THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29, 1 3. 7 e R R T ) AN IOWA COLONY. An Interesting Cc-operative Com-~ munity. A Day Anong the Social Philosophers of Amane, and What Manner of People They Are. pecial Correspondence of The Chicago Tribune. g o e, Tows, Jan. 4, 1873, On the banks of the Iowa River, about 70 miles from tho Alississippi, is & con_:mumty which really seems, under its W2 especial con- ditions, to have SOLYVED THE PROBLEM OF COMBINATIO! both in induatrial parsuits and in home-lifo. is Garman in its origin, ? c abond of a semi-religious character, involving a recognition of the Diving inspiration of the It ¢oanders of the society. ‘The community—which has never been a very larga one, though it traces its bistory back for about two bundred years— emigrated from Germany somo thirty or forty years 880, and settled for a time on a former Indisn reservation ncar Buffalo, N. Y. Tinding their tract of 6,000 acres too small, they came West, and purchased land in Towa, which, «ith subsequent additions, amounts to THIBTY THOUSAND ACRZS, principslly rolling preirie, and fine woodland. To pass into the heart of this commuuity from the midst of the Testless, struggling outeide lifo, 1sems like & transition into s different, almost an 01d-World civilization. The neat, clustered villages, relieved eguinst o back-ground of or- “fruited deep,” and low river-blufls breaking the blue line of the horizon, impress ono as thongh tpon them was sct visibly the sig- et of Peace. On either side of tho wido streets stand the plain brick or stone houses, with their lazgo windows filled with plants, and looking over into wide surrounding gardens, where flowers smd vegetables grow in kindly neighborhood, end which streteh away, without visible. line of demarcation, into fair vineyards. SEITHER LIKE WESTERN NOR NEW ENGLAND sillsges are these, notwithstanding their flour- * jog and woollen mills, their machine ‘shops and factorics, and all the evidences of industrial ac- tivity,—bLaving neither the intellectual atmos- phere and suggestiona of calture of the oue, nor the fast-chauging life and froe-and-easy care- lessmesa of the other. This distines individual- ity is made more marked by the uniform charac- ter of their buildings, which betoken the com- mon plan. 5 3 s The same unity of plan is exlitited in all their business. liach department, both agrical- taral and mechanical, has its owh_manager, or foreman, who 18 responsible to the Board of Trostece, by whom he is appointed. These Trustees, or Descons, are thirteen in’ number, and sre electod by the voto of the entire adult commaunity, which now numbers about TRIBTEEN HUNDRED. Their functions are quite various: the holding of the common property, transacting of tho general business, and the constituting a court of Znal sppeal in case of difficulty between tho members, Entering mombers place their entire property in the common stock; if chey leave, they are entitled to the amount invested, but raceive neither interest nor wages. THE OBJECTS of the Amane Hoc.i.etg are, - professedly, refigions nssociation, industrial and domests co-operation, and the special advancement of the useful arts. Notwithstanding the diffi- cnlues of details suggested by purposes so wide- resching, tho condition of their aiTairs shows that tkere as been a good degree of prudence, both intieir plans and administration, to insure 8o marked a snccess. BCT NOT IN A DAY hss bloesomed the rose-garden of thrift and con- tentment. When the banks of the Iowa were reached, some sixteen years ago, there was to Seicoms them bus tho green prairie, through ‘b rolled tho shining river, while over all Jooked down wonderingly, but coldly, the fair antumn-sky. At first, and for several years, they laborad on the foindations of their fature ~industries. They bridged the river, made good roads, plant- sd Liadges of white willow, and commenced o canal to supply their needed water-power. This cansl, 9 miles in length, and nearly parallel with the river, proved a _difficnlt. and costly entor- price; it was comploted, Lowerver, after abont seven years, with the aid of 3 steam dredge and rmuch resolution ; anl then began the PLANTING OF THE MANTFACTURES, of which, previously, they had had none, except afloaring-mill. Now thoy bave other ilouricg- ‘mills, woollen factories, machino