Nearly everybody bas ‘some knd of wiropinfonto give, althongh very many prudently dodge the issue, and plead distrust of partisan reporis ‘unenpported by <onclnmve .evidence. The genersl feeling yos- tcerday appearcd £0 be in favor of firmness, but was rather opposed to erbitrary aciion un- cecessarily brought into use. In this sense the sentiments exproesed in the telegrams from Gen. Sheridan to the Becretary of War are more or lese condemned, except in a fow cases. The position of the Federal Government wins more zpprobation, and the suggestion of 2 new elec- tion was very generally approved. Beveral prominent citizens were interviswed yeaterdsy on the subject by TRIBUNE reporters. Among thoee who expressed a viow upon the issue was XE. GEORGE M. XIMBARK, of tko wail-known hardware firm of that name. ** Wkat is your idea relative to the Lonisianz bosiness, Mr. Ximbark ?" said the reporter. Mr. Kimbark—]I think the situation is, to say tho leaet of it, serious. Iam not in favor of barsh measures, especially as the people are not in open insurrection against the General Govern- ment. Yo that case I'd go in for hard inocks. ‘Tue Southeners are very high-strung and hot- bloodsd, and cannot bo judged by tho standard of Xorthernmen. RELIGIOUS. = - THE FOND DU LAC DIOCESAN CONVENTION. Syecial Dispateh to The Chiccoo Trivune. Foxp pu Lic, Wis., Jan. 9,—The report of tho proceedings of the Council yesterday closed with the election of Bishop. The Rev. F. BE. Haff, F. Devlin, and Ds. Parke; with George L. Ficld and Judge Gary, were chosen a committee to inform M¢. Coleman of his election as Bishop, aad to urge his acceptance of the same, A tels- gram was prepared and transmitted to Mr. Cole- man, but we do not learn that an answer has been received. A thought of being’ elected to the Episcopate of (his diceéss probably never entéred hi¢ mind, and being wholly unprepared for such an announcement, he will probably tako timo for reflection and_covsultation with fricuds before returning a definite answer. The usual testimonial, drawn up and signed by all the clergy and evory lay membor of the Coun- cil, was also transmitted to Mr. Coleman by mail this morning, - f Mr. James B Perry, of this city, was choson Treasurer of the diocesan funds by acclamation, 28 waa also Georgo L. Field, of Ripon, to the of- fice of Rogisirar of the diocese. The Bishop's salary was fixed by resolation at £2,500 and resi- dence, wilh the understandiug that tho Bishop ehsll himself choose the city within thé diocess in which he will reaido, avd that thesalary will be increased as tho circumstances of the diocese will permit, or becassity require. The tollowing Standing Commiltec of tho dio- coso was then elsotod by bailot in a voto by or- ders: The Rev. Dr. Parke, of Oshkosh; the Rov. W. Dafter, of FonddaZLac; the Bey. F. R. Haff, of Green Bay; Judgo Gary, of Osh- kosh; Dr. H. Piorce, of Grosn Bay; and Jawes B, Perry, of Fond du Lac. oy The Committce on Canons made a report, which, with & few amendmenis’ dnd alterations, was adopted. B A Committes on Church-Work was chosen, con- sisting of Dr. Parko, of Oshkosh; the Rey, W. E. Wright, of Wanpan; George P. Loe, of Fond du Lac ; and George L. Ficld, of I':pon. ‘The Council then adjourned o 1 o'clock. At the evening session, at tho conclusion of divine_service op Wells agzin called the Council to_order.. The snme Committee on Can- ona was continued until the nsxf moeting of the ‘The noxt meeting of the Qouncil is to be held in June, and it was voied to hold tuat session’in Bt. Paul's Charch in this city.. ~ ° ' After appropriate temarks by the ‘Bishop 2nd others, Finging'of the Doxology and . prayer by tho Bishop, the Council adjomrned ‘to meet in this city in Jupe next. X Sl ‘Thus closed what we doubt not was one of the mest barmonious and pleasint. scasions of an ecclesiastical body ever held in the Sfate, und in which it was in'marked contrast with the Iste ses- sion of the same body of ~Christiaps lreld Inst year in Milwankee, Tho fixing of the name of .the diocess...end ° the . elec- tion of Bishop were two imporiant matters to be_cousidered, and though the former gave rise to much lively discussion, and the Iat- ter to considerable balloting, there was an cntire absence of discord and ill-fecling, and all showed a truly Christisa spirit. . Bishop Wailes presided with a dignity and fatherly kindness that en- deared him io all present. 'The Comncil was composed of gentlemen, of men of the highest stauding in the corymunities whers they resido. The Council wzs not a lerze body, but those who bave the intercsts of the new dioceso at heart ill'remember that no longér thaa ten years ago the diocese, including the whole State of Wis- copsin, rarely came together in lnfge nnmbers.
