THE LEADING NEWSPAPER [N THE NORTHWEST. THE PAPER FOR THE FARMER, TIECHANIC, MANUFACTURER, L MERCHANT, BANKER, PROFESSIONAL IMAN, AND THE FIRESIDE. PROSPECTUS FOR 1874, The coming yoar promisos to be the most eventfulin a political sense that wo have socen sinco the cloge of the war, The questions which havo ongrossed and divided the public mind during the past twonty years are ropidly passing away, and wo find growing up in difforont parts of the country a party called by vari- ous names---in California tho Inde- pendent party, in Iowa the Anti- Monopoly party, in Wisconsin the Reform yparty, in Illinois the Farmers’ Movement---having a com- mon purposo and inspiretion, and exhibiting a strength which proves that it answers one of the chief de- mands of the hour, The CHICAGO TRIBUNE will give a large share of its attention to this NEW MAN- IFESTATION OF PUBLIC SENTI- MENT. Itholds: 1st, That the old party organiza- tions are essontially corrupt and fraudulent. Having no longer any principles to carry into offect, they have bocome mere business onter- prises, making o show of opposition to ecach other, but roally sharing in the procecds of profligate and dis- honest legislation. To suppose that any healthful reform can flow from tho pretended efforts of these worn- out end demoralized partnerships is eltogether vain and illusory. 2d. That the tariff system now in vogue is & cunuing device to rob the many for the benellt of the fow, and that its effoct is to cause farm pro- ducts to exchange for about one-half the quantity of foreign or ‘pro- tected” goods they would otherwiso buy. 3d. That railroads cannot exact more than a fair rate of interest on the capital actually invested in them, and that when, in addition to this, thoy claim dividonds on watored stock and {raudulent bonds, the State may rightfully intorfore for the protection of the people ; thatunjust diseriminations botwoon different localities are in violation of law and should be prohibited. 4th, That subsidies or bounties of money, land, or public credit, to railway, stoamship, or other corpo- rations, are flagrant abuses of the powors of government, fraught with the gravost dangers to the people, and tending to promote corruption, extravagance, speculation, and financial disaster. The general character of THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE is too well establishod to noed recapitulation. It is always independent and foar- less in the oxpression of its views. In its news dopartment it is second to no paper in the United States. The Weolly Edition contains a care- fully prepared summary ot the news of the woek, brought down to the hour of going to press. Literary, political, financial, so- cinl, and agricultural topics will constitute, as heretofore, leading features of tho Weekly Edition, and no pains will be spared to increase its attractiveness in these depart- monts. Its market reports are un- suarpassed, embracing oll the infor- mation which farmers roquire for the intelligent transection of busi- noss, both as sollers and buyers. THE WEEKLY TRIBUNE is a largo eight-page sheet, of the same gizo as the Daily Tribuno, consisting of fifty-six columns of olosely- printed matter, and, as a family newspapor and in its general make- up, is unsurpassed by any paper in the land.
