THE NEW WATER TUNNEL. Bynopsis of Work Done During ihe Month of July. A Shaft Looated Yestorday on Wolls Streot, Between Randolph and Lako, Proposition to Establish a Storm-Signal Station at the New Crib. Tho publio ars watching with intorest all that poncorns the now enterpriso which is to furnish drinking wator for tho southwostorn portion of this groat city, and every now item connectod with it s doubtless rocoived with plensurs. Loss than a weok ago Tue TRIBUNE narrated tho cir- oumstances attending the laying of tho firat cor- ner stono of the now city crib, and in connee- tion therowith gavo & detniled nccount of the accident which occurred in the now shaft which id to moot the necond tunnol, and tho monsures which woro mado neceesary to ropair tho dam- ngo dono. 8ince that timoe an oxport diver has boon employed by the city, at immenso risk, to oxamine tho lonk, and his invostiga- tions having shown the oxact ' naturo of tho injury, it wes: ropaired in a ‘ehort timo. Tho shaft is now freo from wator, lnud tho engincer is rendy to commenco drifting .40 foot southward. . At this point tho junction will bo made. Tho contractors of tho mow tunnol, Messrs. Biteolo, McMahon & Steolo, aro . MAKING GOOD TIME, 03 tho following synopeis of tho work dene dur- ing the month of July will show. The brick shaft at the crib has boon constructed to a dopth of 86 foot, at n cost of $4,600; 853 linon faot of brick bave beon Inid in tho tunnel, makinga total of 8,810 linenl foot up to July 81; 40 cubio yards of granito masonry have boon laid at the \crib, at a cost of §3,240; 200 foot of conorato at %1.400, and 600 yards of tho old crib have boon takon down, at $1,200, making a total at the crib of 85,840. Mr. Dryeon's (tho ougincer) roport shows @56,520 bricks have beon laid in the tunnel, in B0 barrels of coment and the eanmo of eand ; 800 foot_cnch of air and water. llm have boon 1sid, and 720 foot of iron rail, with 5,400 foot of Rumber. Thoro have beon consumed 25 tons of conl and 60 gallons of oil. The number of men on\Y]oyud nltogothor to do this work waa 44, not izcluding two nules. A large amount of FINE-DAMT encaped from a sand deposit at 2,820 foot east of tho shaft, provonting the proseoution of ho work for four successive dnys. I'rom 2,842 0 2,878 feet tho wholo oxcayation was in sand and gravel, very dry, necessitating soctionn of 8 foet only at a iimo, Tho avornge amount pro- wviouly and since was 16 foot at & timo, Work has been prosccuted upon THE FIOST SHAFT on Illinois street, with great vigor, and Mr, Bry- «eon oxpressed himsolf groatly pleased with the contractors, Messrs. Cox Bros. The shaft is now twonty-four foot doop, and is in wet clay at prosont, The workmon average soven foet n dny, including timboring. Tho sbaft ia uudor tho supervision of Mr. McHugh. In about ten flays, if everything goos well, tho shaft will bo comploted, and the tunnel will bo driftedin both directions, northeast and southvest. A roporter nocompsaniod Mr. Bryson and Mr. /Thomns Osborne on thoir travels yesterday umorning, their duty being to locato THE NEXT BHAFL. The line of direction roquired a shaft on Wells stroot, betweon Lake and Randolph stroets, or on Randolph, botweon Wells and Erauklin, _Aftor conidorablo deliboration & Bpot was soleatad on Wolls stroot, botwaen Ran- dolph and Lako atreots, almost at the alley, and ou tho onst side of the stroat, Tho systom of . WEATHER SIGNALS, established by tho Federal Government two yoars ago last November, has thus far proved an almost unqualifiod success, Beginning with an nverago of over 60 por cant of nccuracy in its storm warnings, it hag now roached an’ avorago of fully 80 por cont. ‘That is, four out of ove- ry fivo of the storm warnings are vorified by tho arrival of a storm within five or six hours of the timo of tho warning. It is woll known thnat tho Buroau hns oxtended the list of sta- Rions groatly since the commencomont, tho mumber being now really doublo that repro- ecntod by tho average daily reportas rocoived. /Tho Bureau now proposes to mako an impor- &uut oxtoneion of ity systom of storm-warmngs in tho neighborhood of Chicago, if the co-opor. ation of tho city authorities can be obtained. 9t iy propoacd to oxtend the siguals not only in this city, but also about, two miled from shoro, for tho bouefit of Captains of vessols on tho Isko. In ordor to do this it would bo nocessary £o1ny o cablo from tho shoro to tho crib, by which orders could bo convey to the keoper of that important island fo hoist storm- signals to bo soen from a groat distance, ~‘Thoro in no doubt that it would bo much better in every Avay to lay that cablo insido the now tunnel than to oxpose it to tho dangors incident to o position apon the bed of tho lake, whore it would bo lia- dlo to disturbance from Jmnahlg vosacls, Itis aundorstood that the Board of Public Works will Do waited on to-day for tho purposo of ascortain- ing how much tho{ aro willing to recommend the city should do in tho matter. The Bureau docs not think it its duty to recommend to the Govern- ment tho assumption of tha cost of Iaying tho cablo botween tle shore and tho crib, but would prob- ably bo willing to undortake the oxpenso of tronemitting signals if tho cablo was Inid by others, ‘Thoro can scarcely be any quostion of £ho ndvisnbility of tho undertaking., Tho ad- waatago to our marine would bo almost inealeu- ablo. It is well known that the groatest dangor 0 our lako marine lics in tho effort to make the port of Chicago on a Ieo shoro. In other words, 1t is much safer to go out than to go in. Inasmuch a8 it is ofton compara- tively tranquil a fow milos awsy from shore when the entrance to the harbor is stormy, the Jmarinor wonld rocoive his first intimation of danger at tho orib. Womay add that, if the city should not feol disposed to asgumo tho ox- ense, then it would amply repay tho outlay of & wrgo amount of money on the part of our ma- xino insurance companies and the ownors of lake craft who would bo most bonefited by the con- suwmation of tho schome, — PERSONAL.
