THE BEGATTA AT GENEVA LAKE. pecial Disvateh to The Chicaco I'vidime, Gersva Laxe, Wis, Ang. 28.—Yachting bas hecome an established pastime at Geneva Lake. Jt1s followed hera with an ardor and devotion which includes everybody, and which is quite astonishing to those who have reason to Jament the Iack of interestin it in Chicago. The people of this delightful resort have indeed bocn far abead of vour city folk in their devo- tion to this hesltuful, rational, aad exhilarating amnsement. The wealthy and fasbionable sum- m rresidents here have owned their fine yachts 103 covered the waters of their beautifal lake for many s das, and 2o orgavization called ths Geneva Yacht Ciub has been in existence foz a considerabls period. The natives t0a have largely followed suit, and tho lake is at ll times dotted with white eauls flitting over the blas wavesin every direction. Hence, the num- berof yachts that Lake Geneva can moster is pot s few, and it8 regattas are events that have 3:ep and engroesing interest for many inbabit- 215 of the Hitle place,—man, woman, and chuld. The race L0 YEArs apr was exciting, and every vay sucosssful. Thacof last year was equally 89; and further iuteseating from the fact that TBE SEERIDAY PRIZE— s besutifal miniature silver yucht—institnted in favor of Gen. Sheiidan, was then first com- for. It was at that time determined that it should constitn'e a standing prize to be subject to com- petition esch year. TYesterday the sscond apnual regatta for this trophy tuck place, aud 1t was & day of great excitement 10 the pretty littls town, from which not one of its wnhabitants big enough to con- template more than 4 wash-bowl of water AP st s time was free. Long before the sppointed day ammved the event was looked {forward to with the utmost supiety and interest. Speculation was rife; tke most buoyant hopes were indu'ged ; predictiuns the most at variavce were wade withour hesita- tion ; whe owneis of the yachis entered oeclared the mon pleasing conlidence in the success of respecive Doats ; their wives, and chil- d.m ana friends wele with them heart and son and £be people who didu’t own yacuts took sides ane way or the other. 1t was AN EVEXT OF GEEAT SOCIAL MAGNITUDE, scd the topic of conversation in evers house- bod, especially in tuose directls interestea. The lsgies talked about if, the children talked sbont it, the servants chatied smong them- selves sbout it, and took pains w0 over- bear every bit of :achtiog talk that ®me within the raoge of their Ppersevering or- gaos of bearing. Emms made s very fine race just after the sonth course was entered into. She was baodled” well, and, getting most of the wmnd, rapidly passed the Nettie, notwith- stauding that Jim Bradley, of the Fleetwing, sod Mr. Emog. of the Frolic craw, ware sailing tho later. Geueva, handled by Gen. Ducst Limsel?, sailed like a burd, though ehe dipped badly at times, 23 a puff of wind would fill ber salls. She was thus retarded at severat points in the race. The Geneva and Clara bugged cloge to eact: otlier down the west baak, makiag a very fixeny race between them. At the west gtako-boat Emma, who was considerably in the advacce, made a bad sttempt to round it by metting too far to the leeward. Nettie took vaniage of her, and, making the turn withous ioas of time, passed- ber, Geneva second, Clara tlurd, Emwa fourth, aud Lucy Belle filth. No time Was taken ot tho stake-boats. The course thence lay across to tho east shure of the lake, thonce to the judges’ bost, and then a repe:i- tion of the same circoit. 'The craft preseuted & beautiful eight as they headod for the second course, and their positions were not materially changed. He was hence obliged to withdrw at a junction in the contest when it was cvident that he was to be a closo loser, if not a winner. Emma ronnd- ed tho judses' boat 3 minutes after Geneva. Clars, just before the turp, hiad her poak-block away, and was obliged to withdraw. Lucy Belle left the race, sceing no reason to bope for any success. The Neitie sailed the lasr bhalf of the courss, owing to- these unforiunste accidents, withont .op- pomtion, and was declared tbe winner of the prize. Sho immediately hoisted the champion gemmnt‘ was received with hearty cheers, anl thouco eailed to Mr. Rumsey' house, where she received the coogratulations of his wife and children. E—— BASE-BALL. THE OLD, OLD STORY. The usnal result attended the Chicago-Athlet- 10 game yesterdsy, the only variation of impor- tance beiag that the White Stockiogs made some rups, and yet bardly deserved them—certainiy not more than in Friday's game when they made none. The attendance was smaller than on either of the two previous days, aod the indica- tions are that if the home club wins no more games between now and the close of the season, they will plas to empty benches before gnow flies. There is this to be eaid, however, in connection with the Jate games of the Chicagos— that there has not been a word or breath of sus- picion againat the will and effort of every mem- ber of the nine to win every game they have plaved. This is no small thing for the organiza~ tion, and if they can supplement it by winniog wo or three good games—those with Bt. Louis and Cincinnati—they will recover their position as favarites. Withont stopping to discuss the honesty cf Higham, it mny be said that his de- parture has taken away overy cause for sus- picion of bargain and sale. Yesterday's game was Jost by a sort of general cussedness among the usually-reliable members of the nioe, espeoially in the fourth and sixth innings. This was supplemented by a detision of the umpire which was unquestiooably an er- ror, and just as certainly an ivadvertent one. The Athletice lost the toss and went to bat the home club presenting Golden as pitcher, Devhin oo first, and Glenn in left fleld. The re- mainder of the nine were placed as in Friday's game. The visitors went out easily in the firat 1nping, but in the second Sutton got to firat on & clean bit, went around to third on 4 passed-ball, and scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth inning, Figler led off with a bit to Brannock, which wes badly muffed. He then stola eecond, and came home on & nice hit by Craver, which Hines lost_sight of, and on which the stiiker pot to eecond. Sutton struck three times without hittog the ball, and Hastings, baviug dropped it, tried to catch Craver off waons, and both men were safe. Hall followed soquuntances. The crowd was uproarious at the decision, and addressed all sorts of remarks to Ar. McLesn. Nothing more discreditable could bave been dote, for there is 1o pround for supposing that the decision was sything but an error. Aficr Craver had se: s bases were still fal, but McDBride came to therescne with a clean base hit, which brought 1 fntton and Hall, and put_Aacson on third. Thelstter came home while Hastings was try- ing 10 catch McBride on a stesl to second. Thus it wil be seen_that the five runs were made on the same namber of base hits, aided by Hastingw' bad throwing to second, and by the questionsble decisin of the umpiro. In the sixth inning the Athletics had another stresk of luck which yielded® them four ruoe. Eggler led off with a hit to Braunock, which was o badly thrown to Devlin, aliowng the er to reach second.
