An ndjourned meoting of the creditors of the Great Wostern Insurance Compsny was held yostordsy afterncon in tho club-room of the Bhorman House. Dr. L. H. Bmith presided. Tho object of the mooting, which was fairly at- tendod, was to docide whether it was ndvis- oble to make compromiscs with Mr. Harb L. Btewart and certain othor stockholders ©of the benkrupt corporation. Thore was naturally much talking by the distrustful and suspicious individunls prosont. It way objectod that not all the creditors wore prosont, and thorefore no compromise conld be agreed toj but it was claimed that all had beon.notifled. Tho Company also owns, or holds, mortgages on real estato to the amount of §250,000, and it is thought advisablo to take somo nction in rogard to disposing of that. Mr, Brand said the Assignoe of the Company hed boon working for a yesr snd o half, and Wwas mow about at his wite' ends. Things woro gotting tanglod up, and tho oreditora got no money. Tho ayor holds very tonaclously to his post- tion on the viaduot quostion, He is detormined to throw the burdon of thoir construction upon the railroad companies. Rocoguizing their lin- bility, the companies bavo ondeayorad to sooure & division of tho expenso. But tho Mayor is in. dlsposod to concede anything, and ia supportod In his posltion by tho recont decision in the caso of tho City of Bloomington ve. The Chicago & Alton Railroad Company, in which tho Court unanimously held that a rallroad cnm[:‘my must eithor bulld a bridgo “or furnieh o safo croseing. ‘The Court explicitly ruled that, in the absenco of oxpross provision from tho Lufiluhtufl). a railroad compau; is undor obligation to have any highway that {t crossos in o #afo condition for the uso of the publio, Thiu doolsion, tho Mayor thinks, full aflirms the viows he held iu his controvorsy witl tho railrond companios last wintor on the sub- joot of constructing viaducts and approachos thoroto over unsafo stroct orossings, nud bo- lioven that fu o legal contest the corporations would be worstod.” Thoir logal advisors hold that tho queation as to whother & mandumus could bo ivsued «.llruclln;( the cnmqnn(ou to pro- vide viaduots would wholly dopend upon the fact an to whother or no viaducts at tho points indi- catod would constitulo the ouly safe modo of crossing, ond that, If a crowsing can be ‘made safo, iimlm; constructed on a level with tho ntrost, and bolug gusrdod by s fsgman, thoro i nothing in the dooclsion eited requiring the pro- vision of viaducts.
