The Grand Procession Through the Btreets. Banguet and Ball of the Irish Literary Asgoointion. ¢ Observance of the Day Elsewhere Throughout the Country. THE PROCESSION. YESTERDAY WAS THE 1715t OF MARCH, and the anniversary of tho birth of 8t. Patrick, patron saiut of Ircland. Like all other national bolidays, with the excoption, porhaps, of our own Fourth of July, tho day has no particular interest or significanco for any peoplo excopt those among whom it originated. Ench Bt. Patrick’s Day, however, ndds anothor chapter to tho history of Irishmen and their deacondants, In Ircland ond out of it, and tho féstival is colebratod with an onthusiosm that Incrensos with tho yenrs, It s the only day in tho three hundred and sixty-five that they aro affordad an opportunity of making an essontially Irish public display, and showing the reat of tho world that their love of conntry and religion has undergone no ohangoe. That they take advantago of tho chance with remnrkable unanimity cannot bo denied. Tho Irishmon of Chicago have nover occupied a second place nmong thelr brothron in Amorica in colobrating =& national ovent. It hos boon their aim to bo in the front xank on such patriotio ocen- sions,—oqual with, and, if possible, suporior to, Now York. The leading men among thom bnve + worked uncoasingly to make the last domonstra~ tion tho moat successful of any, and it is public opinion_that & moro olaborato, imposing, and woll-ordored display was nover witucssed in this oty on any formor Bt. Patrick’s Day. AT 9 0'CLOCK IN THE MORNING the Right Rov. Bishop Foloy colebrated Pontifl- cal High Mass in 8t. Patrick's Churely, cornox of Desplaines and Adems streots. nul]gimm 8or- yices wero hold in all the Catholio churchos of the city, as » matter of course, but the coromo-~ nies_at Bt, Pntrick’s wero b tar tho grondest. Tho Bishop was assisted by the Rev. Fathors Fo- ey, O'Neill, D. Riordan, Noonan, Lyons, Cartin, Conway, and Campbell.” The cliurch was fillod with mombera of difforont sociotios, in rogalin. During mass the Rov. . W. Riordan, ono of tho most eoloquent and learned Catholic clorgymon in the Northwest, delivered nu ontortalning and instructive sermon on the life and aecrvicos of Bt. Patrick. The congrogation was disporsed with the bonediction of the Bishop. THE RENDEZVOUS, ‘Whilo tho servicon were being condueted within the church, the socisties which wero to form the rocession took thoir placos without, and o vast ng of sight-seors gathorod. Bo denso was tho ocrowd that it wns impossible for toams or pedestrisns to proceed in Loy direction ou dams or Dosplaines stroots, Just as tho procession was about to movo, a number of fire-ongincs, hose- corts, and hook nnd ladder trucks doshed “up to the churoh, in responso to an alarm of fire, which was aftoryard discovered to bo without foundation, and tho most intonse excitemont ‘was croatod amang the people, who wero unablo to got out of the way of the Impetuous firamon. ‘The only wondor Is that sevoral personn wore not gerlously injured. 'Tho procossion was sadly mixed up by this unwelcome addition to tho gon- eral crowd, and considernblo timo elapsed bofore it could bo brought into line ngain. . . ORDER OF PROOESSION, ETO. A GRAND BUCOESH, The Fourth Annual Banquet and Ball of the Irish Literary Bociety occurred Iast evening at the Central Hotel, cornor of Washington and Market atreots. No effort had been spared by the Bocioty to rendor tho affair s charming suc- cess. The Committeo of Arrangoments con- sisted of John Dillon, A. L. Morrison, John Finerty, J. J, Fitzgibbon, and W. C. McOlure, The preatige of previous succoss assisted thom materially in thoir offorts, but % large crowd for the joint amusoment of a banquot and ball ‘becomes rather an unwieldly thing to have on ono's hands, and thore was plenty to do. As the event showed, however, they did thelr duty.
