Wisconsin Farmers and the Insur. ance Question. special Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune, Micwavkee, Fob. 16.—Tho farmors of Jaok- gon, Jefferson, Trompealenu, and Buffalo Coun- tles aroin astato of oxcilement at the appear- anco among thewn of tho Unitod Btates Marshal, for tho colloction of the unpald stock and pre- mium notes of the baukrupt organization for- morly doivg businoss sy thie Rock Rivor Insur- anco Company; aud it seoms likely, 08 ono ro- ault of this indignation, that tho Grangers of thoso countios will tako advantago of their now- ly-learnt oxperionce in associntion for mutunl support and bonofit to establish fire-insurauco compaiies of their own. From tho roport of a gontloman who has boon ongaged in invostigat- ing tho causoof tho oxcitement, your corre- spondent loarus that tho Compnny roforred to found almost its only support among the farm- ora; and that, whon cortain logislation was had, with tho view of searching out the rotten fnsti- tutions of tho Btate, it went to ploces in bank- ruptoy, Its nssots consisted mainly of = largo lot of farmers’ notes, taken undor a sohome for mutunl josurance, and, when it'was declared bankrupt, its dobts hind to bo paid out of the proceeds of thoso mnofes, over 200 of which were givon by the farmers of tho sbove-named counties. DMany of tho farmors, who had given such notos, had suffored lossos, and been unablo to procuro o settloment, and they’ now found thomaolves threatoned, in addition to tho actual losses sustained, with actions for tho payment of notes for which no benofit had beon” or could be recoivod. When the croditors of the bankrupt concern obtaned judgment on somo of theso notes, tho farmers refused to pay, looking upon tho whole affair as » logalized swindle of tho worst clays, but until Iatoly, boforo the organizntion of Granges bogan to givo thom an idea of tho power of co-opera- tion, nothing moro sorious was dono than moro growling. What action will Do takou to resist tho colloction of tho hotos does not appenr; but it is cortain that n \mlglnnlnx; bas boon mado in tho formation of Farmers' Insurauco Clubs, which 18 expocted to extondto whorover Grangers aro to bo found. Tiro or throo prominent furm- ers, with this end in viow, have nlrendy placed thomaelves in communication with various local insurance organizations establishod in differont purts of this Btate during tho past yoar. In rosponso to their inquirios on this quostion, information was furnished from the Oaklan Farmors' Insurance Company, of Jofforson County, which was first organized in May of lnst yoar, and is now in a prosperous condition, with b capital stock of $70,226, and carrying sovonty~ thrao policios on buildings in tho township. It charges for insurauce a policy and_survey foo of 50 conts, aud assnmes s five yoars' risk for ong- fourt of 1 por conton the property insured. From foos, surveys, &o., & fuud of $211 haa al- rondy boon brought into it wreasury, and tho whole expenso, thus far, has beon covered by tho trifling sum of §b1, leaving £160 to be thrown toward tho liquidation of any small claim for losn that may ariso. Tho plan meots with favor in Oakland, and just ss fast as policies expirein other companies they are roissuod in this, The Jackson County farmors have similar en- couraging roports from & local company in Foud du Lac County. In this casc, a survoy and policy feo of $1.50, and an additionsl som of ono-tenth of 1 per cent on property insured, is obarged. This moans of income bas omnbled thom to moot soveral small losses, supply thom- solyes with stationery, printed matter, cte., for flve years, and loave o balance of $40 in tho Trensury. ‘Tho l{nwnrk TFarmers' Grange of Rock County, it" is thought,” will immediately move in tho mattor, and will bo_followed by othors all through tho Btate. It is oxpeoted that tho sub-Gronges will join as soon as tho plan hos bocome understood, and that & formidablo or- gauization can bo ostablished during noxt sum- mer that will effcotunlly protect farmors' n- terests in the lino of " fire-insuranco, Thoir success in_tho matter of purchasing supplios without the intervention ~of middlomen on- couragen them in the eoxpectation. ‘Tho idea is to start with a :n%ilnl of 60,000, consisting of notes given by tho farmers coustituting the orgnnization, 80 a8 to commence with tho means of creating a fund by which the first hoayy losses can bo paid, Several mootings aro appointed for this and next week, with tho result of which Tug ToIBUNE will be duly informed.
