) e —_— TOWN POLITICS. ghe Leaguc Between Core coran and JMcBemnald. Their First Step Toward Ate taining Political Power. Convention of South Side Reprobates. uTike and Trude Run Things 4o Suit Themselves. Frens and Fis Set Bepudiate the Meeting—Thess Ballot- Boxes. Ths West Town Nominations, THE ‘GAMBLERS. THER INTEREST IN TOWN ELECTIONS. Becent developments make it very plain that the gambling element of Chicago, borrowing the pamc of the People’s party on one side of the river snd of the Eepublican party on 'the other, is makiog a strepuous effort to win its first politice! victery, and ip begin its independ- ont career m Chicago, as other rascals fave begun before them, bywzm,, upon the mare incignifiant offices. It is quito natoral that they ehould comwmence by putting their men, ermen whom they can control, into the towh offices, and getting hold of thet machinery and the moacy those pfficers manags beforo striking for bizbur game ahd seckiog to possess them- gelves of maricipal or county affsira. For the purpose of doing this the more effect- ually, : THE TWO MAGNATES of tho gambling busivess, Mike McDonald, of South Chicapo, and Jobn Cor- coran, of North Chicago, per Mike Cor- corzn, . shonlder-hitter, ~Twentieth Ward yote-poller, ato., have entared into a grand co- alition with a view of carrying those two-towns. On tho North Side, what purports to be tho Re- publican ticket is nothing but Corcoran ; on the Bouth Side, what purports to’be the People's ticket is nothing but MoDonald. At the Con- vontion held yesterday, McDonald and his law- yer, Trude, were the rulihg spirits ; one preaid- ed, sod the other made the motions throngh -subordinates. At the North- Bide convention held Tuesdsy, Mike Corcoran was the rmuling spirit of ths Convention, and all the nomlnmons wers Gictated by him. Alzhuugh party names are ueed o2 both sides of the river, there 18 really nothing of a party nature about the movement. Itis gimply two gamblars, whoso interests havo hitberto beea aantagonistic, who bave now GONE INTO PABTSERSHIP for tho purpoee of controlling the nasess- ment of propecty and ‘the collection of taxes m the Towns of North and South Chicago. It is a fortunate thing that there is no gambler of equal notoniety in West Chicago, since otherwise thers would have becn a tnumvirato which would bave attempted $o rule this city as effectually as Ciesar, Pompey, and Crassus ever tried to rule Rome. -Luckily, the West Division is a pretty wide field to cover, and its gaming-houses ars generally of the 10- cent class. THE SOUTE SIDE TICEET is headed by the name of Thomas Foley, now Alderman from the First Ward, and koown for many years in connection with billiards. He has borze the reputation of arespectable citizen, and it is not believed tist he is cognizant of ‘the ul- torior designs of the gang who nominated him, and who intend to give him their votes, He, like any other candidate, ‘would probably be de- lighted to have anybody's vote, hecdless of ‘the motives which caused .the giying of it; but the fact remains that the bave setected him gamblers of Chicago 85 their canaidate for the responsible position of Collector after they had bceu nnable to make a0y torms with the shrewder and more knowing Evans. So there ars respectable men on the North Side town ticket, but nevertbeless, they wiil prove to be the subservient tools of John sod Mike Corcoran. It is noderstood ‘that TIIE ARDANGEMENTS FOR OARRYING THE ELEC- TI0NS are protty wpfl systematized. The “Tweatieth Ward, headed b; l‘y Aike Corcoran, is to cast votes nnough (3,000 if necessary) to-swamp the Gor- l‘zyunmv of’ of the Sixteenth snd Beventsenth ards. be trotted in express wagons all over the South town, sud ic vote at every poll between the Dearborn etreet engine-house and the corner of Halsted strect and Archer avenue. If the judges make sny opposition to receiving lnudnlenb votes, they ars to be put down by main force. It i claimed by these people that the sympathies of the police are with them, fo such anextent, at Jeast, that they will not interfere to help their oypanann. And they are o positive in this as- jon that there really seems to be some ground lar