eliope, starci, sugar, and vinegar mentfactories,—all of a sub- gtzntial and excellent character, and fitted with highly-tinished machinery, muca of it having valusble improvements, the designs of their own machinisis. They Lave erected FIVE VILLAGES, two of thelater ones being stations for tho Bock Island & Pacific Rauroad. ‘They are; Amane proper, South and Eaat Amane, Home- stead, and '+ The Hive.” Their schoolhouses and capcls aro devoid of ornamentation,—their principal care being bestowed on use_and sub- siaatial cheracter rather than show in any tespect. B q “Lney still pay clcso attention to agriculture, with the breeding of fine stock, Lut areno longer dependent upon it, a8 in tho first days of their settlement, their manufactures now oc- eupsing THE MOST IMPORTANT PLACE. . They mako large qusatities_of woollen goods, ot soperior qualicy, for both Eastern and West- e markets; cotton yarns, of especial strength 14 evenness, for' use. in- knittiug machines ; and, in connection with their manufactura of starch, are endeavoring to make dry sugar. Byrup hes been mado in” Eastern factories from @ eaccharine portion of the corn which was sxtracted by the boiling water used in the manu- facture of starch; buc the production of dry sugar from corn bas not been successfully ac- complished, As & new braunch of industry, it de- serves attention,—for, after considerable experi ment and investigation, they have succoeded in roducing it in small quantities, and now claim taat they shall bo able to makeit o paying manu- facture in connection with starch. Therr vine- gar, from the refuse of the starch and sugar, is made by the quick process of which the filtering is the most important part,—corn-cobs or beech- wood shavings being used for the purrose. In sddition to their manufacturing business, they do g large trade in 2 FLOUB, CORN, AND GRAIN. Their grain-clevators at Homesteed and South Amsne—both etations on the Rock Island & Pa- cific Railroad—being each of capacity for sioring 60,000 to 80,000 bushiels. One wonders whether this materisl progress indicates a corresponding good intellectual and moral life, In regard to the latter, they bave at least avoided one rock on which many similar or- ganizations have been wrecked, by the law of ‘marriage being simply and. FAITHFTLLY OBSERVED. Early marrisges, however, ero strongly discour- sged,—men not being considered of suitable age until they attain {he discretion of 85 years. Plainness in dress is practised with o success which might excico the envy of reformers, and 2 CO-OPERATIVE HOTUSEKEEPLNG in s manper worthy tho attention of Mrs. Stowe. A puficient number of boarding-houses are erected in each village to sccommodate the in- ‘babitants; here the food i nicely, though plainly, propared, and is partaken of at public es, generally set separately for men and women, thongh the rule does mot seem to be rigidly observed. s Co-operstion is carried in every detail. Their Sc-operative stores supply the needed clothing. Their wood is provided in common stock, and dealt out in due proportion to the families,— #ach family having either & house or separate partments assigned to it. - J THE WOMEN ASSIST in the lighter ont-door work; in the cultivation of the gardens, and the dressing aad Leoping of tbe vineyards.. Adyentures Among the Cannibals, From the Osivego Palladium. . Wa yesterdny published from the Albany Even- ing Times the aunouncement of the_death of the ‘celobrated surgeon, Dr. Cooko, Ar. W. B. Dolmage, of this city, who has been an inti- mate friend of the Doctor for many years, i forms us that Dr. George Cooks was 92 years old on tho 8th of March last; that ho first camo to this_country in 1812, as surgeon of a British war-ship; that he went back to Eng- land ot the close of the war with this country, and returned to New York in 182). e then went to South America for a short time, return- ed to Now York, and in 1830 located himself at Albany and established s dispensary, and attain- ¢d famo and wealth. Mr. Dolmage rolntes mauy thrilling incidonts in the early and venturesomo life of Dr: Cooke, one of whichwe givo in the veritable words of the relator: * In 1807, Dr. Cooko, then surgeon of tho British man-of-war Belcher, which was cruising off the Tonga Islands, wont ashore with twelve of the crew to gather horbs for medical pur- posos. _They were all