THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 1874, THE REFLUX TIDE. Foreigners Migrating Back to Their Native Homes, Lack of Employment Here, and Better Times Abroad, the Cause. Statistics from the Transporta- tion Lincs. We cen sceno benefit that is to be derived from any attempt to disguiso the fact that from Iilizois, Michigan, Minnesota, Kansae, Nebraska, Mieeouri, and Towa there is an almost unprece- dented rush bock to the loving armsof the mother country, 2nd the warmth and light of old familiar hoarthstoncs, Every steamer leaving the port of New York is heavily freighted with forcigners who bave found a temporary home on our Western prairics. These may be divided into threo classes : thosc who arein search of pleasre ; those returning to epend the winter months amid once-familiar £cencs ; and those who aro driven back from lack of employment bere, the prosent low scale of Jaborers’ wages, and the high price of the most common necessa- rics of life. The first-named class aro decidedly in tho minority, and will comrrize only sbout 7 per cent of tho entire pumber; the second class comprises about 25 per cent; and tho last- named 70 per cert. It is exceedingly ditScult to artive at an accu- roto estimato of the entire number who have forsaken homes in tho West to brave the perils of the sca and take their chances once more with friends in foreign lands, owing to a de- termined unwillingaess on the part of agents of camship lines having offices in Chicago to give the number of tickets sold to emigrante. Ve have endeavorad to adduce facts only, aud, while tho result of an inveetigation shows 2 general increaseof cmigrant travel going towards the East, amounting to nearly 100 per cent moro then during the year 1873, yet the exhibit is ia no wike alarming, nor is it anything more than was to bave been expected as a natural result of {he ranic, failure of crops msome States. caused by the drought and presshofpers in their ravag- ing march, and hard times. THE REBUILDING OF CHICAGO, oo, brought within the hmits of our city and S:ate an aimost inuumerable host of mechanics and Izborers, drawn_bere by the unprecedented demand for people of that class, who now, find- ing their occunation comparatively gone, grace- fally retire from the field of sction, to seck in foreimn climos * greener ficids and pasturcs Then again TITE COST OF LIVING in the British Irles, Germany, Norwav, Sweden, and Denmark is only about one-third of what itis in the United States, 2nd greater inducements zre beiug offered to workmen of all classes in for- eign countries than ever before. L'his, combined with the recently prevailing low rates of fare froma New York to Fastern ports, and tho dearth of ewploymont for labor, skilled and unskilled, in cities during the winter, gives till another canse for the effact. With a few exceptions, we have learned of no cases of destitntion among the foreign element dexirous of leaving America, and fally 10 per ceot of the number leaving onr shres are peo- ple who have saved from their carnings sums rangine from £3,000 to £7,50, and are returning to «pend the remainder of- their davs among the friends and surroundings of ‘* ye olden time.” The only applieations for CHABITY TICKLTS come from those advanced in years, and unable to earn a tivelihord by manual labor. There are aopended hereto the efatistics gathered frem the different ticket-ogencies for railroad and eteamsbip lines. TAE MICHIGAN CENTRAL ‘bave sold during the vear 207 tickets to foreign countries, 100 of which bave been disposed of within the laet threo months. Bixty-six and two- thirds per cent of these have gone to Liver- pool, and the rest to Canada. A party of fiftcen of tho latter nationality passed through Chicaro Thureday last, baving in tow thirty-three cbil- dren. At thoe office of the INMAX LINE thers was fonod an iucreaso in the sale of out- ward-bound tickets during the year 1874 of 8317 per cent over 1873. During the past four weelks their satos Lave averazed 100 per week. TEach steamer out carries from 00 to 700 pas- sengers, mostly mechanics aud laboring- men, Rome of whom Ay they have been entirely without work sinco the pabic. A majori however, have beon working for railway contractors, and in the Lake Suncrior mining regions. A large Tercantzge of the number given above belong to Chicago. The othershail from Inowa and Minne- eota. Of the different natioralities the Scan- dinzvians namber the most, the English come next, and the Germans follow with the smallest number of all. As for tie Germans, the Inman Lino Lias sold Lwo prepaid tickets to this country 10 one going back. e proportions are reveraed for the Scandinavians, and of the Enrlish the number of those coming and going is equal, Tho avent frequently receives letters inquiring if times ara better, and expressing & desire to return. He thinks about G0 per cent havo ex- pressed an iutention of returning with the com- ing of better day. THE STATE LINE, rince Anz, 1, has sold fifiv-two tickets; five-sevenths of this pumber havo been to Scotchmen. The German element bears the lowest ratio to the whole number, onlv two out of fifty-lvo going to Germanv. The rest aro Scandioaviaus. The agent reports a less number outward bound now then during the last two years, when work was comparativelv ensy to obfain. 