Tho planet Veous posscssesa sccrat of tho greatost valuo to the scientife world. Ono | migbt coucludo as much when Lo noticos, after the setting of the sun, what a com naoding posi- tion sho assumes nesr the horizon in the south- west, aud how siguiticantly intalligens appears ber blushing, radiaaz amile. This wondorful se- cret she sy kept ever sinco the momning stars torelher sang their first chorus,—over sinco God spake iato oxistence tbe rolling, fiery worlds that poople immensity. This is longer than so- crets ae usually kept by those who worship at the shrine of Venus! 1t was not till the beginning of the cighteenth century, abort 155 vears agd, that Venus was suspected of holding so seliishly in her possos- sion this coveted information. Dr. Halley then discovered the important fact, and proposed that by some artifice she be induced to divulge the secrot. To sav nothing of her usual dispoaition or indisposition to respond when addressed, it is only at special periods that Venus can at all bo approached upon this particular eubject. Since the discovory, two of the periods have passod,— one on the 5th of June, 1751; the other oo the 3d of Juoe, 1769. To tho first questioning, a distinc: 1esponse was refused. ‘To the second, Venus.rcplied, but not plainly. And now, al- most broathiless, we await tho comiag of the next poriod. 'This will be the 8th of December, 1874 Then will be repeated the samo question, with tho greatcst possible empuasis. Then, too, on account of this very importunity, will we fondly oxvee: her to ook down from her celestial abode, and distinct- Iy to speak out hor responso, far above the pro- foandly low and deep-tonad music of the sphores. Foudly, too, will we expect bor uiterance to bo recognized, and ccbood, and reverbacated, to every planet and every star throughout the uni- vetse. LEven now, as she twinkles mn the twi- light, sbe seems half incl ned to bresk the still- ness of the pight by revealing her secret betore the time. ‘The Seccret of Vonus is nothing leas than the parallacsic anglo of the sun ; that is, the anglo contaized by two Lines diawn from the coutro of the sunm, 000 to the ceniro of tne earth, tho other s tangent to the earth. Upon the accuracy with which this angle is measured depend, di- rectly or indirectly, all astronomical distauces,— the distances of the earils and all otaer mewnbers of the solar svstem from tie sup, and the dis- tances of the lixed etars frow tbe eoler syrtem, and the velocity of light. It 18 difienlt. thea, fuliy to appreciate the real value o, this secret whou it 18 vuce 1 the possession of the scieutitic wozld. ‘The motions of Venus and the earih around the sup arc such that ut_ tho successive intervals of 121}¢ vears, § years, 105}¢ yoas, 8 yeurs, 1213¢ years, and 50 on, the plavet, io passing be- tween the earth and the suu, is 50 near to s Lns jouning the ceutres of the earth and the sun, taat it will appesr to traverse the run's face. ‘his is called s Trausit of Venus. Tho first ‘Trausit known to have been obeerved occurred o the 4th of Decemier, 1639; the second on the 5th of Jure, 1761 ; the third aud last o in tie past, on ihe 3d of Jaue, 1 The fiist one in tue fusure will occur on tie 8:h of December, 1874: tbe second, on the 6th of Decemoer, 1852 ; the third on the 7tk of Jupe, 2004. In 'tbe interval of 105} vears, elapsing be- tween tho last Transit andithe next, the earth wili complete 10514 revolutions around the sun, whilst Veuns, in tho fame time, will complete 17134 revolutions around that same cen‘ral body. It18 plain, then, thst, in this interval, Venus will complote precisely sixty-six revolutious more tuau the earch ; £.iac is, at the time of the next Transit, e w11 bo passing the pixtv-sixth time belween the earth and (he sun_since the last Traneit. However, mixty-five of these passages were uot sutficieutiv near the line joining tue centres of tho earth and the sun as Lo appear upou tho sun's face; and, astho interval be- tween thes> passaces is about 584 davs, th= six- ty-five bave already cccuried, and moe-teoths of the time nas elapsed belween tho sixty-fifth passage and the nezd Transit of Venus. Venus, our present beautiiul evening-star, therefore, having passed around berond the sun, and baving sttained ber groasest eastern elonea~ tion, is now sxeeping along towards a pomt be~ twean the carti sod the sua. The time of her setring 18 coming nearer and nearer toat of tha sun, and, ot the time of the Transit, it will e the'same. After the Transit, sbe will set 7nd rise before the suo, and will aga:n be our mermn- ing-star. S nce only that half of a planet ali'nes whiich is towards the sun, the part turued towerd the earth at tho umeo of the Transic wil be thor- ouzhly dark, nad it wi'l sppear to bo a romnd black epot on the face of the sun. The disme- ter of Venus 18 only about 1-120 of thie diame- ter of the sun: bor, as ber distance- from 1he cun is only nbout three-fourths of tie disrance of the earth from the gnn, the plariet will be at s point about one-fourth of the ditauce from the earth to the sun; nnd, hence. the diamerer of the spot, a3 compared with thio diame the sun, will oo about four timos 118 real ler Tio dismcter of the svot will, thercfore, be about one-thirticth of the diameter of tno ann. This app.r n° great black bead will puss over the faco of tue eun- from loft to risht, s.0d tho pho- nomenon will last about four Lours. On the 8th of December, 1874, thr) Transit will begin sbout § o'clock p.m., anc. wul end at about 11:45 o'clock p. m., Clucacro solar time.® Tiwe phenomenon, therefore, will viot be visibie in the United Stales. To those points of the emrth on longitude sbout 120 deg. east of Greenwicly the Transit will begm on the 9th ot about 10 ¢ 'clock a. nd end aboat 2 o'clock p. m., ands the middle of the pienomenon wall oceur at nocn. This meridian passes tLroagh the castern part of Asia ond the ‘western part of Austratia. Near this Lo will bo the moet favorable positions from which to take observations oo the Traosit. As the declivation of the tunatthe time -of the Travsit will be about 221¢ deg. sout, to 5no located on latitado a8 mauy gegrees south, and on the previously- mentioned longitude, the sun, at tho middie of the pbenomenon, »ill be ' precicely in tho zenith, At this instant, the Transit will be visi- ble at all places not exce eding 90 deg. from this point. ‘This point will L.z found in tho western partof Australia ; and ‘:his dietance will oxtend as far Lo the east on tho equator as long. 150 deg. west, and as far to Lhie west on the equator as long. 30 deg. east. North of the equator this distance will not ex iend 50 far to the east and weet, and it will luck 2234 deg. of reachmg to the North Pole. Soruh of the equator it will exteud somewhat fart.l.er to tha cas: and west, aud it will reech 2257 deg. bevond the South Pole, to & poirt abou t threc-fourths of the dis- tance from the Polo to the ssnthern point of South America. Ihe former part of tho phe- nomeuon will be vis.lhle from pan:s etill farthor to tho east ot sunset : and the latter part from poiuts stili farther to tho wost at suntisc. The next Transit of Venus will bo a most in- teresting occurrenci. o impo:tant, too, is it considered that our own Goveromeut has ap- proprated a vers large smouns of meney for tbe complete equit ment of scveral parties of our osn scientilic 1 1en, for the work of taking accurato obgervations from various favornbie positions.
