OHIOAGO, Oot. 10, 1873, Two years ago this morning, be- fore the smoke had cleared away from the ruins, the Phe- nix Insurance Company of Brook Iyn, opened its office at 62 South Cannl-st, on the third floor. Xt was, for the morning of that day, the only Fire Insurance Office in the city open and doing business, Xts policy-holders who had been burnt out, had their lost confidence in Insurance Compa~ nies restored by the information that the Phenix could and would payevery cent due on their poli~ c1es as rapidly as the losses could be “proved up.” On the 12th the Phenix paid the first loss that was paid by any Company, arising from the big fire. Xt did not sus- prend taking risksatall. The Phe- nix paid every polic-yholder who held a claim againstit without liti- gation. Since October, 1871, the Phenix had a $500,000 “call” at Boston, which was promptly met. The Phenix, of Brooklyn, has had an agency in Chicago for eighteen years. It has paid a great deal more in losses in this city,in that time, than its receipts from the Agency have amounted to. Its as- sets now amount to over Two Mil- lion Dollars, which, with its well- established agency system throughout the United States, and its annual income of $1,600,000, makes as good security as can be offered in the way of insurance; and those persons who believe in SAFE insurance, rather than| CHEAP insurance, are invi- ted to call on CRITCHELL & FORD, Agents, 127 LaSalle-st. 5% 1261251 LLDEAN S122.1130,132. The Monetary Situation Through- out the West Unchanged. NEW. YORK. Special Dispatch to The Chicago Tridune, New Yonk, Oct. 9.—Rumors of an unfavora- blo character, reflecting upon tho stability of soveral mercantilo housos, wore circulatod at the oponing of businoss in Wall stroet, Notwith- standing that thoy were provod false, thoy had depressing offect upon the market. This de- pression was accelerated by the announcement that spocial banks had OALLED IN TIEIR LOANS, and caused o beavy sacrifico of stocks by the oporation. Among those whose stocks wero sald to have been forcod to sale was Honry N Smith, who wont largely long of Westorn Union with & viow to twisting Jay Gould, who was originally short, and thus revenging lhimself for bis troatment in the Northwestern cornor. Later in tho day, tho FAILURE OF GIDHON, GASANOVA & CO,, bankers, No. 50 Exchango Pluce, who ad becama ombarrassedby reason of the withdrawal of Westorn deposits and advances made to the Jack- sonvillo, Northwostorn & Southeastorn Railway of Tilinois. NEw Yonr, Oct. §.—Grbson, Casnovo & Co., stock brokors, sy their susponsion 1 ono of the rosults of tho receut panic, Tho dopositors drew out their funds, and securities bocame un- available. People indebted to the houso wore unablo to pay, and in some cases failed. Addod to this, a largo amount of capital was locked up in a new railrond. Thoy express the boliof of thorr inability to payin full. New Yong, Oct. 0.—A Washington special eays: “Owing to tho small roceipts from tho rovonue, Trensury officials say that it will bo necesuary to issuo 88,000,000 or $9,000,000 of tho 244,000,000 rosorve, to meet the current ox- penses of the Governmont for the prosent month.” —_— BO! B Special Dispatch to The Chicago Tribtne, BostoN, Oct. 9.—The monetary sitnation does not materially improve in this quarter, and tho embarrassmont is widesproad. Itis believed by some on the stroet that somo of the banks aro not doing &l they can to reliavo the stringenoy, but aro looking too olosoly after their own in- terasts, and thoro is & feoling tunt the spacula- tion in'currency, and the groat strain that those who must have money are subjected to, are un- necessarily prolonged. Roports are repostedly heard on the streots that MANUFACTUBING CONCEBNG aro in distress, and the roduction of working force continues. Tha large pork-packing estab- lishment of Squires & Co,, the largest in this part of the country, which's fortnight ago dis- charged a large gaug, has issuod a card to the eifect that it will bo obliged to givo up its foreign business and hold only its homo trade, boing un- able to got money to buy bogs. This con- com is paying heavy ratos for monoy, 16745 pousible that” it may bo ohiiked to shut down altogethor, for a while, ‘Tho consequence of a continuance of this stata of affairs must ho a hard shiit among tho poorer, or working, classos this wintor. THE DISTRESS NOT GENERAL, It must not bo understood that this condition of alfairs is general. Bome concerns which, during tho panie, reduced their working forces, aro now on their Iofin again, aud ate Liring baok their discharged help. Such is the cawe, for instance, with the Waltham Watch Company, It is thought, howevor, that tho bauks will roturn to the old basis, and abandon the cortifieato bueiness within ten days, whon many lar; cr‘ny-rnllu will bave been pro- vided for; and thero are some who are so san- nine as to prodict that money will bo ensior after g].mt time than it has beon for a long poriod be- fore. BUSPICION OF UNFAIR DEALINGS, Thero are still reports afloat of collusion be- tween some fow bank Directors and brokers, and of division of profits from shares wrung from those wha are offercd certificates at banks whon thoy require currency ; but those cannot yot bo traced to trustwworthy sourcos, g, PHILADELPHIA, Speotal Mispatch to The Chicago Tridune, PuiLapeLPiIA, Oct. 0.