His bold innovations upon tho vonerable traditions which cluster about the oratorlos and symphonios, joined to his Wag- norlan proclivitics, havo sroused the wrath of the conservativo Gorman critics, which oven Doer will not wash down. This fooling ia aleo ehared by tho managors of tho fostival, and as the commoncemont indi- caton a financisl, as woll as musical success, overybody {8 bappy and Cinclonati is bound to enjoy horseil, , Tho matincs this nfternoon was almost as largely attonded a8 tho concort Iast _evoning, _notwithstanding that tho rain has poured in torronts all day, Tho programme was in most respects & vory light one, and like most matines programmos in fosti- wals of thia kind, was arranged for the purposo of glving tho nclista and orclestra an oppor- tunity to perform thoir show piocos. Tho ‘moat attractivo foatures were the orchestra’s pl?lng of the allogretto to Boothovon's Eighth Bym- hony ; tho chorus singing of Mozart's ** Avo orum,” which wns given in_ & _mejestio and polid style worthy of tho musio; Whituney's emnging of tho ‘ Rolling in Fanmlngl.ullluwu," thieadagioof which ho gave vory offoctively; and Mrs. Smith's singing of the barcarole from tho “8tar of tho North,” with fluto obligato, in which her brilliant execution scoured an oncora The noisy xi'nunr of the rain on the roof spolled many of the pianissimo offects, but nobwilh- standing this the concert was a very favorable one. v The ovening concort was thoe groatest miccoss thus far, although tho programmo was o vory heavy one for an audienco, snd therofore quite nx‘mlmenlul. Notwitbsetanding the rain, which' etill continned o fall, tho sudience was s very large and onthusiastic one, and nt ono timo in the evening broke into =& porfect furoro of applause. The pro- gramme openod with -the Bach Buito "No, 8, which was given with oxquisito fecling and sentiment, At the commencoment of the sacond part, or tho aria of tho Suito, thora was consid- orablo confusion caused by poople coming in, Mr. Thomas at onco stopped the aris, snd waited until he Liad secured_a porfectly quiot house be- fore ho recommonced, and receivod a round of applauso for his handsome succoss in disciplin- hgr;udloncuu. o gront foaturo of tho evening, and, indeed, the groat, success, was the performanco of the sconns from Gluck's Orpheus,” Miss Cary singing four or five of the principal recitatives snd arias with the choral asccompaniments. The porformance of it lasted about throe-quarters of an_ hour, and was froquently interrupted with hearty npfflnueu. In conduocting it, Mr. Thomas’ usunl quiet and unimpassioned manner wes changed to o norvously-onor- E«flo one, which™ nat only ehowed that o folt o Liad o great work in ‘hand, but also that hie was detormiined that it should succocd, and it did. »Miss Cary's rich and powerful voico was noyer uged to bettor offect, and her mothod of singing both'tho rocitatives and arias showed anuine artistic finish. Her only lack wasin the intonse dramatic forco which this musio noeds. Tho chorus acquitted itsolf magnificontly in its trying. numbers, and swept through 1ho tromendously dramatic passages with irse- sistibla powor sud almost n prostissimo of ra) idity. In ono or two of tho chorusos Mr. ‘Thomns was vory exacting, but his own enorgy inspirod the singers. It was a groat triumph, and old musicians, overlooking 5 few trifl]ng blemishes which were only porcoptible to tho mos critical, declared that the chorus singing was simply marvelous. Tho * Corlolanus Overture,” and tho Schumann Symphony in ¢ wore finely given, although tha Iattor, in_soma of its numbors, Was very heavy, and tho _sudionce grow very restless boforo i closed. Special Dispatch to The Chicago Tridune, DixoN, Ill, May 7.—Many inquiries are made nabout the fato of tho horso that waa loft on tho wrook, ruefully contemplating his distant fricnda and admirora. Workmen wero directod to tear up the planking in the centro of tho bridge suMoiently to allow of his passing through, and ho waa lowered by monns of ropes, apparently quite contented. Aa soon a8 ho touohed water, they let go tho ropos, and he {mmediatoly breasted tho current and swam gallantly to shore, whore he allowed him- gelf to bo quiotly seoured, and walked off, Mrs, Wilcox, » lady from the East, who was roported in danger from her injurlos, is recov- oring. Tlgn forry which has beon froquently referrod to but not described, is situated above the dam about 160 yards. Tho dam is above tho bridge nbout 800 yards. Iron pickets Liave beon driven into tho river bottom, and to these a continnous wire