THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1873. A $170,000 FIRE. The Sortbwestern Fertilizing Company’s ~Werks at Alnsworth De- stroyed. A1 the Buildings and Their Contents Reduced to Ashes, Fstimated Loss, $170,000; In- surance Only $18,900. The Lstablishment to 3¢ Imme- diately Rebuilt. J The people who reside at Ainsworth, or South Chicsgo, 88 itis mow called, are happy, Tho intolernble etink fnctory bas been temporarily ejoined yrom emitting ia obnoxious vapors, snd, were not the rosidents of that suburban {own under moral restraint, mich whiskey and champegno would probably be drunk ‘to com- wemorato the event. This manufactory of the - porapound extract of all that is disegreenble and bos been locsted in Ainsworth offensive fo: thout seven years. In 1863, Me: Wahl Brothers, the proprietors, g too much businese to attend to. sold the estab- lishment and fixturgs to s siock corporation ¥nown as the Northwestern Fertilizizz Com- pany. This organization resolved todo business on 8 more extensive scale thaa the Wahl Broth- ars, 20d the purchased buildings being entiro- * sy insdequate for their use, additional stracturos were erectod and more machinery bought. Noar- 17 $200,000 wero exponded in refitting the factory, and making it accord with their ideas. For the Ioat two years, the Canal and Dock Company, and private citizens, who own property in Ainsworth, bave dope overything possible to have tho esistlishment declared a-nuisance by the Courts, but without avail. The Company was indicted, 3 was & Bimilar concern—the Union Rendering Company, which was sleo located within the limits of the villago—and several decisions sadverse to the complainants wore given by the Juiges before whom tho cages were brought for ' sdjudication. The Union Company was, how- ever, declared to bo & nuisance, and they moved theif manufactory to another location farther' up the Calumet River. The indictment against the Nortbwestern Company s still pending, pro- ceedings having been stoppod, it is understood, t0 consider a proposition to sell the land, build~ 4ngs, and machiery. The prico demanded was deemed éxcessive, and, the Company refusing to make any concessions or compromise, the prop~ osition was ot favorably entertained. What the law failed to stop, has, howover, been checked by fire, the establishment, with all its contents, having been totally consumed early on Wednesdsy morning. The buildings, which covered a space of 800 by 400 foet, were located sbout six hundred yards from the track of the Pitaburgh & Fort Wayne Bailroad, and over 700 yards from any other struc- ture than & small boarding-house. Tho build~ Ings were of %ood, and ono story in height, with the exception of the main structure, which ex- tended upward fivo stories, and were divided into departments designated as the * drying room,” * barrelling floor,” * packing floor,’ “mixing flocr,” ete. On the first floor of the main building the oftal to bo motamorphosed into fortilizors was deposited. ‘The establishment was the only large one in the vicinity of the city, and its capacity was as great 28 that of any in the country. As high as 200 10m8 of animal matter have been received in ono day, and last year over 7,000 tons were handled and utilized. In addition to manufactaring pure bone dust, the Company prepared immenso quan- tities of super-phosphate of limo, made soluble by sulphuric acid, and a manure from llood, which wss dred apnd render- e¢d odorless by a pecnliar process. During the present season they had reccived offal from all over the country, and had about 8,000 tons on hand on Tucsday ' night last. All the refuse from tho numerous packing-houses 12 Cnicago was taken chargo of by the Company, thoy baving twenty cars and a_locomative em. P::E\':d exclusively in hauling the offal to their Abaryae 8 o'clock on Wednesdsy morning, » fire was discovered on the thi floor of the main building, and in loss than an bour the premises and contents were reduced to 2ches. When discovered, the fire occupied about a8 much space as the seat of an ordinary chair. One of the employes firast saw the flames, and ran for & bucket-full of water, num- bems of which were available, being kept con- eiantly in all portions of the building for an emorgency of the kind. The man harried towacd the fire, after socuring a bucket, but the flames had “in tho meantime spread €0 . rapidly that he was obliged to flee for eafety. Tho alarm had Leea previously given to the other porsons at work, of whom tieru were {wonty-five, and all mado