is carrying your flag alone in this fight. Do not, I implore you., in the interest of good government, do not desert bun. AX OLD-L1sE DEMOCEAT. [The above is from one of fhe oldest and most infinential Democrats in the city, and one of the chief members of the late Jeffersoman Club. En] MR, BOUNTREE DENTEE. o the Editor of The Chicago Tribune : Cmcaco, Oct. 30.—The statement in your col- amns of this morning, that I inetigated the dis- turbance at the meeting held in Farwell Hall last evening, i bass, libelous, and false. Ididnot even apprehond the meeting would assume s politi- cal complexion. I understood 1t to be called in the interest of good government and honest elections, to which all citizens were invited. As 8oon as the disturbance arose, I, thinking that as Chairman of the Opposition Carpaign Commit- tee I might be able to exert some influence, at once made my way into the midst of the excited throng that surronnded Mr. Hesing, and exerted myself to the utmost of my ability to #uppress the disorder. Many of the gentlemen upon the platform can, and no doubt will, bear witness to these statements. I desire an honest government as sincerely as you do. I have never been charged with “corruption in any pnb- lic position I have held, so faras I am aware. The name, fair credit, and peace of Chica- 0 i8 48 dear to me a8 it is to you, and I alwa; ave and always will do all that lies in my power to maintain it. - Yours ete., Joms M. BOUNTRER. THE GAMBLERS' GAME. To the Bditor of The Chicaoo Tribune : CHicAGO, Oct. 30.—The gambling fraternity of Chicsgo bave not espoused Hesing's cause for any love they bear the man, whom, on the con- trary, they both hate and fear as one in whom they sod others have no confidence, and over whom they have no permanent control, but be- csuse they see in him and the County Commis- sioners s means of perpetusting their ascend- ancy in city affairs, This fight to the gamblers is of no eignificance whatever, unless it secures to them throngh political influence their contin- ued control over the police, whose let-alons pol- icy is the eacret of their success. Hesing, Mil- ler, Rehm, ana the County Commissioners hav- ing promised the gamblers that the police &bafl not interfere with their business, AMcDon- ald brings all his cohorts forward to sustain and cary the Hesing ticket. Give McDonald the control of the city police, and he cares not who rules in other departments. L. FEANK LUMBARD'S BONG AT THE MEETING OF THE WERCEANTS. v ths Editor of The Chicago Tribune: CE1cAGO, Oct. 30.—As all the gamblers were at the meeting of the merchants, it would bave been more appropriste for Frank Lumbard to bave sung the comic song of Gus Da Bois', now il the rage in the small comcerts in the city. | With Mike McDonald in front of the stage, I think I see all the audience looking in one tion as Frank roars out the last stanza : And 1f one of his ro] You bet e will square o ‘Hls name is reversd at the police headquarters, 1In our Council I wonder he don't take the chair, Our city afiicials all smile when thes meet him, ‘They wouldn't do this if Loug John was Mlayor, MUIKE M'DONALD. Tothe Editor of The Chicago Trivune: CH1cago, Oct. 30.—1t is asserted by those who ‘were close to Mike McDonald in the fracas at Farwell Hall Friday evening, that he had two pistols in his pockets, ready for auy emergency, —~but of conrse “they were not loaded.” Mike never carries loaded weapcns. ¢ Forewarned is forearmed.” Let the voters remember the dangerous class ws have to meet at the polls next 1y, and do our duty at whatever cost. The crowd who would break down irs for ‘weapons in & pesceble meeting would not hesi- tate to use pistol or knife to carry out their evil designs on election-day. 3 AN ErevesTE WARD VoTER. 3 THE DXOCRACY FOB HUCK. To the Editor of The Chicago Tridune : Caicaso, Oct. 80.—I write this hastily, merely tosay thst Iam a Jeffersonian Democrat, and belonged to one of the Jeffersonian Clubs of a few weeks ago. Iam, and have been, disgusted at the proceedings of tho sxid organization in allowing itself to be swallowed up body and 300ta by that band of indescribebles styling 7 'y davas past I, may Democrats of tho Fufth Ward. bave been at a loss to know exactly themselves Opposition. For together with s dozen other what course to pursue Tuesday, but since the proceedings of last night at Farwell Hall we no longer hesitate, but have decided to go to.the polls ana deposit our_bsllots in the plumpest possibla way against the mobite, the bully, the monarchist, A. C. Hesing. Let all.good citi- zens, withont rezard to party, do likewise. BUCEETE. GREAT FRATDS COSTEMPLATED IN THE CRAW- FOBD DISTRICT! To the Editor of The Chicago Tridune: Cmcaco, Oct. 30.