has been attached, which pnsses over s block and throngh an upright fixed in tho forry- boat, The upright holds the forry-boat to tho wire, tho wire ‘runs smoothly over the: block, and tho passongors haul away, and that's how thoy cross the river, quite in tho old fashion, boforo settlemonts had grown into towns and cities. As tho current is swift, and the platforms aro generally loaded heavily, in consequenco of the absonco of any other monns of crossing, without golng a distanco of twolvo miles, tho groatest carc is nocossary in order to ply this forry with safoty. Duriug tho past four days o modorate breoze from tho east ‘han prevailed, adding to the strongth of tho our- rent nnd tho pressuro on tho brondsido of tho platform; and prognostications of anothor and equally painful disaster with that of Sunday, woro genorally mado. The quostion of providing means for crossing tho stream I8 ono that tho rapid growth of tho town will soon callon the Aldermen to solvo, Moro forry platforms, endurablo by the smallest villages, aro almost usoless in largo aud thriving citios, but Dixon will have to resort to thatmode of communication for & luu§ time to come. Tho poople aro too stunned, yof, to think of any immedinto action, but, from thio littlo that ig said, there secoms no reason to boliove that they bavo abandoned tho ides of an iron bridge, in favor of s wooden one, boozuso ono iron Dridgo has failed. Thoy sifll have their piors intact, and if thore is such a thing to be had in ‘Amorica as 1 8afo superstructure of iron to placo upon them, there isno resson to supposo that another *exporiment will not bo made, Such suporstruotires havo beon in oxistence, in Eng- land and thoe Continent, for many years, ara a8 sound to-day ne tho dsy they wore con- structed, and have carried woights that no bridge in Dixon will eover roason- ably Lo expected to carry. On some of thesa points your reporter _interviowed & member of the formor Aldermanic Bridge Com- mittes of tho city. Ho asked tho ¢x-Alderman whether any system of inspection existed by which defects in tho bridge could have beon nscortained, and .whothor tho Council hada pointed any officor for that pm—imnu? Ho said that, owing to a lsmentablo oversight, both theso rocsitions had boen neglécted. ~Nomo of tho ommitteo professed to knbw nnything about bridges. They had reliod on tho judgment of their Suporintendont of Construction, snd sup- posed ho would have bave warned them it any- thing had been necessary to bo dono. Tho reporter asked whethor tho Committes had at any timo satisflod themsclves, by per- gonal obgorvational, that the structure had not suffored by woather or usage ? e roplied that they had poyer done 80, a8 far 86 Lo was awaro. Thoy considered iho structurs in overy way safo and substeutisl, and It never occurred to thom that an accidont could happen. The roportor asked if tho other had at any timo noticed anything ‘ give " on the bridge. Ho said that he had ofton heard the dlmonfllu snap on winter's nights, whilst ho was driving over the bridge. Had ho takon no steps to secertain what the snapping resulted from, and whothor the safoty of thio bridge might bo affected by the diagonais snapping ? 03 1t has so frequently happened. BSome- times' somebody would say that it might b as woll to tinkor up_tho d.ufiunnlu before they all went; but nobody seemod to have any jdon that an inspection was cither & nccessary or a proper thing to undortake, oither of the ‘dingonals or anything elso. Referring to the old broaks discovored on tho cards that caused tho accident, the reporter asked whethor theaccident would have happoned Lad a careful inspection boen made. He could not say othorwiso, If the supports of the bridgo had been examined at any time during or after the paet wintor, thore waano queatiou but that thess broaka could easily have boon detacted. Turning tho conversation to tha length of epan, tho roporter asked why the piers wero con- struotod 8o far apart as to glve a span neceesl- tating tho adoption of n particular sort of bridge adoptoed for long spans. The ex-Aldermen said that the cltizens wore afraid of turning back the wator too much; and nothing wis more requisite than that the plora should " throw back a minimum of wator. This could only be attained by the plors being made os small a8 possiblo, and” placed as far apart as practicable for bridging purposes. @ wee satinfled that these &riofl wero not surpassed any- where in the United Btates, and they throw back #o little wator that no more harm was done than thoy had expooted and calculatod upon.