it. ‘What steps will be taken by tho other side to E:c\‘ent this condition of affairs, are as et un- own. Evans is smart, a good wire-worker, sud sponds his money only on the day of elec- . tion, Lut it -is donbtful whether even he can re- sist th deluge ‘which wilt ponr upoa him from ths Nerth Side of the river. § v —— SOUTH TOWN.CONVENTION. A HIGE-TONED GATHEEING. A nondescript Convention, composed . mainly of indifferent or -very -bad people, assembled in the Council Chamber ‘at 2 o'clock yesterdsy -afternoon for the purpose of nominating South Town officers, Tom Foley especially for Collect- that position on the ticket being conceded to kim, while for tho other offices a grand scramble ‘was permittod. Among the delegates were A. 8. Trade, the “ Chancellor ;” Jim Byan, keeper of .. » concert saloon under *‘ The Store ;" Jim Ap- pletem, tha chicken fancier: -Billy Reason, the % tanoy man ;" George Brown, theprize-fighter; a0 -ex-sssistant jailer Jim'MoHale. The fol- qowing were the most prominent of the 250 Jookers-on: ‘Mike McDonald, Phil Farley, Ed Burns, Tom White, and Meeny . Nominationsfor Assessor were then made, half & dozea being put op, but John Mc‘\hlly ‘beat all bis competitors. There wero five nominations for THE SUPERVISORSIIE, nad the first ballot .rosulted in no choise. On tho second, however, George M. -Greenwald re- coived s mejority, and was declared to have been unanimousiy nomi iated. The Cbairman was asked to make 2 zpeech, - but said he would be hecard from during the “campaign. On'motion tho Convention adjourned sine die. i ik 5 THE EVANS PARTY. THEIR CANDLDATES. Ar. Michael Evans is out in a cdrd stating that Then these organized cohorts are tc | in the so-called -political "Cornvention of tho People's party of April'8 his name was proposed as a candidate for the offizs of Collector of Taxes for the South Town of Chucago, evidontly for the purpose of implicating him in the Conyention ; that he is now snd has boen for the past ten days a canaidate ; that his past record is a gnffi- cient guarantee for tho future; that he has dis- charged his public duties honestly and faithfully, and on these grounds he seoks the suffrage or his fellow-citizens at the ceming election. For Assessor, the “Evans candidate, it would now appear, will be Edward Phillips, althouga this -gentleman does not declaro that he will be. Evans appears to desire him. Alr. Phillips does, hnlvevex, declare that he was not a candidate before any Convontion. In reply to interrogatories, ho stated, lato laat evening, that ho depends solely for an election axltha will of the people whom he served before, call his ticket Independent or otherwise. Having served 88 Aesessor before, he claims vo havp performed ‘his'bounden duty to the public. “Little Joo " will run for Town Clerk. 'The present Supervisor, Schank, intends to run, but it is donbtful if Evans takes him under his wing ; the load would bs too heavy. The slate will probably. be made ont in Evans' saloon to-day, & convention being entirely unneceasary, and the ° candidates will enter the Geld Tuesday nmmmg prepared to win the race or ** go broke.” THE CONVENTION. Itis claimed by some that the Convention which nomirsted town, officers yesterday was illegal, in that it was cilled by the Ward Com- mitfees, who have no sathority to call a town eonvention. On the other'hand, it is -urged that -the Convention last year was called by the Ward Committees, and that that was a precedent for the gction this year. Alr. Phil. Conley (an au- thoricy an such matters) having. committed hini- gelf to the former view Friday, seems inclined to reconsider, as is evidenced by the following « pay-your-money-and-take-your-choice ¥ com- o s af thn South Towen of, Chi taa Folers S aragranh appesred In" this morning's and Times, giving my opinion asto the legality of o ard Gomittes. calligg a fown. convention. According to the stary, ex-Ald. Bomers, of ihe Sixth Ward, went to County .Clerk Lisb and demended the ‘ballot-box of .his ward, claiming that e had ‘a right under ibe law to have it in his possession. Gen. Lieb, ‘however, bad strong doabts sbout the “‘right,” .and refused to deliver it to-him.