—There is not 8o servile & tool of corrupt men snywhere as Crawford, of the Conoty Board. The same men who control him have swindled Cicero out of thousands, aro operating extensively in the towna of Lskeand Hyde Park, snd are just beginmng to extend thir power into Lyons. Crawford is an 1ndit pensable necessity to them. Thoy bave got him nominsted. and now they mesn to eloct bim. By gravel trains and cinder trains, they expect to carry a gang of repeaters all the way from Hyde Park, via the Stock-Yarde sod Brighton, to Lyons, voting at every place. The poll that needs most to be watched is tho one at Brighton, whers there are from fifty to soventy-five legal voters. Crawford expects to poll from 500 to 700 votes there. This place should bave been annexed to the city at the samae time that ils last addition Wwas made. The bill was so drawn a3 to_sccomplish it But it was lofs out by soms frand in the en- grosament of the bill. It nowis a portion of Cicero; but ita rulers have no sympathy with Cicero peaple, except to voto taxes and eat them up. Cicero would gladly get rid of it, and Chi- cago ought to haveit. The rulers of this littlo gore of land believe in all the improvements which they can gt the contract for making, and they waat Crawford to be the man io let them the contracts, Taber is running far ahead in this district, and, with an houoest fote, he will certainly be elected. Tho defeat of Crawford is all that is desirable in order t0.give bonest men a majority in the next Board. BroCk-YARDS. 'DAYIS RETURNS TO THE ATTACK. To the Editor of The Chicago Tribuns: Cncaco, Oct. 29.—Pardon me for again tres- passing ou your epace. Mr. Waldron esys in to- day’s TmposE thst his sction with the Com- mittee that packed the self-styled Domocratic Convention “was entirely for the purpose of preventing the indorsement of the Opposition ticket.” True Democrats will be glad to learn that there was an honest man on that Commit- tee, but will be sorry to know that he was 80 terribly outwitted. The entire- bummer ticket was nominated by s vote of 114 out of 118, the otler 4, of whom Mr. W. says he was one, not voting. The ticket is ardently supported by Winston, an aristocrat with bummer proclivities, and Doo- litle, s most thoroughly conceited young jackanapes, well named save as to his tongue, lazy in business and seldom in Court, but wordy and omnipresent in bummer political meaetings. These two vainly imagine and impudently clsim to represent tho Democratic party. They are worse than Waldron as much as a persistent rascal is worse than a ropentant fool. 1t is Huck or Keeley. Democrats, though sold, capnot be delivered. Thieves, pumps, and steerers, aided by aspiring youngsters, and afew misguided though better men, do not constitute a third of the voters of Cook Comaty. Withan honest vote and an honest count, good men need not fear. - Jomx M. Davis. MISCELLANEOUS. THE POOLS. The usual centras for political gossip were de- gerted last evening, and = calm seemed to have settled on the bummer-mind, quite in contrast with the previous evening. The political Moguls and prophets who usually contribute somuch to the reporter's speculative budget were either sbeent in the ward meetings or st home meditating over their ghameful proceedings st Farwell Hall the eveniog previous. Those who were around were of the smalier tyve of *‘blowers,” and somehow thers was something in the atmosphere that ap- peared to depress them. Those of the sporting fraternity who a week ago wero betting on a majority for Hesing of 15,000, were content to bet even on Hesing against Huck and Keeley, bat seemed to prefer not to put up sny money. Soveral wers hbard to remark that they had left therr pocket-books howe. As between Healy and_ Finerty thie bets were twelve to ten in favor of the former, which it will be noticed is also a decided change of tactics over a week ago. In fact, these were the rates at which pools were selling at Foley's. In the case of the Tressurership, while the bets were being made as they were it was privately concedeg that the contest was really betweem Huck anll Hesing, with the chances in favor of the former. MERCIANTS’ COMMITTEE OF ACTION. Mr. George Armour yesterdsy made the fol- Jowing snnouncement : In accordance with the last resutution of the series sdopted by the mesting at Farwell Hall last evening, to-wit: “ Resolred, That s committes of eeven be ap~ pointed by the Chaik, whose duty §t shall be to rais 1he necessary funds and to make the mocessary or- rangements to detect and prosecute every person guityof fllegal vating on ‘election-day, and every of- cex of election who shall be guilty of s violstion of the 1aw,” I hereby appoint as the Committeo of Beven contemplated by that resolution ths following gentle- men, viz.: Wliam Aldrich, Richard T. End of the Base-Ball Season of 1875. The Bostons Retain the Whip for Next Year. The Hartfords Beat the St. Louis Club for Third Place. Batting Averages of Professionals for the Year, Opening of Billiard-Rooms. BASE BALL. THE BATTING RECORD FOE 1875. Below will be found & complete snowing of