their exit from the building withoot diffi- calty, Thoro are no facilities for extmgmshins fireg in Ainsworth,—at least none which coul subdue such a conflagration as this; and henco nathing could be done by the people to prevent the destruction of the properiy. tween eighty-fire sod ninety m‘r’:n ywera em- all . of whom Elnyud in the factory, ‘were; of course, thrown ont of situa- 4ons. Continuation of the Examlnatfon of Pollcy Iiolders Who Sold Out nt Ten Centson tho Dollar. The State Insurance Company matter came up before the Register in Bankruptcy yesterdsy. Colonel B. B. Mason testified that he had four policies in the Btate Insarance Qompany, cover- ing abont £14,000. The loss was total. The claims were turned over to Geo. W. MoMullen, who pald s portion of the loss, and agreed that be ehould have ns much as anybody. Me- Mullen paid about 15 or 18 per cent at tno time, ard has since paid as much more, or in all be- tween 80 and 40 per cent. Witness wroto hia name -on tho back of the policies, assigning them in blank. Inreply to Mr, Aver's interrogatory on that point, Colonel Mason stated that he knew at the time that the State Insurauce Compsny was not making settlements, To Mr. Cooper—I don't ‘think Mr. Mcifullen meationed who he was buying tho policies for. . Mr, Cooper—Did yon not heve some idea what he was buying the policies for? Mr. Ayer objected, and the Register decided tho quostion fmpropor. MMr- Cooper (to the witness)~Why did you not think you were soitling with the Company 2 A. 1 bad confidence in Mr. Mc)ullen, and looked to him to pay tho balance. * A. 8. Trudo testified that he had a_policy ot 2400 in_tho State. The policy was destroyed. Ho assigned the claim to a man whose name he did not and does not know. Ho showed witness some figures as to assets and lisbilities, from which = it sppesred that the compan: could pay sbout 14 por cent. Sok the claim for 10 per cont. The man claimed to 'be acting for J. B. 8mith, and said it amounted 10 o gettloment with the bomrnny. He called to see the man afterward, at a place on West Madi- son street, and thon told him that ho lad found out that he had lied to him. Witnees idontifies some handwriting of Van Inwagen's as identical with that of the man to whom he sold the claim. The man fold hir: that Lo was acting for the Company, and the transac- tion was for the benefit of the Company. The witness wos asked by Mr. Cooper to atato the purport of a subsequeut conversation had with Van Inwagen. ; Mr. Ayer objected, and, after an extended ar- gument, the objection was sustained. The case was adjourned until 10 o'ciock this morning. THE .GERMAH PRESS AND MR. SCAMMOR. [Franslated from the Daly Unlon, Deo. 20.] Our highminded, benovolent, azd patriotic fellow-citizen, J. Young Scammon, has at last ventured a reply to one (aud that very trivial) of the numerous charges against his charsoter which stand unrefuted. A mere reportorial squib, alluding to the failure of Winslow, the Scandinaviag banker, and jocosely involving Mr. Scammon as the religions preceptor of tho defanlter, appearedin Tne TRIBUNEat a timé when Governor Bross, to whom it is attributed, wasa thousand miles awsy, he having been absent at the time Winelow's affair was ‘exposed. Mr. Beammon denies any complicity with Winslow, or connaction with him at any time (of which no one had ever seriously suspectod him) and tskes advantage of the -~ occasion to deny all other statements referring to him which haye appeared in TRE TRIBUNE, but be fails to notico specifically the grave charges preferred agatnat him 83 Treasurer of the Mu- tnal_ Security Insurance Company. The fact still exists that he remains in possession of 248,000 rightfutly the property of the creditors of that compzny, and Is striving by every mean subterfuge and legal technicality to rotain this larfie amount of money to which he haa no just m whatever. The effort to divert sttention from & great fraud by denying a trivial charge, is as useloss and contemptiblo as to try to convey the ides that thisis & personal matter between Gover- nor Bross and Mr. Scammon, or between Toe TriroNe and Infer-Ocean. ‘The public care nothing for any prejudices of Mr. Bross or Tne TmBUNE paper, but they are mot to be blinded as to charges :glinst Mr. Scammon, 80 well sustained, which affect the interests of so 1arge a class in the community, let these charges be made by whom they may. If Mr. Scammon can clear himself of the imputations which have been fastened upon him, he may well be indit- ferent to the feclings or