C. Dore, J. G. Shortall, Prof. C. G. Wheeler, B. P. Derickson, Perkin Bazs, and other gentlemen were present, Seth B. Howes, Esq., who gave $500 to the Soclety, was elected a lifo member, and Messrs, Wright, Maso, £nd Sheridan, Polico Gommisafoners, C, E. Felton, F. Jacobs, H. B, Miller, J. L. Gerber, A. H. Pickering, Dr. Rauch, Zenss Coleman, J. V. Ledoyne, and 8, B, Cbese were elected members, The followiig gentlemen were eleited Directors for tho ensuing year: L.P. Wright, Carlile Mason, Mark \Bheridsn, E. L. Brown, . T. Atwiter, William H, “Sharp, B. W. Baymond, J. O, Dore, H. C. Goodrich, Perkins Bass, W. B. Truax, M. M. Graves, Peter sSchuttler, B, F. Culver, Samucl Stone, J, H. Fisher, . 8, Bouton, B. P. Derickson, John G. Shortall, John _ B. Sherman, John Jones, Prof, C. G. Wheeler, 8. B, ‘Howes, J. L. Pickard. The following report was Tesd of work done ince the lst of January, 1873: All complaints are mot en- tered upon the complaint-book yet, but, from memo- irands kept by esch officer, and the regular record, we: find 200 complints attended to, 4G “prosscations made, 15 sbandoned horses illed in Xcity, 52 disabled cattle killed at Stock Yerds, 47 sheep klled st the same place, and 19 horsea in the Yards The fines amount to £350, During most of the time, there have been but two officers in the cliy and the one at tho Slock Yards, A 093 deal of the timo af o Agent bas bee taken up Sith the clerical duties of_the Socloty, which seemed *'¢o demand sttention. A large number of horscs have been condemned in the strest-car stables, and & better condition of omnibus horees Was de- manded, snd, whers immediate this direction’ wero not made, at once followed. _An evident and acknowledged improvement. 15 seen In the condition of the horses of most of tho largo stables in the city, 28 & result of this yigorous - poiicy. Smail 'bus lines, which are continually migrat- from one part of the city to another, are more diffi- ~galt to manago undar existing regulations. _The ney ordinance now before the City Council will, when ‘The siatement made in the January report in the Humane Journal, in reference fo_the tabling of cows and Texns cattle, that are fed upon ewill from tho distilleries, 15 referred to a5 & matter demanding ‘serlous conslderation. The filthinees of some of the etables is simply horrible, =nd tho gromnd all sronnd them one mass of liquid flth, The following from the report refe to is ‘all that can be 1aid at prescat, =8 the Board of Health-have these in- ‘etitutions in charge: “As a general propostion, it ‘cannot bo denied that tho continuous confinement’ of Tows in place such as we havo described, for six nonths at a time, is other thin inhuman and cruel, For theso Iong months these antmals stand in » space Jparely the 8izo of their own bodies. And the milk {from’ cows kept in this way is daily sold to our citi- who, If they could see tho stables, the cown, and Iho milkers, would no_dount feel their stomachs hesi~ Iate to recelve the draught coming through so mach flthinees.” All the prominent stables where Texas =attlo are kept were visited, and a large number of sables both largo and small, whero ailch cows sre stabled, Ventilafors were caused o be put in, and their erowded condition remedied s fer as possible, but the buildings in which these animals nre kept admit of but littlo being done toward improvement, Before enother winter passes it should bapnderstood that better stablos, admitting of plenty of air, must be built, Recently & number of horses have been suddenly st~ tacked with s diseaze of the spine, in the region of the Xddneys, and havefallen upon the streets sud died. The street car companies have had s number of casea of thiskind. Bo far, the best horses are attacked, Some die immediately, while others linger along and partially recover, but it is problematic a8 to their uiti~ mate cure, Considerable time hes been devoted to the condition of horses’ feet which have Leen ruined in ‘most instances by the cruel and nonsensical cuttings practised by oar horse-shoers. The lamenessof = majority of horses run upon our strects can be shown toarise” from the useof the knife bythe farrier. Bruises, commonly called *corns,” aro directly at- tributable to the paring of the sole, and cutting away of thefrogof the horee's fect. These provisions of ‘ncture, to protoct the foot of ths horse wien it comes in contact with hard substances, are ruthiessly cut sway, std the fresh, tender paris are easily bruise and oll manner of foot disesses follow. It is hoyec that stop may beput tothis practice, which is con- demned by ell good veterinarians. . Tne report was adopted. > 5 A, Shortall moved theappointment of a committes of thiree, a for the ensuing thres months, to so- licit annual subecriptions st §6 esch. He belleved they could get 720, which would defray the neccssary ex- ‘Denses of the Soclety, Mr, Dore observed that under the general law it 'wias the duty of the County Board to make &n sppro- mnn of money. That being 50, it was perha) ly the thing t0 call on private citizens to mbloflg: 1o secure the enforcement of the State law. He be- lé:ud in ap] tee to Iabor with the unt 3r.