—A lighter fooling was percoptible in the money market to-dsy. As & rule, brokors obtained curronoy protty freuly. Call loans, according to the collaterals offored, aried from 10 to 16 per cent, and first-class com- morcial paper from 12 to 18, Gold opencd at 10946, and closed at 109}¢. The receipt of a dis- pateh from Roading, this morning, announc- ing tho BUSPENSION OF DUSNING & BRO., bankers, oroated some littlo excitemont on 'Chionge. The firm have $2,000,000 doposits, Thoy will keop thoir bank open for the adjust- ment of accounts, and convert their assots and soourities mto cash, which will meot all their linbilities. Tho susponsion is belioved {0 bo only temporary. BTRIKE OF MILL OPERATORS, A largo number of fomalo operators of Oamp- boll's will, at Manayank, have struok in cone soruenco of & reduction in wages, with only five days' wookly work, Thoy aro endenvoring to in- duco the fomales in tho other mills to strike, and, from the tono of the work peoplo, I fear that a goneral strike is imminont, Malo and fomale hands in Mollow's spinning_ faotory aro workiug three-quurtora’ timo, Tho Palo Alto, Pa,, rolling mills have BUBPENDED OPERATIONS, throwing 200 mon out of omployment, Tho Port Carbon puddle mill, Morehunt mill, and #piko factory buvo also susponded. Upwards of 800 won aro roported idle. 'T'ho mon at Mouto- tius aud othor colliorics intho vicinage of Mount Carmol will horeaftor bo paid in goid. Businoss men 1 Now Onstlo, Dol., complain bitterly of the searolty of currency. “I'io contraorors engaged in constructing TIE BENKS COUNTY RAILROAD, from Roading north to Atatington, held a meat- ing last night in the formor town, to divousy the finsucisl covdition of ' the | road, Chief-Englnsor J. A, B. Nettloton, Trustoes’ Agent of the NONTHERN PACIFIO BAILROAD, hes published o longthy lotter in our evening papors, purporting to rupl{l to some corro- spondont. The purport of tho lotter {s that the road has o substantinl business basis, and nlso that its securitics have apormanent value, One sentenco of Nettloton's issue is spocially worthy of motice. It is: “It is my emphatio belief that overy dopartment of tho Conipany's sorvica is maunged with clean hands, with rigid econo- my, and with good judgmont. Special Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune, WasmiNozox, D. 0., Oct. 9.—The suit against JAY COOKE & €0, which was commencod some days ago in the Supreme Court of this District, and continued for hearing till to-morrow, on au application to forco the firm into bankruptoy, is likely to be dismissed on tho ground that s compotent court in Ponnsylvania has taken jurisdiction of all of the property of the Cookes, and it would not, thorefors, be compotent for a court here of liko jurisdiction to take cognizance of this ap- plication. It bocomes what 18 known in legal arlance esarace of diligence, n which the ‘ennsylvania Court got jurisdiction, TUEIR ASSETS GREATER THAN THEIR LIADILITIES, There is another question on which the court hero would be likely to docdo against the credi- tor, oven if tho above-montioned obatruction were not in the way, namely: The general as- sots of Jay Cooke & Co. are regarded as of the fair average value of bank assots, and these, ox-~ cluding their claim on the Northern Pacific, amount to a sum greater than the liabilities of the firm. Valuing their Northern Pacific claim at o very low figure, eay 25 por cent, it would ivo about 83,000,000 of assats_ovor 'and above lieir liabilitiea. But Jay Cooke & Co, havo the rontest confidonce that, with the infusion of a fittlo now blood Tto. tho alroady very wealthy and efficient Board of Directors of THE NORTHERN PACIFIC, the bonds of that Company will be worth every dollar invested in them by Jay Cooke & Co. Al- ready arrangements are in progress for the in- jection of naw sinews of strougth. e L ST 0 Secrotary of the Troasury always appesrs to bo plonsed when & reduction 1n tho price of gold is roported, and 8 correspondingly dis- pleased to hear a mlln% off in the quotations of Govornmout bonds i telegraphed. Ho was, therefore, av a loss to know tho cause of the tumble of from 1 to 11 por cent in the market valuo of United States bonds to-day. THE LEGAL-TENDER * RESERVE." There is no approhension at_tho D‘Hmrtmunt that tho draft tipon the $44,000,000 will bo very heavy in tho ordinary course of business, The outstand- ing logal-tonders, now_shown to bo over $356,- 000,000, will bo roduced again to thoso figuros at the enrlicst practicable moment. It may be before the issue of the noxt public-debt state- ment. The Congressional Cnnvass in the Eifth District of Michigan, Special Dispatch to The Chlcago 1 ibune. Gnaxo Rarips, Mich., Oct. 9.—The dispatches sont from Dotroit to the Chicago papers, rop; senting that tho Hon. Willlnm A. Howard in likely to seoure the Repnblican nomiuation for Congroes in this District by acclamation, and tha Dotroit Tribune's editorlals to the enmo effect, ore altogether premature, and do nat reflect the true state of feeling generally among Republi- cans throughout the district. Tho soveral days that have elapsed since Mr. Howard's namo was placed among others promi- nently urgod for nomination Lave brought cone clusive ovidence from many parts of the District that others will bo quito 8 strong a8 be in the Convention, if not_stronger. Mr. Howard is well known to advocate subsidics and land- grants on the part of tho Government, sud hia g‘o!ition a8 Land-Agont for the Northorn Pacific atlrond Company, suggests the course he svould now probably pursue, if in Congross, in bobialf of that interest.