'Ninety-five por cent are mechaics and day-laborers, snd G0 per cent Lieve sigoified an intention to return; 333 por cent of the 52 ate from the City of Chicago, the others from Nebrasks, Wisconsin, aad Michi- gan. TIE CUNARD LINE sgency roports the emigration from the West now over their lino ns 100 ver cent in exvoss of last year. A majority of these go to remain, but very fow round-trip tickets being sold. Miners, mechsnics, and farm-laborers compose Lhe masy, and are from the States of Kaunsas, Nebraska, Tllinows, Iowa, and JMinnesota. The num- ber of Gckets kold during the montha of Moy, Juno, and July, 1874, wae in excees of tho asmount eold during the sear. Notmany of this number are from Chi- ©ago, 2nd a majority aro Scandinavians, the resi- due being cqually distributed botween the Ger- mang, Englieh, and Irish. In the opinion of the agent two come over Lis line to one going. TIE ANCHOR LINE reports an emigration for the last threa months 50 per cent in oxcess of the corresponding three montbs in 1875, During the month of August it was 30 per cent less thanin July. Of the eu- tire aumber ouly 5 per cent are German, 89 per cent aro English and Insh. 15 per cent being French, Scandinavians, and Italians. They bave been making their homes m_Vvisconsim, Towa, Hisxouri, Kunsas, Nebraela, Michigan, Indiana, &nd Tllinois ; 663¢ per cent will return & soon a8 rood es will warrant it. Tho better class zomplain of a great want of freo reading-rooms, ||n_d vrapexjnhcea wherein to while awny their eirure. 'he average worldly possessi of the entira outfit Whusn they touch l:bu nl.\:)urZ: of America docs not exceed £150. Their coming has been an experiment. and ** panicky times” bave done & most thorough work in dispolling ihe idea centred in too many of their heads that srecnbacks grew on evers tree, and coin jingled npon evory comer. Most of the emigration fiom the West cousists of people who arrived within the last threo years. Those who arrive bero with means, and invest in legitimate branches of trade, aro tho oncs who *'stick.” The agent also reports a decrease in steamer- traflic of 663 per cent. The rate of passage from New York to Liverpool, until quite recent- Iy, has been as low as $7.50, and ranged from that figute to §15. and this has proven & power- ful maguet, drawing away not less than 50 per cant of thoso who have gone. THE WHISE STAR LISE has shipped via Chicago an aversze of 400 pas- rengers per month for the last seven months. They report an increaze in their sales in each successive month during the year. Of the total number of passengers, 50 per cent were Scandi- naviane, 10 per cent Germans, and 40 per cent English and Irish. Mr. Lagorcreen thinks the emigration from this country will ba larger during the months of October and November this year than during any of the past sic yesrs. Iu other years tho return passeugers have been 15 percent ; this year they will scarcely smount t02. An increase of all kinds of work in Europe, and eepecially railroad-work, is 3 trong induce- ment to them to leave America. Last week ono party of twenty men (coopers) was taken from Rock Island Connty, IIL, to the nortbern part of Sweden. Thirty-threa and one-thurd per cent of the English rcturn; 15 per cent go from thio City of Chicago, G per cent are miners, 5 per cent are farmers, aud the rest laborers and me- chanics. Sixty per cent of thoeo who go from Clicego go for Jack of work, and 40 per cent go to spead the money accumulated here, THE GUION LINZ report the samo increasc. 1lalf of their pas- rougors ate Germans, Lhe rest Lnglsh avd Scandinaviaps. Onply two cases of actual dis- tress have come to their notice. Of the entire number 6637 per cent intend to Teturn. THE NATIONAL #old moro tickets durlng the Inst three months to emigrants than in the last three months pre- vious. Of the eatiro num%er 35 per cent are English, 19 per cent Germans, 50 per cent Scan- dinaviau ; 63 per cent of these came from Mich- igan ; 25 per cent go expecting to reiurn. CONSUL CLATSSENIUS Faya 662¢ per cent of tho emigration from this country during the past two years will return ; thnt the condition of the workingmen in Ger- many bas greatly improved during tho past twelvo months; that eince tho close of the Franco-Prussian war, and the return of the country to a normal and scttled condition. sho presents stronger attraction to her children than ever before: but, notwithstanding 2ll this, bho thinks that, inagmuch as the Germun Reich- stag Lias recently enacted lawa which removo ob- stacles heretofore placed in the rozd of those purposing fo cmigrate, & retwrn of Dbetter times to this country will bring such a tide of emigration to our hores as ehe has never teca. It will seen by tue above statistics, that the number of Germans leaving this country is very Jight in compurison with those of other nation- alitics, As u class, they stay moro together than tbe people of auy other nation, snd. as a conse- quence, bring their home associations with them and feel lees desire to return. However much wo may deplore the necessity which drives these peoplo from this grand West, 8till, far scross the water thero exists in thou- sands of bearts & loving regard for the land that for a brief time gavetlem shelter; and tho exes of many are turned toward our smiling ficlds and nodding groves, only waiting the dawning of a brizhier day to call Ametica ouce more the land of their adoption. e o Bankrupt Sale. Thero will be a large baukrupt sale of fine jewelry, silverwaze, clocks, aud bronzes, at the store formerly occupied by A. B. Van Cott & Co., 124 State street, commencing to-morrow morning, and continuing daily until the entire stock, consisting of about §109,000 worth of fine goods i all dfaposed of. MARINE. The stwr Corona, belonging to Goodrich's Line, left Beaton Harbur about 1he same time, snd. both vesscls were in sight of ¢ash other until they were sbout 15 miles from s citr. This was about 4 ovlock s, m. Tie was_ vers rough, the wind Ulowmng almewi a gale from the west, andit was Lerd work for the vesecls to make any héadway. Of a suddea the Lake Breeze stopped, but the Captain of tho Coroua, thinking it was nothing serious, paseed on without fnquiring 3s 10 what had caused ber to do go. The Corona arrived at about ¢ "clock yesterdzy moruiog, and the Lako Breezo was expected 10 arrive shortiy &fterward. But as the ves- sel did not make her appearance for several hoars af- ferward, the opinion gained ground that something aerious fisd Lappueved to Ler. Capt.
