' ) \? | i hS . VOLUME 27. " THE OHICAGO TRIBUNE. CEICAGO WEEKLY TRIBUNT. " THE LEADING NEWSPAPER IN THE NORTHWEST. THE PAPER FOR THE -* FARMER, i )l X IAECHARIC, HANUFACTURER, | MERCHANT, BANKER, PROFESSIONAL MAK, AND THE FIRESIDE. PROSPECTUS FOR 1874 4 . The coming year promises to be the most eventful in a political sense that we have soen since the close of the war, . The gquestions which have engrossed and divided the publio mind during the past twenty yoars ere rapidly passing away, and we find growing up in different parts of the country a party called by vari- ous names---in California the Inde-~ ', pendent party, in Iowa the Anti- Monopoly party, in Wisconsin the Reform party, in Illinois the Farmers’ Movement---having a com- mon purpose and inspiration, and exhibiting a strength which proves that it answors one of the chief de- * + mands of the hour. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE will give o large share of its attontion to this NEW MAN- IFESTATION OF PUBLIC SENTI- MENT. It holds: 1st. That the old party organiza- tions are essentially corrupt and fraudulent. Having no longer any «(Jpinociples to carry into effect, they * hae become, mere business enter- prses, making a show of opposition tooeach other, but really sharing in th proceeds of profligate and dis- bnest legislation. To suppose that wny healthful reform can flow from the pretended éfforts of these worn- out and demorsalized partnerships s altogether vain and illusory. 2d. That the tariff system now in vogue is a cunning device to rob the many for the beneflt of the few, and that its effect is to cause farm pro- ducts to exchange for about one-half the guantity of foreign or ¢pro- ,«ected” goods they would otherwise buy. . 3d. That railroads cannot exact more than a fair rate of interest on the capital actually investedin them, and that when, in addition to this, they claim dividends on watered stock and fraudulent bonds, the State may rightfully interfere for the protection of the people ; thatunjust discriminations between different localities are in violation of law and should be prohibited. 4th, That subsidies or bounties of money, land, or public credit, to railway, steamship, or other corpo- rations, are flagrant abuses of the powors of government, franght with the gravest dangoers to the people, and tending to promote corruption, extravagance, speculation, and < finencial disaster. g The general character of THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE is too well . established to need recapitulation. ” H'is always independent and fear- less in the expression of its views. In its news department it is second to no paper in the United States. . The Weekly Edition contains a care- fully prepared summary of the news of the weck, brought down to the hour of going to press. Literary, political, financial, so- cigl, and agricultural topics will oofisfitute, as hoeretofore, leading features of the Weckly Edition, and no pains will be spared to increase its attractiveness in these depart- ments. Its market reports are un- surpassed, embracing all the infor- mation which farmers require for tho intelligent transaction of busi- J ness, both as sellers and buyers. . THE WEEKLY TRIBUNE is a . large eight-page shoet, of the same g1ze as tho Deily Tribune, consisting = of fifty-six columns of closoly- . printed matter, and, as a family ! pewspaper and in its goneral make- ) up, is unsurpassed by any paper in tkw land, “IEE, TRIBUNE will be furnished 4 during the ensuing year st the fol- * lowing rates, payable in advance: ) WEEKLY TRIBUNE.
