Bevolutionizing the System of Heat- ang Furnaces. Indianapolis Sentinel. . Much has been said avd written about the great motor recently brought to light in the East, but {Indianapolis can claim for one of her citizens the honor of inventing and perfecting that which will undoubtedly revoiutionize the system of heating furnaces. Fer more than a year past alr. Henry Stacy has been endeavoring to per fect plans by which coal-tar, crade-oil, ete., could be practically utihzed for the purpose of makiag heat enough to melt iron (of all descriptions), brass, zenerate steam, etc. It has been known by many thatthe Gas Company for some time past have been vory strict iu enforcing the notices that are conspicnously posted up all aroundtheir works, “‘No admittance; call at the office.” Now that tho patent has been granted on the fornace-henter, it has come to light that the Gas Company have bad these heaters on their fur- naces for nearly six months, and so well have they done the work that dunng thie time the Company have saved daily on ten farnaces, 600 bushels of coke, and in mal:ug this eaving have consnmed a portion of cosl-tar that would other- wise kave run into Poguo’srun. One of those heaters was placed on a fornace st ibe Malleabio Tron Worke laut week, where it required eight. days and nights to enneal the iron with ccal, but ube latter did tha work betier in six days and nights, copsuming but two and # half barrels of tar, costing 1.50 per barrel. ir. Stacy thinks he can run a locomotive a distance of 100 mules without a fireman, at a coat of but 5) cents. Arrangements have been made already for the speedy irtroduction of this groat inven- tion, and, a8 the men interested have means and ability, there seems to be no reason why it will | not be adopied by sil those needing furpace- heaters at a saving cf about 90 per cent over woofor coal. Tho cost of the heater is nat to excced $2 for each furnace, and it is 20 simple in its construction that a child can easily under- nd its operation. The tar, oil, etc., passes om the barrel, tank, or reservoir through a small pipe, and is deposited in front of a eteam and cold-air injector that forces it into the fur- pace in the form of spray, making a perfect mass of flame, but ro smoke nor sparus. pbbemiate seas ‘The Sense of Humor in Erutes. A London correspondent writes to Nature: “In the recently published edition of the * De- scent of Man’ there is some additional matter concerning the sence of humor in brutes, aud as the following illustrative cases fell under my own observation, I think it is worth while to publish them as supplementary to those adduced by Mr. Darwin: “Several years ago I used to watch carefully the young orang-outang at the Zoological Gar- den, and [ am quite sure that she manifested sense of the ludicious. One example will euflice. Her fecdivg-tin was of s semewhat peculiar | ebape, and when it was empty sbe used somo j times to invert it upon her bead. The tin thon | presented a comical resemblauce to a bonnet, and, as ite wearer would generally favor the spectators with a broad grin at the time of put- ting it on, eho never failed to raise # laugh from | them. Her success in this respect waa evi- dently attended with no smali gratification on ber part. «fT once haa s Skye terrier, which, like alt of his kind, was very intelligent. When in good humor he bad several tricks, which I know to bave been self-taught, and the sole object of which was evidently to excite laughter. For in- stance, while Iving upon one side end violently grinning, be would hold one leg in his mouth. Under such circumstances, nothing pleased him so much as having bis joke duly appreciaced, while if no nouce was taken of him be would be- come sulky. On the other hand, nothing that could happen displeased him so much as being jaughed at when he did not intend to ba ridicu- lous, Mr. Darwin ssys: ‘Several observers havo | statad that monkeys certainly dislike being laugbed at.’ Therecan be littie or no doubt that : this 18 true of monkeys; bur { uever knew of a | really good caso among doge save thie one, and here the sigos of dislike were unequivocal, To give one instance; He used to be very fond of catchiog flies upon the window-panes, and, if ridiculed when uusuceessftl, was evi- dently much annoyed. On one cceasion, in order to seo wust he would do, I purpose- ly laughed immoderately every time he failed. Itso happened that he did so several times in succession,—partly, I believe, in conse- quence of my langhiog,—aod eventually he bes came £0 distressed that be positively pretended to catch the fly, going throngh ail the appropri- ate actions with his lips and tongue, und after- wards robbing fthe giound with his neck as if to kifl the victim; he then looked up at me with s triumphaut air of saccess. So well was the whole process simoulated, tbat I should have been quite deceived bad I uot seen thatthe fly was still on the window. Accordingly I drow his attention to this fact, 2¢ wellas tothe absence of susthing upon the floor; aud when he saw that his hypocrisy bad been detected, he slunk sway under some furniture, evidently very much aspamed of himseli.” pe a tap Arkansas, Correspondence Kansze City Journal, Daring the wister and spring buadreds of set- tlers along this valley have supported their fami- lies by gathering up buffalo bones and banliug them to the towns. SOMETHING CONCERNING THE WHOLESALE TRADE. There is perhaps no one line of industry, and no single branch or department of the general commerce of a great city, with which the uni- versal public holds so intimate o personal rela- tion, or which maintaina as close an axaocia tion with household thonghts and house- hold memories, and with all doméstic, social, and Private interests of lifo, as tho busivess of the Gruggist. Tho local drag-store is a neighbor- hood centre, everybody’s headquarters, and to all intents and purposes a social and family institu- tion, And while the general pablio are aware that in tho general charactor of management, outfit, and equipment of our leading drug-storea Chicago is regarded a8 far in advance of any of the modern cities of the globe, it will be especial- ly interesting