the batting record of every professional who had played base ball with & championship club during the base ball year ended last night. In meking this record every game has been includ- od which was played for the championship of 1875. Thistakes in all Centennial, Washiogton, and KEeokuk games aswell as those played®by or with clubs which finished the season. Incases where & player served with two or more clubs bis rec- ord has been consolidated, and the number of games with which he is credited comprises all ho bas plased- wherever he hes been. The list covers all tie games, but does not include ex- hibition contests or games with the Cincinnati or other professional or semi-professional clubs not in the ring. In short, it shows just the batting strength of each player as oxhibited in efforts to gain the championship peonant. It should ba ‘premised that tho showing is not perfectly fair, becsuso one man may have been to bat more times than another; but, £8 scores are now kept, it is the only test {hat can be applied to all the clubs in different cities whers 80 many ways of BOOring are com- mon. The record is also unfair in another respect: in that tho Dostons and other Eastern crack clubs had a chance to bring up their avorages by games wich the Washingtons and Centennials, which the Chicago and St Louis clubs did not enjoy. The firet column shows the number of gsmes in which each player participated during the sea~ son ; the second, the sum total of all the base- hits made by him during the season ; and the third the average of base-hitstoa game. The fact that a large number of smatours and poor attempts at professionals have taken part in some games have led to the drawing of alineat ten games each, and the omission of the scores of all players who did oot play that number, ex- ceptin the case of a few old professionals whose n:dmai will be recognized. The seazon of base ball ended yesterday, with the game in Boston between the Hartford and Boston Clubs. The final summing up throws the Big Bridge Club back to fourth place, and the Chicagos last but one. The games between first-class clubs were all played, with the excep~ tion of about twenty-four, snd it is plsinly ap- parent that the standingfof the clubs are fairly indicated in tke table. In 1871 the Chicago Club ranked third in field of nine, and last vear fifth 1o a field of eight. This yearit is sixth among seven clubs. We shall see what ** the boys of *76"” will do, when the table is 'made up » year hence. Subjoined is the sum- mary : ONBHTP. To the Editor of I'ha Chicago Iribune: ‘Ux1vERSITY OF CRIcAGO, Oct. 30.—Since your paper of Oct. 29 contained an article relative to the University base-bail nine and their refusal to deliver the silver ball to Evanston College, and since the a:ticle misrepresented us, we agk you to make public the real reason for our re- Tusing to give up the ball. During the first in- ning it waa whispered abont tbat she Evanston catcher, Mr, Partie, was not a member of Evans- ton College. The captain of the Chicago nine, npon hearing this, immediately inquired of the Evanston Captain whether or not Partis was » student of Evanston Collegs, and was informed that he was. Without further inquiry or objec- tion the game was finished with Partie as catcher for Evanston. As further ioformation was re- ceived after the game respecting Partie’s. not beiog & member of the Ipstitution, Mr. Bos- worth, reprezentative of the. Execative Commit- tea of our Association, took occasion to leave a note asking Prof. Fisk whether Partie wasa member of the Northwestern University, inreply to which he received the following note : EvaxsToN, IIL, Oct, 23.—H. Thegame was calied at the close of the eizhth innmg, with the Boatons shead by Tto 4. The home nine wers for the third or fourth time in succession out-batted by the Blues, Bond and Wright leading the scores for their 'respective sides, with two single and oue two-base hit each. In flelding, too, Bond appesred to good sadvantago, making but asinglo error, sud pitching out two men on three strikes. Riills’ play at tirst wus very good, like Ferguson's at third, as was thoe playing of Harbidgo, Remsen, and Carey in their positions. O'Bourke distinzuished himself with several fino catches and throws to home snd firat. Barnes, Spalding, Schifer, and Manning played fanltlessly. George Wright made an error in the second inning, but immediately redeemed himself by tne capture of & hot liner from Carey's bat, besides making several splendid pick-ups and throws to first. Spalding did a tine piece of flelding in the sixth inning. A ball was struck short to him, and he picked it up and whirled a8 to put a man out at first. York was on third, and immediately started for home, but Spelding didn't throw to first. He turned about and caught York between third and home, then thraw to White, who ran York out, thus saving a run. THE S8CORE : BOSTONG.