statements of those who manage TrE TRIBUNE. If he cannot 80 clear himself (and it does seem that if he could bave done 80 he would), then it is of no possible advantage to say, this is allmalice.” As well might a criminal scek to escape the felon's brand by charging the oflicers of the law with personal hatred. Golsen v, A, Walibsum ; confession of judgment on a note of £150, How the Morial Enemy of the Tarane tula Captures Its Victims. From the San Diego (CaL) World. The architectural ingenuity, or rather genius, of the tarantula is a fact long familiar to natu- ralists, This insect has an exceptional develop- ment of the instinct which instructs all-crea- tures which ars not protected by nature with a warmth-cogendering_bairy hido to properly houso themselves. Tho dotails of the tarantu- Ia’r dwelling, down even to tho matchless mech- aniam of the doors of its edifice, -have escited the wonder of all interested in natural history, The most elaborate inventions in locks and hinges of vaunted human skill are distanced by this venomous insect in the construction of the door wkich secures its privacy. But the road- runuer, between which 24 the tarautuls sdead- Iy enmity existe, iz its master, 23 an incident which we are about to relato will show. “ Prof. Agassiz, during his recent visit hero, erhibited a special desiro to be supplied with as many specimons as sassible of tho road-runner, of the tarantula, and of tho tarantuia-killer. o are not advised ns to whether he was sup- ?'lied with live specimens of the rosd-runner. This i8 a very timorous and incredibly ewift bird. It is sbout the size of a pheasant; its plumage is not unlike that of _the pheasant family. It hss longer logs, and a slonderer peck and body than the pheasant. It trusts for locomotion slmost altogother to ita legs, snd runs with a swiftness that would shamo & rabbit or a hare. It is susceptiblo of domestication, and in time learns to come_at tho call of thoso who bavo petted it. But it is o hopoless thing for & stranger to try to approsch this fowl. : Itis as sagacious os ewift. We wero paiin possession of facts abont the creature by Mr. Jose G. Estudillo, which oxcited our wonder and admiration. As we have said, thero is enmity between tho rond-runner and tarantula. Tho road-runner is a8 noiseless as rapid. It liesin wait for the tarantuls, and the moment it finda its encmy asleep, it sfl roaches noiselesaly with s twig of the prickly cactus. Deftly and stealthily it goes on piling the }chkly Pprison around the dovotod inscct, until at last a ram- part of tho desired height is piled up. It thon seleota s a&ooial]y jag&%d and heavy pleco of cactus, and drops it on tarantuln. The Iast, awakonod by the shock, endesvors o Tiso snd make its exit. It is instantly impaled upon tha thorns, and the triumph of the roaa-runner is complete. Delirium Treraens From One Drunk. From ths Evansville (Ind.) Journal, A young man_connected with ong of {he heavieat grocery houses in the city, waa cogaged during the greater part of Monday in recoiving and marking goods on the levoe, and, becoming thoronghly chilled, was recommended whon he came in to take a drink of spirita. As the house in which he is anfi:fied keeps no liquors open, tho young man %s a nm%ling ube, and, ocking the bung from s barrel of brandy, toak a drink throi the tube or “‘thief.” Ina very few minutes he becamo insensible, and was carried home and & pbysician sent for. Dr. Ma- geniss answered the summons, and found the Foung man recovering from his stupor, but suf- foring from every symptom of delirium tremons, the delirium continuning throaghout the night. Yesterday m""”:fi the patient was ot of dan- ger. The extraordinary effect of the liguor is in part attributed to the fact that the cask had lain unopened in the store -for more than two years, and that in drinking be inbzled the loog psat-up vaper that had accumulaied in the barrel. Death from Drinking XYce-Waters Prom the Indtanapolis Jowrnal Jan. 1. On Sunday he felt the appetite returning, and to throw it off commonced drinking ico- ‘water, not stopping until he had swallowed, it is said, about threo gallons. This was topped off with a quantity of frozen mesat,.and hslf s gal- Jon of buttermilk. He did not fecl \'erjv(well on Monday, and conenlted Dr. W. H. Kendrick, who gave him some medicine, but he continued £0 grow worse until yesterday memisg, when the Doctor called in” Dr. Tice to consalt on the casge, but the efforts of both phjyricians were of noa vail, as he died at 11 o’clock in the forenoon.