captured by tho m tives, who proved to bo cannibala. Thoy wore im- mediately bound with strips of bark and thrown into a sort of hole or cave in the side of & hill, &nd kept there until next morning. During the night the unfortunate vietims heard the yells of the savages, who were preparing for the horrible foast of the morrow. Inthe mornin thero wero brought out into the light, unboun stripped entirely naked, again firmiy bandaged, and laid upon their “faces on the ground in two rows, abou four feet apart. The male gavages, who had assembled from the sur- rounding islands in large numbers, formed & circle, the inner diamoter of which was alout sixty feet, and the womon and childron were placed inside the circle. The latter beat tom- toms and yelled in fiendish chorus,. while tho ll:mles performed the dovil's dance for fully an our. This done, twonty-six brawny and naked sav- 2ges,—tho whole gathering of demons, old_end young, malo and female, were perfectly nude,— twenty-six powerful savages advanced ; two of them seized each of tho victims by the hair, and dragged them about 2,000 feet, to o sandy beach, upon which the copper-colored sun sent down’ its fierco, quivering, broiling, and unobstructed rays. Hero was gathered wood in thirteen places,—ono for each yictim—and the nvaiea were seating themselves in groups around each pile. Another ring was formed around Dr. Cooke and his companions, and a short dance was performed, which, at some signal from the Chief—a ‘magnificent brate, nearly eight foet tall, and “made np in roportion”—there was a dead silence. The Fangrr-looking sntages eank on their haunches upon the sand, licking their chops like fam- ished wolves. ; Tho Chief then approached the ‘helplees vic- tims and began a critical examination of the physical condition of cach, He lifted their upyer and lower lips, examined their teeth; drove his owerful thumb into their arm-pits ; pressod his and upon their riba; felt of their logs and arms, all the while wearing the expression of & Dloated epicure. During the progress of this oxsmination tho thirteen fires were lighted, and ndded their heat to that of the relentless sun. Tho Chief finally approached Dr. Cooke, turned him upon_his ‘back, wreathed his hand in his hair, and lifted Lim upon his feet. The savage marked with his finger the portion of the carcass he had eclect for himself. As he did _this, the oyes of the savage and his dinmer mot. ‘The doctor inadvertently, and moro by & spasmodic action of the muscles than otherwise, gave o Mnsonic sign. The chief started, and gezed fixedly on the doctor’s face. The doctor repeated the sign. The Chief answered it, sad immediately uttered s ery of amazement, folloved by somo gibberish, which w23 received with @ yell of disappointment from tho whole gathering of demons, who sprang to their feot and rushed upon tho Christians, Tho Chiof swung his tremendous war club, and plas- tered tho bound bodies of the Englishmen with the brains of a scoro of the heathen dovils be- foroyou could articulate™ Jack Robinson. Ho then gavo ® command to tho Eubordinate, who came up and, with s eharp flint, cut the bonda of the white men, and they wero free. The bodies of the savages just killed wero stewed down in six potash kettles, which had been cast nshore from a wrecked vessel in 1304, and the horrible wretches glutted thomselves upon the bodies of their late comrades. Dr. Cooke and his men stayed upon tho island four days, daring which timo they were guarded with great care by the chief—whom the Doctor christened Chal Chug—which ia cannibal for life-preserver. They were' treated with great ‘hospitality, and escorted by a long procession of savages to the beach where their boat lay, when they ook their departure. It seems, 50mo fivo cears before the date of this narrative, an Eng- ish Captain was cast ashore from a wreck—ho Deing the only soul saved. Hs managed to get into the good graces of Chul Chug, and gave Thim the frst bwo degrees of Masonry. During the four days that Dr. Cooke romained on the island, he guve Cisul fivo moro dogrees, in con- sideration of which “the heathen sxvage ”-was overcome with gratitudo. The doctor returnod to the island in 1809. He found thero a large and fourishing Masonic lodge, aud 7o mission~ srics from England, one of whom was roasted 2nd eaten in honor of his return.