to our older population to present Some appropriate items in the history of tha old Stands of the city, a eee THE SOUTH SIDE. The firm will be remembered bs our older resident population as inaugurating the business which has since developed to such large proportions seventeen years ago in a very handsome store at 93 Clark street, opposite the Court-House, an establishment thatafterward be- came both famous and popular as 4 centro of the prescription business of the city, and a favorite resort and headquarters of a large population for everything in the line of perfomeries and mineral waters, items of meichandie which still form a covspictons feature of the business of the firm, and which, from the attention and skill applied to their manufacture, have always commanded 9/ large transient custom aside from the Iccal avd neighborhood tratfic. In 1570 the firm opened a branch store at tbe southwest corner of State and Madison strects, the return of the, firm to this old atacd five months «fter the general con- flagration of the citv being somewhat memorable as the first prominent relocation: after the fire, in that ancient mercantile district of the city. As wou'd naturally be inferred, this great mer- cantile wterest led ea: lv to wholesale enterprises, and to the astatlisbment of many very Inrgo houses. among them that of H. A. Hurlbut & Co., successo's to Huribut & Edsall, 75 and 77 Randolph, Mx. Hurlbut having saved the uade agaspioneer, The ancisnt firm of J. H. Reed & Co., who bezen business when Chicago was a village, in 1344, and with whom Mr. Hurtbat siterwacd | me aesociated, were among tho first to relitqaich the retail traffic to push the trade into legitimate wholesale channels, By vigorous enterprise sod an adherence 0 close profits by this and otber firms the traffic of the Northwest was saved tothe city. The business of H. A. Hurlbut & Co, has been devaloned to immense proportions, sud their piace a popular base of stpplizs for nearly all sections of the Northwest. i The Season of Seda and Mineral. Wa- ters—OGur Model Drug Stores. ‘The hot weather bringa people to the corner drag store and awakeua the community again to the fact that our city is ornamented with per- haps the most oruate system of drug stores in the worll. The Wabash aveoue store of Thomas ‘Whitfield has been instanced as representing the Practical porsibilities of architecture in the me- chanica. conveniences of the business. This tasteful and beautifal etoro (240 Wabash av- enue, tranch 883 State, corner of Kightcenth street,) was designed by a distinguished archi-~ tect, V. W. Boyington, and is perhaps the moat ccmplete conception in minor architecture to be sta in ourcity. The equipment in min- eral waters, however, thoupn very complete and expensive, is not & great soeciaity. Mr. Whit- field is more ‘those of our leadiog draggists who hav labored to keep upa high etandard of purity ic drugs and medicines, and it 18 provably as the cntral preacriotion store of the city that ) his estailishment will continue to be known. AConfortadle and Luxurious Rome _~Fne Clarendon louse. The mous Clarendoa House, L. A. White prozrietvr, conveniently located on North Clark street, corner of Ontario, two minutes’ walk from the brdge. one of the most comfortable hotel strnctarts of the city, has Iately beon undergoing @ gereral process of renovation for the summer. ‘The catfit, farniture, and accommadationy, table comBrts, parlors, etc., are probably unexcelled in th city, and the generous proprietor, Capt. Whit, is said to ve making arrangements for the acconmodation of boarders at very low rates. It isthe pleneantest and most accesuible public home n the city. Par Excelience- ‘Tae Tamose uvhesitatingly accords great credit io Gatzert’s popular tailoring house (283 South llark street) for the excullent work pro- duced st tbat establishment, aod at prices fully 2% perccnt Jower than elsewhere. A personal examisation of-au $$ pantaloon, or anv other garmat there made to oruzt, will certainly sat- isfy tle most incredulous. rs An Independent Chinese Government in Cahtornia. 2 Sacramento (Cal.) Record, Tip Chinese residents of Sacramento, sod doutless those of other localities throughout the state, have a system of government tar mop powerful, as far as they are concerned, tom) that which State or city can bring to bear upa thom. This.is vested in asecrat Council, whth pasees upon all offenses, sod makes rules forthe regulation of bumness. Any crime com- mited by ono Chinaman against aoother is in- v ‘by thie tribunal, no matter whether the regular courts may have taken cognizance of it or not, and frequently the Coun zoe 80 farasto impose the death penalty, its officers secretly disposing of the party against whom the sentence has been passed, he merely ‘turnin, up missing.” Among other matters reyulsted by the Council is that of the establishment of wash-houses. No Chinaman is allowed to con- duct s wasb-bouse unless he is enrolled on the booke of the Council, and even then he must not locate within boundsries that msy have beon" allotted to§jsome other Jaundryman, Some months ago, a laundry was established beneach the Orleans Hore}, sud a Chinaman from Stock- ton, said to be honest and capabls, took charge of it. It happened that there waa avother laun- on the opposite side of the street, and the celestial running it proceeded against the new comer, who was cited before the Council and fined $40, which he paid. Shorily afterward, officers of the Council arrested him again, and bo was fined $20 cr $30, which he paid. A few days ago, they again muicted him in the sum of $60, the two otticere collecting it by applying pistols to his head, and, as a final measure, the death penalty bas been pronounced againat bim, to be enforced unless he spall immediately leave the city. He is much exercised about it, eayng that he will, some day, mysteriously disappear, snd big bones will uever bo taken back to hia home ta Chiua; but F. W. Fratt, bis landlord, 8 practical individual, not proposing to bave bis tanent ejected in this style, has taken the mat- ter in hand, and will protect him to the full ex- tent of the law, with possibly a margia over. ———— .
