On the deposition of Gov. IHolden by the Legislature in Docember, 1870, Gor. Caldwell succceded to the Executivo chair. To April, 1872, he was nominated on the first ballot as the Republican caudidate for Govern- or,and was olected by & majority of 2,000. As a criminal lawyer, Gov. Caldwell stood at the head of his profession in tho circdit whero ho practiced, and in all the mutations of pasiica never failed of an election before the people when ho was a candidate. His family reside in Burke County, 2t his home, in the same housg whero Gor, Caldwell was boro. Gov. Caldwall leaves a widow and three wmarried daughters. Jra. Caldwell's maiden namo was Miverva Kape. Shewas raised in Ilillaboro. Tie Gov- ernor was_sent by his father to school to ham in Hillsboro, end he there became acquaint- ed with Miks'Kano.
